What OS and version are you using? Do you have the SS4000 or SS4000 Plus? If
you are using SCSI what card are you using and what else is on the SCSI
chain?

Hello All,

I have a Polaroid SS4000 which I did just setup on my new system.
Unfortunately, I have quite some problems. First when the driver for the
Polaroid was installed the system crashed with a blue screen. The second
time it did work, or at least seemed to work. Then when I start Polaroid's
software v4.5 or Silverfast 5 the system completely hangs during
initialization of the scanner. Any ideas how to fix that? If it helps
anything here is my system configuration:
Asus A7M266-D, dual Athlon MP1900+, 1GB module Kingston memory, IDE RAID 0,
Radon 8500DV.
Any help is appreciated.

Robert

I ran this question by last week and received one reply that wasn't the
solution.

Some of my recent scans done on an SS4000 are showing an odd spike in the
histograms. I first noticed this when I was doing Levels correction in
Photoshop. I checked the histograms in both Polacolor Insight and VueScan as
I did more scans and noticed the same thing.

Here is an example of what I mean:

http://www.tallgrassimages.com/test/histogram.jpg

These single level pixel spikes seem to be in the blue channel. I can't see
any streaking or lines or other anomalies on the scanned images themselves.
Sometimes there will be a very high pixel count in the spike as reported by
Photoshop. Sometimes the spike is visible but Photoshop doesn't register a
high pixel count at that particular level. These spikes seem to occur most
commonly at level 0 or level 1. They are not the same from slide to slide
and some slide scans don't produce such a spike.

Any ideas?

Don't know - can't tell ya.
One thing I that I *have* noticed is that was a rash of complaints from new
owners re: dust and debris under the scanning glass. This was on brand new
units. Several people kept returning the units and exchanging them - only
to find more dust debris under the glass. One fellow even had the
salesman opening up one box after the next...in an attempt to locate *any*
particular Epson 2450 unit that didn't have the dust/debris under the glass!

Happy scanning.
Joyfully, -david soderman-

Which could possibly be the reason that they are in short supply. Perhaps
Epson has found a manufacturing problem that they are trying to address. If
your heart is really set on this scanner perhaps it is better to wait for
the dust free version.

[filmscanners] RE: SS4000 Plus not to Europe!

2002-04-21 Thread Thomas B. Maugham

My SS4000 (not Plus) does not have any way to manually change the power
requirement but it did come with two power cords, one for the USA and one
for, I believe, use in Europe and England. The contents list in the manual
states power cord (several provided to accommodate variations in power
sources) so the implication is that it automatically adjusts for power
variations.

[filmscanners] RE: Nikon LS-40 vs Polaroid SS4000

2002-03-24 Thread Thomas B. Maugham

Al,

For what it's worth I have an SS4000 (not the plus) which I like very much.
I've scanned a variety of slides and negs with what I consider to be
excellent results. The only comparison I can make is to a Canon FS2740 and,
to me, the difference is significant. I am using VueScan and am also very
pleased with it. My workflow is to scan to a tiff image making no
corrections in VueScan. I usually scan many slides in one sitting, perhaps
as many as 20 or 30 batch scanning 4 at a time. When all have been scanned
I open Photoshop to view them for the first time. With few exceptions what I
see initially in Photoshop is exactly what I see on my light box. I then
color correct, crop, and sharpen as necessary then save and/or print.

I am well pleased with my SS4000 and recommend it highly.

Hope this helps!

Hi folks,

After problems with 2 separate Minolta Elite IIs (which I won't bother
repeating in this post), I'm contemplating jumping ship and going for
either for a Nikon LS-40 or a Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 (some dealers
here in the UK are still advertising it). In my price range, these seem to
be the best 2 scanners. (The Canon FS4000 appears to have poor
shadow performance and I've had enough of this with the Elite II.)

I'm attracted by the extra resolution, low shadow noise, good depth of
field and SCSI interface of the SS4000 (and Polaroids general customer
service) but I have found ICE invaluable at times. Also, the SS4000 is
now quite elderly in scanner terms. Has anyone had direct experience
of both these scanners, preferably on dense slides like Kodachrome?

