[Finale] downloading Finale 2007a question

2006-12-21 Thread Martin Banner
I downloaded the Finale 2007a updater on my Mac Powerbook G4, and I
don't see anything on my hard drive that specifically says 2007a
(whenever I previously updated to a newer version of Finale, the new
file with the year plus the update letter always appeared in my
folder). I don't see anything new file that says Finale 2007a.

Did something go wrong with my download, or is the download invisible
on my computer?

In addition to my previous post (where there is nothing on my hard
drive that says I have 2007a now), there was also nothing in the
download about wanting to download the new fontpak. Did I get a bum

If you install the new update, the Get Info window will show that it

[Finale] Mac Windows Tool Palettes

I've never used Finale Windows, so I was curious if there is indeed a
difference in the number of tools available.

The Finale 2007 Quick Reference Guide shows that the Windows Tool
Palette is missing the Tempo Tool, Graphics Tool, Mirror Tool, Ossia,
Zoom, and Midi Tool. (I may have missed a few others.)

Is this just a mistake in the guide, or are these tools located

Just a word of warning: Nowhere in the FinMac2K7a ReadMe file does it

[Finale] Microtones

2006-12-21 Thread Will Denayer

I am very interested in microtonal music. I have not tried this in
finale, even as a user who works with Finale almost twenty years. If
you are sucessfull in Finale, please tell me.

Hi Kurt,
I am very interested in microtonal music too. For the moment, I do not have a
clue about how to do this in Finale (I am still a newbie), but I will look into
it and I will let you know everything I find out.
On the other hand, tuning an instrument lower or higher cannot be too difficult
(not that I looked into that yet either), perhaps it can be done in studio
view. I will know more soon.

For the rest, I finally managed to open the Manual (after three months!). I
didn't download Adobe 8. I do not know what was wrong with it, or indeed,
whether it will still open tomorrow. I am a musician, I do not know anything
about computers.

Best regards and wishes, Will Denayer

But Note Spacing still doesn't work if the current part has been assigned a

Pity is that the plugin restrictions for parts have not been fixed in the

I have nothing defined; the Manage Parts box is blank. This score has
passed through several hands, so I don't know what version of Finale it
started with, but it came to me as Finale 2007 with a bucketload of
detailed revisions.

2K7 is working okay so far because nothing exceptional is demanded. The few

[Finale] Re: linked parts: copy page layout

2006-12-21 Thread shirling neueweise

hey chuck, more grand news.

1. TGTools: modify: transfer: layout: beat charts and measure widths
2. layout tool: **before** doing layout (*) select apply to PT/SC
in edit system margins dialogue and select the instruments you
want the changes to apply to (! remember to change it back to
this part only once done!!!) and set system layout as you wish

actually there is (almost) no point in using finale's built-in layout
copy function for large-scale layout duplication, because you can
only apply it to one system at a time (uh...), but (here's another
plug for our plugin godz!!!) i just did this with TGTools (same place
as 1., how the *? i missed that beats the hell out of me).

its taking me about 30-40min to do the layout for each instrument, i
have 8-7-6-4-4 strings left; each group plays similar materials, more
or less the same density, and although the measures they pause and
play in sometimes vary a little, i just copied vlnI.1 to the 10 other
violins, check through them and i need around 5-10 minutes for minor
adjustments to the layout per part. i alkso copied to the 1st viola,
will adjust that and copy across the other violas, etc.

the bottom line: i just shaved about 20-30min off the layout of 24
instruments, which means i get to sleep tomorrow night (have to print
on saturday or i'm dead), thanks to TGTools.

(you can do this of course to extracted parts as well, i'm just
pointing out that there is an easy way to copy layout across parts,
and this seems to be your only hesitation in jumping to 2007 / linked
parts.)

3. layout tool: using fit measure options cmd-sh-f set measures per system (*)

there is a checkbox for this as well, but i can't seem to get it working here.

