[Finale] Finale 2014 Mac and Java

2013-11-04 Thread Bob Shuster
It's dismaying to say the least when a big selling point of the new software is
"improved Apple Mac OS X support", but I can't even run it without installing
an old version of Java (Java SE 6) that's highly unsecure and unsafe to run!
The current version of Java is Java 7 version 45, so it's been out and
available for some time. Does anyone know a way around this requirement?

Rebuilding the launch services database did the trick! Thanks - that
would not have occurred to me before running through a lot of other
possibilities (mostly blaming Finale itself!)

Hi Bob,

With all your plug-ins missing in both 2008 and 2009, it sounds like

Rebuild it, which you can do from the Terminal or with a downloadable

[Finale] missing plug-ins menu?

2009-03-20 Thread Bob Shuster
I'm running Finale 2009b.r3 on an Intel Mac running Mac OS X 10.5.6
with all updates applied. I used to use plug-ins from time to time
(particularly TG Tools) but haven't needed them in some time. To make
a long story short, I just found a situation where I need a plug-in -
and noticed there is no plug-in menu item! Even after specifying the
location of the plug-ins folder (in the default location I might add)
in preferences and restarting, it still doesn't appear. I still have
Finale 2008 installed for some older files, and in running that I
notice the plug-ins menu is also missing?!?

Anyone have a clue how I might fix this? I searched online and found
nothing. I also deleted my Finale preference file to no avail.

[Finale] re: Finale 2009 Mac Firewire/Intel issue?

2008-07-29 Thread Bob Shuster
Thanks for the advice on workarounds folks, but I really just need it
to be fixed! :) Well, I believe I'm answering my own question
here. I downloaded the demo of Finale 2009, and while AU support is
disabled in the demo, SoftSynth playback is not - and it still plays
back left channel only with MacIntel and Firewire audio interface
(mine happens to be a Presonus FirePod.) What the heck is up with the
folks at Make Music? They introduced this problem with the 2008
version (over a year ago?) and it's still not fixed?

This seriously limits the usefulness of Finale to me - I think I'm
officially tired of waiting for it at this point. Any good Sibelius
lists out there?

Can anyone confirm or deny that this issue has been fixed? (Intel
Macs with Firewire audio interfaces have left channel output only
since 2008.) I'm waiting to upgrade until I find out!

Also, has human playback been improved at all? I can't use it at all
in 2008 (perhaps related to the above issue) as it crashes Finale
about 75% of the time when initializing.

This is a known Finale bug. It existed in 2008, and I had hoped it
would be fixed by 2008a, but alas it was not. I believe this only
affects those of us with Intel Macs and firewire audio interfaces.
It's not just JABB and GPO/Kontakt, it also affects QuickTime playback.

All of this worked fine in the various versions of Finale 2007 btw -
it was the update to 2008 that broke it.

Hello All,

Thursday afternoon my quad G5 died (the Apple Store quoted me around
$2000 for repair). Of course this happened just as I was about to use
FinMac2007c to print parts for that night's rehearsal. I got the score
off the Wednesday night backup, redid the changes I'd made and printed
the parts from my PowerBook. On Friday I replaced the G5 with a quad
Mac

Pro which I was planning to do this summer.

I've spent the last 2 days moving hundreds of gigs of audio over to
the

new machine and updating software to Leopard 10.5.2.

This forced me to move to FinMac2008a before I was ready and which I
had

ordered but hadn't installed. I updated GPO and JABB to Kontakt Player
2.2.4 (much nicer than the old one!) and when I try to play back all
the

instruments play only through the left channel regardless of what the
pan settings are. iTunes plays back in stereo just fine.

I'm probably missing something simple due to fatigue. Any idea what
might be wrong?

[Finale] Re: Finale Digest, Vol 49, Issue 24

2007-08-19 Thread Bob Shuster
Yes, this update has been out for more than a month, and yes, you
needed to be vigilant to have known about it. The big issue for me
(which I believe I mentioned on this list earlier) is that the audio
output - when using Intel-based Macs - is left channel only. This
may only affect those using Finale 2008, but I'm not sure - it may be
based on the KP update.

My response from MakeMusic on July 30: "This is a known issue at
this time. Our developers are aware of this and working on a fix for
this issue. Thank you for reporting this."

Something to consider before applying the update. This makes it
*severely* limiting when using JABB or GPO for quick playback of your
parts. I'm frankly surprised I haven't seen more discussion of this
on the list.

Two items of interest:

1) The Kontakt Player 2 update for Garritan Jazz And Big Band has
been released. (Without much apparent fanfare -- I really wish Gary
would set up some way of notifying his customers when upgrades are
released.)

This upgrade finally makes it possible for Intel Mac owners to run
JABB for the first time -- which also means it's the first version of
JABB that will run acceptably on Mac laptops. It also adds
keyswitched saxophone doubles, so that you can switch from, e.g.,
alto sax to flute, clarinet, or soprano sax without having to load
additional patches and use channel change expressions. Finally, since
both GPO and JABB instruments can be loaded in the same Kontakt
Player instance, it makes it much easier to mix and match instruments
from different sample libraries.