Thanks,

Al Bond

[filmscanners] RE: SprintScan 4000 Dust on Mirror

2002-02-28 Thread Thomas B. Maugham

My SS4000 came with a dust cover, maybe Polaroid learned something? It also
came with a cleaning brush that attaches to the end of the slide carrier but
I don't really know what it cleans.

Subject: [filmscanners] SprintScan 4000 Dust on Mirror

First the warning: unless you keep a dust cover on your scanner when it
is not in use you will eventually have to take it apart and clean the
reflex mirror. It never occurred to me to use a cover since the optics
are deep in the guts of the beast and, I thought, protected from dust.
The problem is the scanner is open at both ends, air flows right
through. Unless you live in a clean room, that air will carry
micro-fine dust which will settle out. The SS4000 has its lamp over the
film, reflected by a mirror exposed through a small (3/4 x 3/16) opening
in the carrier assembly. Dust falls through this opening and settles on
the mirror.

Symptom is a loss of sensitivity in dense areas of the scan. It took 14
months for mine to become marginal, and my office isn't especially
dusty. Your mileage of course will vary. If your scanner is young, take
it from me, make and use a dust cover and you'll never need to know
what's in there

In every other way I am happy with the SS4000, so I won't second-guess
the design. But given the configuration, they should include a dust
cover to begin with, in my somewhat jaded opinion.

Here's the question: does anybody have a service manual, know where to
get a service manual, or have experience cleaning this contraption? I
fabricated a little tiny brush and got much of the dust off the mirror
(and onto the lens most likely), but to clean it properly looks like it
will require removing the carrier assembly and/or a very special little
tiny vacuum cleaner. Anyone know? (I have no fear when it comes to
taking thing apart except when I see springs. Springs to me are like
snakes to Indiana Jones. The carrier assembly has springs, bunches of
springs, ugh.)

BTW, I have an email discussion underway with Polaroid support, but I am
not optimistic this will lead to a clean mirror anytime soon.

Thanks, cheers,

Jeff Stuart

it provides enough information to give you a good start and you can (and

I have really appreciated using the Vuescan software and it's myriad
upgrades, thanks Ed! However, there are many buttons I don't have the
foggiest as to how they work (So I really don't know what I'm missing). So
here's the list, hopefully it wont be too overwhelming a task to shed some
light on what these options do. Thanks

Minimum Dimension
Max Bitmap
Release Memory
Add Extensions
Auto refresh
Lock image size
Tiff Compression
Save after Scan
Output Log File
Auto Scan
The difference between Long Exposure Pass, and Number of Passes, and how
well either might work on the Polaroid SS4000. And is their new stuff
happening to help with better registration of the images?
Calibrate
Save Raw File
Refresh
Save

While some of these seem obvious, an explanation on their exact way of
functioning would help me to master the software and the art of scanning.

Many thanks in advance!

Will the Sprintscan 4000 plus offer any significant features over and

I am also trying to buy a Sprintscan 4000 here in the UK. The Polaroid rep
here said the Plus had not yet been released officially and whether
it would be was still under discussion as the market was so
competitive. He implied that the final product, if there was going to be
one, didn't have the final specifications set yet. This may just be
comments for the UK, but if it is more general the SS4000 could be sold
out before a final decision is made what will happen with the Plus.
Maybe David Hemingway could offer more information.

Personally I am more interested in a SCSI than a USB connection as it
sounds like it could be quicker but what do others find in this regard?

[filmscanners] RE: Discussion list for Polaroid 4000

2001-12-24 Thread Thomas B. Maugham

I am considering the purchase of a film scanner and the Sprintscan 4000 has
been highly recommended, especially now that Silverfast comes with it. My
question to the group is: What are your experiences (good and bad) with the
4000 and should I be considering something else?

Thanks...

Tom

I'd say the list you posted this comment in might be a good starting
point, as many people own them who are members here.

What is it you need to know, as that might generate some specific
answers for you?

filmscanners: Canon FS2710

2001-09-05 Thread Thomas B. Maugham

I am using a Canon FS2710 invoked from PS 6.0.1 via the twain driver. My
question is: Should I modify the image using levels, curves, etc. at the
time of the scan or simply perform the scan, save the image as a .psd file,
then make any modifications later?

Thanks...
