[Finale] Out of Range Notes in Finale 2012b

2012-07-16 Thread Colin Broom

I notice that Finale has started to do the Sibelius thing of changing the
colour of selected notes when it thinks it's out of range. (When did this
happen?)
Does anyone know if there's a way to switch this off?
Thanks,
Colin.

Under the View menu, Out-of-Range Notes, you can select OFF.
This selection does stay when you exit Finale and re-start it.

Or you can change the color of the Out-of-Range Notes under
Preferences/DisplayColors -- change it to be black.

Apparently in an upcoming upgrade they will allow edits to the ranges. I
noticed right away that they expect Maynard Ferguson on trumpet (high A) as
well as the principal bassoon with the NY Phil (high E), but the trombone and
tuba ranges are approximately high school senior level, topping off at Bb.

Yes, the trombone range limit is annoying. I'm finally getting used to the
fact that many of my trombone player friends play Dbs with ease.

But the low Db (written Bb) limit for the bari sax reminds me to correct older
scores written for players who had the extra low A that throws the horn out of
whack for some serious players. The guys I work with now don't have it, and
opening an older score and seeing the out of range note jump out can be helpful.

The range limitation settings are annoying in
Sibelius as well, but at least they're easy to
turn off. In fact any such pronouncements,
whether in a textbook or Sibelius or Finale, are
estimates, and some estimates are definitely more
educated than others!

[Finale] Advice on drum set notation

2012-07-16 Thread Craig Parmerlee
There is a style of drum set notation that has slash notation in the
measures, but the punches are written as regular notes above the
percussion staff. I can't figure out how to make this happen in
Finale. I trued using a second voice for the punches, but if the
measure is set to slash notation, none of the notes will display,
regardless of how many voices are used.

Any suggestions?

[Finale] F2012 gets really slow rendering WAV

2012-07-16 Thread Craig Parmerlee
If I have my instruments set to MIDI, I can render to WAV quickly. But
if my instruments are set to VST, there seems to be a problem where the
software bogs down slower and slower. If my score is only 75 measures,
I can render, but if it is 120 measures, it gets so slow that I think it
will probably never finish. To get a VST rendering, I had to break my
score into two chunks and then stitch the two WAV files together with
Audacity.

Anybody else see this? It is no better in the 2012B release.

I am using Windows 7.

I use slash notation on layer 4, and make sure you check 'view
[everything] in other layers.
Then put UP staff stuff in layer 1, DOWN staff in layer 3, and the
bizarre stuff in layer 3.

Luck!

Re: [Finale] F2012 gets really slow rendering WAV

2012-07-16 Thread Raymond Horton
Craig,

In FinWin2011 and earlier versions, I have had spotty results with the
export to audio function when using VST and Garritan. Sometimes it works
without a hitch, sometimes I get results that sound nothing like what I
hear - and sometimes the results change in the middle of a project. When
the results become unsatisfactory, I simply record straight from playback
to Audacity.

To do this without an output-input cable to your soundcard requires a
soundcard that will duplex, I believe is the term. You can tell if you
have one of those, and if Audacity recognizes it, if when you open
Audacity, one of your record options (in the little window by the pic of
the microphone) you have an option to record what U hear.

Another option is to record to an outboard digital recorder, or to Audacity
on another computer.

Hi Craig,

Create a new staff style, one that uses slashes as the alternate notation, but
has Show Notes In Other Layers checked. (And use layers, not voices, which I
think is what you meant.)

Cheers,

Re: [Finale] Advice on drum set notation

2012-07-16 Thread Craig Parmerlee
That is getting closer to what I need. My other message was in error. I
said I didn't apply a staff style and instead simply clicked on the
measure from within the staff tool and set alternate notation. That has
the undesirable result of setting EVERY measure to slash notation.

I think I get what I need by modifying the definition for slash notation
to show notes in all other layers, which is similar to your suggestion.

Thanks.

Re: [Finale] Advice on drum set notation

2012-07-16 Thread Craig Parmerlee
I think I have mostly figured this out. You don't apply the slash
style. Instead you put the punches into layer 2, then select the staff
tool. Double click the measure and select alternate notation. In the
alternate notation, you select slash notation applied to layer 1, then
under all other layers check the Notes box.

That seems to work, but maybe somebody has a more straightforward approach.