2) There is now a (much-needed) Garritan Wiki .
It includes, among other things, helpful instructions on how to
upgrade to the new JABB:

http://garritan.info/index.php/JABB_KP2_Update_for_Mac_OS_X

Yes, I did mean 2008 - oops! :) I failed to mention to them that I

PreSonus FirePod. So are you saying that if I just used the line
outs on my Mac Pro for Fainle output that I wouldn't have this

You mean 2008.
I have reported it here as soon as 2008 came out, and MM! has

Finale falsely assumes target CA device is a single stream device.
Mac

[Finale] known audio playback bug in Finale 2008

2007-07-30 Thread Bob Shuster

Just an FYI note.

I recently updated to Finale 2008 for my Intel Mac. I sent the
following bug report to MakeMusic:

After updating to Finale 2007 (I described my system) I find I no
longer have right channel audio output in several situations within
Finale. I do have full left and right channel output from anything
external to Finale, including normal QuickTime player playback,
Kontakt 2 or Kontakt Player 2 output, Logic Pro output or anything else.

The problem only occurs when playing back within Finale, in the
following circumstances:

Using "Play Finale Through MIDI" and selecting SmartMusic SoftSynth
Playback
Using "Play Finale Through Audio Units" and selecting any method
(including Kontakt2, KontaktPlayer2, and SmartMusicSoftSynth)

The problem does *not* however occur when using QuickTime Playback -
in that case both channels play as expected.

I have messed with every possible setting that I am aware of within
Finale and the respective Kontakt and SmartMusic players - to no
avail. I did not have this problem before updating to Finale 2008
(from 2007 on the same computer.)

This is *quite* annoying to say the least, and severely limits my
ability to use Finale. Your help would be most appreciated.

Their response:

This is a known issue at this time. Our developers are aware of this
and working on a fix for this issue. Thank you for reporting this.

So if you were tearing your hair out over this (I was for several
hours) - don't bother! Hopefully this fix will come quicker than
many other outstanding bugs... :(I don't know if this affects
only Mac or only Intel Mac, but it was definitely new to Finale 2008.

[Finale] printing to large format

2007-05-28 Thread Bob Shuster
I've been trying to no avail to print a score to large (tabloid -
11x17) paper from Finale. I've tried adjusting the page setup, tried
all sorts of stuff in the print dialog, tried all sorts of settings
with my printer - all to no avail.

Setup is MacPro (Intel) running OS X 10.4.9 & Finale 2007c, printer
is HP LaserJet 5200.

I laid the score out originally in landscape mode for normal letter-
sized paper, but no matter what I do it still prints at that size on
the larger paper. I even tried saving it as a PDF and then printing
larger from the PDF file - that didn't work either.

[Finale] Execute Shape to control tempo?!?

2007-02-17 Thread Bob Shuster
I've probably spent way too much time on this already, as it doesn't
affect the printout, but it bugs me that I can't figure it out - so I
appeal to the gurus among you for help! :)

I have a piece in 6/8 - the tempo is set at the beginning to dotted
quarter = 60. I do have the human playback style on and set to
classical (could be my whole prob?!) In measure 9, I'd like to slow
the second beat down dramatically but incrementally, so using a smart
shape seems to be the perfect fit, no?

To illustrate, I'll label each eighth note in the measure as E1, E2,
etc. So my resulting tempo should be something like:

E1=40 (dotted quarters per minute)
E2=40
E3=40
E4=30 (rit. starts here)
E5=20
E6=10

In the next measure I have an "A Tempo" expression that also sets the
tempo back to dotted quarter = 60.

I won't bother the list with what I've tried - because nothing has
worked. Would some kind soul step me through the process - and
educate the rest of us while you're at it?

Thanks so much. - Bob Shuster

The consensus seems to be that I've got a long road ahead of me! For
the record, I intend to publish these works myself - I'm not looking
for a publisher. I just want to secure the rights to publish myself
and make sure any due royalties or fees are paid. I should probably
stick with original or PD works to start out, but much of this
material was done by me many years ago. Of course, I think I picked
the toughest category for my initial test pieces - Christmas music
(for brass quartet.)

I can second Mark's comment about publishers reluctant to publish an
arrangement of a song they already have more than one of in their
catalog. Years ago I was asked to do an arrangement of "Amazing
Grace" for a local choir that was going to Russia on an exchange
program. The Russians loved it, and everyone I talk to says it's the
best arrangement they have heard - better than any of the published
ones. Still, although my editor friend at my publisher really likes
it, he said they couldn't publish it because there were at least
three other arrangements of it in their catalog. I'm sure that's true
of other publishers I've worked with. At least the tune and the words
are in the public domain, and anyone interested in performing my
arrangement can pay me for copies. I've had lots of performances of
it this way.

