Re: [Finale] 2014.5

2015-11-17 Thread Chuck Israels
So far, so good.

Simple way to take care of FAN files and Plugins (Mac):

Go to root level Library/ApplicationSupport/MakeMusic/Finale 2014

Duplicate 2 folders and move them temporarily to the desktop - FAN Files and
Plugins.

Then move the duplicates into the App Support for 2014.5

Quit and restart Finale 2014.5 and both Font Annotation and Plugins will be in
the right place and work correctly. Easy.

One issue I have with preferences is that adjusting the manuscript color and
the background color causes an interaction. Adjust one, and it affects the
other. The manuscript color (I try for a nice ivory) is more important, so I
am stuck with the default gray background. Anyone else have a similar
experience or know a workaround. This particular color adjustment seems rather
finicky.

Thanks,

Chuck

[Finale] Measure number regions bug

2015-11-17 Thread Aaron Sherber
Hi all,

Working in FinWin2011. I've got a piece with several measure number
regions, including a few bars that are excluded from numbering -- either
through measure attributes, or because they sit in between defined regions.

I'm finding that when I do something like change a key signature or time
signature, or apply a barline style, it doesn't get applied to the bar I
actually clicked on -- it winds up a few bars later in the piece.

I'm assuming this is a known issue -- is there a workaround? Is it fixed in
later versions? (I have 2012 and 2014 but would rather stay with 2011 for
this until it becomes insufferable.)

Thanks,
Aaron.

Re: [Finale] Measure number regions bug

2015-11-17 Thread Christopher Smith
This bug is related to the “include in measure numbering” measure attribute,
not the measure number regions. This affects many tools, so what I suggest is
to NOT unclick “include in measure numbering” until you are ready to format and
print.

The fix is to change display measure numbers to "actual" instead of "defined"

I usually use beat-attached dotted-slurs for that. You may find my Smart

(They work, but the UI is still the pre-Fin12 UI.) And you may find my Mass

I can't answer the question about log drums, but as far as tubas are
concerned, you have to think of the key of the instrument. Tubas come in BB
flat, CC, E flat and F [those are the most common keys.] The trill you
mention is a lip trill on the BB flat instrument, and on the others it
should be a fingered trill. On E flat it might be awkward as it has to be
played with F sharp in 2nd valve and G sharp using 3rd valve. Good luck!

Tuba trills: f# to g# in the staff would be fingered:
2/3 to 1 on a BBb. A bit awkward.Alternate fingering would be quite out of tune
2 to 2/3 on a CC Tuba. Easy.
2 to 1 on an Eb tuba. Easy. Sorry, but other poster was not correct.
1/2 to 2 on an F tuba. Easy.
I have avoided any options of 5th or 6th valves, as the setups are quite varied.

Any ideas?

Same place as note-attached. You just have to select beat-attached from the
smart shape menu.

Re: [Finale] Superficial comment on Finale 2014.5

2015-11-17 Thread Dean Rosenthal
Hi,

The oddest first thing I found about Finale 2014.5 (before taking it for a
drive) is that after reading the list of fixes and improvements, there is
no indication anywhere on the pop-up menu as to how to download it!

After some confusion, you discover you have to click on "*learn more*" –
not a button that would say "*get it now*" or "*download now*". Although it
does say up top, "do you want to download?" – no telling how you might.

Finale, when you offer a new version, have a download button in the pop up
window or explain that you need to click "learn more" to get the new
version. It's a totally superficial criticism, but a valid one. This is not
a complaint, however, and I wish us all good luck with this one.

Re: [Finale] Superficial comment on Finale 2014.5

2015-11-17 Thread Craig Parmerlee
A lot longer than 30 seconds for me. If you do "check for updates" from
within Finale, then you get useful instructions, but none of that is in
the Readme or in the announcement email.

You won't find this in the downloads section like other patches. The
procedure is to log onto you account at the Finale site. By to "your
software" That will indicate Finale 2014 available for download. Even
though it says it is 2014, it is actually 2014.5.

I don’t understand how things like this get rolled out in 2015. We were
laughing about it when I was still working in tech back in 1992. Disconcerting.
Like a trumpet player who shows up without any valve oil.

I’m happy the update was released. While this version has introduced new bugs,
it did squash some others that directly affected me every time I worked on a
file.

A pretty mediocre performance, though.

Hopefully work will continue and they’ll do better next time.

cheers
