Re: [Finale] RE: (OT) Another copyright question.
Many of the sets of graphics available in computer stores also include all the Dover graphics, which makes it far less expensive than buying the individual books from Dover, although if all you want is the music graphics, buying the single volume from Dover makes the most sense. Re: [Finale] Another copyright question.
I don't really know. However, I think to use a painting situated in a museum you will need to get permission from the museum. At least that is the situation in Germany. If you want to put something on a CD cover it usually costs about 100 Eur as far as I know. I am not sure what the legal basis is for this. Johannes Paul Copeland wrote: What is the copyright situation with etchings and drawings that are over 80 years old. I am thinking of such pictures as the J.S. Bach ones that appear in so many editions. Is it permissible to scan the cover of a book and make some changes to the image, and then use it in your own publication? If this is not allowable, where can someone get images of early painting, etching etc, of the great composers? ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

[Finale] Finale 2005 not working with Garritan Personal Orchestra
The system: Windows XP Dell P4 1.25 GB RAM Internal soundcard disabled RME Digi96/8 Digital I/O Card with latest drivers connected via Lightpipe to a Yamaha 01V MOTU MIDI Express XT MIDI Interface (Parallel Port) Garritan Personal Orchestra, which uses the NI Kontakt Player and plug-ins - latest version. All of the above work flawlessly for the past year with Finale 2002b.r2 I upgraded to and installed Finale 2005. To integrate GPO with Finale one must launch GPO Studio first. This is done. Finale 2005 is launched. GPO is appropriately chosen as the MIDI output device. As soon as any note entry or playback is attempted, the output channels produce white noise (or call it any color you choose). Finale 2005 is closed but GPO Studio is left open. If Finale 2002 or any other compatible notation software is used within this sequence of events the same white noise problem occurs. Even the virtual keyboard of GPO Studio is affected by this even though it was not before Finale 2005 was launched. GPO Studio is closed and then reopened. The virtual keyboard with GPO Studio works again. Launch Finale 2002 or any other notation application. The GPO Studio works fine with it. What I have established is that Finale 2005 is conflicting with a driver (MIDI Driver?) dealing with the ASIO output. I originally thought it was the installer corrupting the entire system, i.e. any application accessing the GPO Studio, but what I have discovered is that this problem occurs only after Finale 2005 is launched. I have hunted through the program looking for a possible setting but to no avail. I'm still waiting to hear from Finale tech support. Gary Garritan graciously called me at my home after I posted to the GPO forum. But it is not a GPO issue. It is Finale 2005. Any ideas? Re: [Finale] OSX links down
Hello, If trashing the preferences and repairing permissions (running disk utility) doesn't fix the problem, you may also try running a program called Disk Warrior. This program will repair the directory on your computer (technically it actually builds a new directory and replaces the old one that contained the errors.) I have been using this program for several years for both repair and maintenance and have had great success with it. Here is the link: http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/ Best, Karen I cannot find out how (in the terms of OS9) figure out how to rebuild the desktop. After several attempts to re-load MACFIN 2005, the application still cannot find its various text files and soundfonts, though they are exactly where they should be. The older practice was the desktop rebuild which one could force on restart. I have had several security updates come in, and I notice that there is a type of rebuild at its completion. Is there a way to force OSX to re-establish the links that may have been lost? -- Henry Howey, D.M.A. Professor of Music Sam Houston State University Box 2208 Huntsville, TX 77341 (936) 294-1364 http://www.shsu.edu/~music/faculty/howey.html Owner of FINALE Discussion List ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale -- Karen Guthery [EMAIL PROTECTED] ichat: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Re: Open Source Music Font -- a good idea?
I am wondering if members of the Finale community perceive a need for a font that is open source. I certainly would be interested in an Open Source font. With my recent fonts I've been putting the Fontographer files in with them in the hope that people might take them up and improve any shortcomings. Of course the problem with fonts is that everyone's taste tends to be quite individual... people will like different shaped treble clefs, for example. Who would stop contributors just changing the characters they don't like? The other thing is that there are many fonts readily available with the various demo applications going around the place - in spite of the current incompatibilities between the Opus fonts and the Finale OS X application. Not being open source, it's not possible to legally change the Opus font to make it work with Finale without Sibelius' permission, or even to tell others how to make it work, as I was informed via an email from Sibelius. So an open source font would have been nice in this situation. Matthew ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: [Finale] OSX links down
You can also try running fsck. Reboot your mac and hold down the Apple and S keys. That will bring you into a shell, and it should say how to run fsck when you get into the shell. I got the impression that the intended singers of this piece would be familiar with Armenian. If I'm editor of a project which is in a language the singers are likely to be unfamliar with, I like to include a short guide to pronunciation, almost always with the caveat that it's only a guideline and not intended as a substitute for coaching with a native speaker and/or diction expert. If I'm just hired to engrave a piece for someone else, I'm pretty much going to provide whatever he asks for and pays me for. It's hardly the engraver's task to write a pronunciation guide, especially for a language he doesn't already know. With Armenian, I imagine the appendix would be more about the transliteration system. Armenian has its own alphabet, and I'm not sure how standardized is the scheme for transliterating it into the Roman alphabet. Also, I think Armenian has mild differences in pronunciation among dialects, so if you were to get too phonetic with your guidelines, you'd be making an editorial choice with regard to dialects. Also, like most languages preserved in old liturgy, the liturgical language is different from the modern written language. All of this suggests to me that unless you really know what you're doing, or you're consulting with someone else who does, it's probably better to stay out of any pronunciation discussion. mdl ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Solution - WAS RE: [Finale] Finale 2005 not working with Garritan Personal Orchestra
As bizarre as it may appear, and as kludgy as it sounds this workaround fixes my white noise problem with GPO Studio, the RME DIGI96/8 Digital I/O card and Finale 2005. Remember that GPO, the RME DIGI96/8 ASIO driver and Finale 2002 work flawlessly together. Here are the steps: 1. Launch GPO Studio, a required step in any case. 2. From the Settings Audio Driver Menu select anything but the needed [ASIO] ASIO DIGI96 Serie(duplex) e.g. select [ASIO] ASIO Multimedia Driver(duplex) 3. Launch Finale 2005 4. From the Settings Audio Driver Menu in GPO Studio select the necessary [ASIO] ASIO DIGI96 Serie(duplex) 5. Finale 2005 works with the preferred driver at this point. If Finale 2005 is launched with the DIGI96 duplex driver selected in GPO Studio, white noise results. Since this driver is the one I have always used and it works perfectly with Finale 2002b.r2 the compelling evidence points to Finale 2005 having some new buffer allocation or library calls that are creating problems with my particular setup. The DIGI96/8 has no WDM compliant drivers. It has legacy MME and ASIO only. The following drivers are listed in the GPO Studio menu: [MME] Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output(out) [MME] DIGI 96/8 Out (1+2)(1)(out) [MME] DIGI 96/8 Out (3+4)(1)(out) [MME] DIGI 96/8 Out (5+6)(1)(out) [MME] DIGI 96/8 Out (7+8)(1)(out) [ASIO] ASIO DIGI96 Serie(duplex) [ASIO] ASIO Multimedia Driver(duplex) All but the DIGI96 duplex have unacceptable latencies of approximately 2 seconds. Testing a variety of buffer sizes and driver combinations make no difference with regards to latency or the white noise issue. The DIGI96 duplex driver has latencies as low as 5.8 ms, which is why it is the obvious choice. I prefer a more elegant approach to expensive software and hope the Finale engineers will address this issue but at least I have a work around for now.