[Finale] self-publishing & securing permissions for copy-written works

2007-02-13 Thread Bob Shuster
I'm sure this has been covered on this list in the past, but without
a "search" option for the archives there's no way to find it!

I'm considering self-publishing many of my arrangements, and while
many are original compositions, most are arrangements of existing
works. Where would one start with this? I'd like to A. have
permission to sell arrangements based on copy-written materials and
B. find out what royalties if any I might need to pay.

A quick web search yielded some information about "permission to
arrange" forms, but seems to apply to educators specifically, not to
commercial endeavors.

Anyone have any experience with this? Any guidance would be
appreciated - and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would benefit
from this discussion.

I know of no such document.

What sort of description are you looking for? How would you
describe a

[Finale] Re: Finale vs. Sibelius

2006-10-07 Thread Bob Shuster
I want to thank everyone who offered advice and some great links to help me decide between switching to Sibelius or updating to Finale 2007 (from Finale 98.)  I did take your advice, reading all the materials I could online and spending some time with each app. I first spent a full six hours with Sibelius.  At first look it does seem much more polished and easier to use, but after a while it became clear it was much more consumer and music educator oriented than professional copyist oriented (not that this is a bad thing - but it does not fit my application of the product.)  I then spent an equal amount of time with Finale 2007 - and while on the surface it does not seem much different than the version I was used to, it seemed much more comfortable and familiar - due in no small part to my years of use of the product (I go back to at least Finale 2.x - what year would that have been?!?)  I had done *tons* of tweaks to my default Finale files over the years, and I'm not sure I can make the same tweaks to Sibelius, or at least not as easily (for me anyway.)So what it came down to for me was: with which product can I most quickly get back up to speed and turn out copy that meets or exceeds my former output.  Finale won hands down - my update arrives on Monday.  I'm sure I'll discover a lot of the new "under the hood" enhancements that have been made - and I will definitely have to start my tweaking from scratch again.  I'm also anxious to see when it will be completely compatible with the Intel Macs (I have a MacPro machine) - particularly for my Garritan GPO and JABB libraries - which are currently unusable.FYI - cheap plug - I also ordered the most recent Finale 3rd party book I could find - Finale: An Easy Guide to Music Notation - by Vince Leonard (an active list member) and Tom Rudolph (a good friend of mine!)  Check it out.  :)- Bob Shuster___

[Finale] Finale vs. Sibelius

2006-10-03 Thread Bob Shuster
After many years hiatus from the music biz I am dusting off the old
onion skins and getting back into writing. The last version of
Finale I used in earnest was Finale 98, but I have seen and
experimented with both Finale 2006/2007 and Sibelius 4.xx. I do have
a lot of old music in the Finale 98 format, but I'm not all that
concerned about being able to reuse it. I'm sure I'd have to do some
major tweakage in any case, so it's just as easy to re-enter the
parts. One other consideration is that I'd *really* like to use the
Golden Age font - however I am confidant that I can modify it for use
in either application. Some of the fonts that come with Sibelius do
however look promising...

*SO*, what's the advice? Do I stick with Finale or do the Sibelius
crossgrade? What I have seen of the new Finale - it looks pretty
much the same as Finale 98, except with Aqua-looking buttons and a
lot of consumer-level features added that I'll never use. Sibelius
on the other hand, looks much slicker and fresher, and I've heard of
professionals using it instead of Finale, but all my experience has
been with Finale (with C-Lab's Notator sw before that! Does that
date me?!? :) )

I presume most of the readers of this list to be ardent Finale users,
but I'm sure you've at least looked at Sibelius, so I'd love to hear
your opinions on this (without starting a turf war of course.) The
issue has probably already been beaten to death, so if you'd rather
point me to an archive of such a discussion that would be welcome as
well.

FYI, I work mainly on a Mac (new MacPro machine pretty much maxed
out) alongside of Logic Pro, but I do also still use a Windows XP
machine, and could definitely see myself doing my recording on the
Mac and notation on PC if necessary, but generally I will use the
Mac. That being said, cross-platform compatibility of whichever app
I choose *is* an important feature to me.

Thanks in advance for your input! - Bob Shuster

[Finale] Donald Rice's Golden Age font

2006-07-29 Thread Bob Shuster

After
many years’ hiatus, I find myself getting back into the music biz, but I
am unable to locate a faithful old friend, namely the Golden Age typeface
created by Donald Rice.  I was unable to find much info on the web, and
have so far received no response from Mr. Rice with the email addresses I have.

I
had purchased the font (probably in 1996 or so) but I’m sure it was on a
floppy – which was long ago lost.  I’ve updated computers
several times in the interim of course.

Does
anyone have any further info on this family of typefaces?  Specifically, I’d
like to purchase the most recent revision somewhere.

FYI,
if you’ve never seen Golden Age set music – it is the most easily
readable music I’ve ever seen come out of Finale or any other music
publishing software.  The closest I think you can come electronically to a
good professional copyist (which Don Rice is.)