[Finale] F2007 plugins in part view

2006-12-21 Thread shirling neueweise

i know this has been fixed in 2007a, but i am not risking any changes
at the moment; i discovered - with TGTools - that once one plugin
window is up in part view (by opening in score view in the same or a
new document and returning to the part) you can call up other plugins
while still in part view. otherwise some plugins are not usable at
all in parts, like join two staff systems.

anyways, of use to anyone who doesnt grab the updater for whatever reason.

its taking me about 30-40min to do the layout for each instrument,
i have 8-7-6-4-4 strings left; each group plays similar materials,
more or less the same density, and although the measures they pause
and play in sometimes vary a little, i just copied vlnI.1 to the 10
other violins, check through them and i need around 5-10 minutes
for minor adjustments to the layout per part. i alkso copied to
the 1st viola, will adjust that and copy across the other violas, etc.

the bottom line: i just shaved about 20-30min off the layout of 24
instruments, which means i get to sleep tomorrow night (have to
print on saturday or i'm dead), thanks to TGTools.

(you can do this of course to extracted parts as well, i'm just
pointing out that there is an easy way to copy layout across parts,
and this seems to be your only hesitation in jumping to 2007 /
linked parts.)

3. layout tool: using fit measure options cmd-sh-f set measures
per system (*)

there is a checkbox for this as well, but i can't seem to get it
working here.

Re: [Finale] download 2007a

2006-12-21 Thread Stephen Ellis
Took me about 10 minutes on my G5. I think it said when I started it
would take about 2 hours, but as soon as I started downloading, the
time remaining estimates dropped rapidly. I have found this to be a
common occurrence when beginning the download of a large file.

Re: [Finale] Re: linked parts: copy page layout

2006-12-21 Thread Chuck Israels

Jef,

I just tried this and it worked! How could I have missed this for so
long. Only my reluctance to mess around with unfamiliar things kept
me from trying this a couple of days ago, when you first mentioned
it, but I am so grateful, you can't imagine, to Tobias for creating
this, and to you for finding it and pointing it out to me. I'm sure
there are things in Robert's plugins and other parts of TGTools that
will be equally time saving and generally useful, when I overcome my
fear and explore them.

The only thing that did not paste into the selected destination file
were the measure widths I had adjusted by hand. There were only two
of these, so the time saved was substantial, 2 minutes instead of
10-15 minutes. That's an amazing improvement! This makes the linked
parts work for me, in spite of the necessity to reconfigure page
numbers and titles - one set for the score and one for the parts. If
I can figure out some simpler ways to automate that, that will
eliminate what, for me, is the only remaining hitch, and that problem
is outweighed by the advantages even now.

Thank you again, Jef. This is a big help.

I'm curious is there a way to change the pitch of A in the playback

every once in awhile, poke around the plugin menus... i tend to
forget some things as well.

page numbers and titles - one set for the score and one for the
parts. If I can figure out some simpler ways to automate that,

set up the titles like you want them to appear in one part, check the
settings (position relative to margins), delete, go to score view,
assign the text you want using the setting from the parts.

cmd-drag top where you want it on the score.

using fixed point size helps this process a lot. if you don't want
fixed point size, or want dofferent text in score and parts, define
them separately, then:

- cmd-ctl click the text in the score and deselect show, it won't
appear in teh score.
- ctl click, deselect show, then cmd-ctl select show, it won't show
in the score.

check out pp37-5 linked parts in the manual, as darcy mentioned
recently, it takes some effort to get your head around it, and you
will surely make some mistakes at first, but it's really quite good
to work with once you know how it thinks and adjust your work (-ing
habits) accordingly.

you might want to change the colours of the unlinked objects and the
degree of shading, i find the default settings are too bright, i
found it hard to visualize what they might look like if black. mine
are a kind of brown, so when finishing up things and doing onscreen
proofing (colours off) before printing the elements blend together
better.

Is this a joke? That would work with a waveform recording of some
sort, but not with playback from Finale.

What he needs is a way to set the pitch of A. If he's using GPO, I
assume there's a way to do that.

John,

You can do it with two sets of numbers, one for the score and one for
the parts and use the Hide/Show toggle to control them, but it's a
pain, and things look cluttered with both sets showing, even when one
is grayed out. I haven't bothered with this yet. I will continue to
explore these things with Jef's help - and reading the appropriate
pages in the manual.

David's right of course--this would play back your piece at A=440, but at a
tempo slowed by 7%.

May I ask what you want A=415 *for*, and why you don't just transpose the
music to a lower key? Unless that takes some instruments below their range,
that's an awfully easy solution.
