[Finale] Increasing Playback Memory
I am trying to play, and create a playback file, of a full band piece I wrote. The composition is only 4 1/2 minutes long, but with 42 staves, playback of the full-sounding ending fades in and out. FINALE intermittently omits sustained notes and instead plays the shorter countermelody parts. I'm using SmartSynth instruments, not Garritan. Is there a way to increase computer memory, or FINALE playback capability? Or is the best solution perhaps to create a playback file with condensed sounds and/or fewer staves? I'm using FINALE 2010b, on a Mac with 4GB memory, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 duo, running system 10.6.2 As always, thanks for any suggestions. [Finale] RE: Human Playback Crash
Thanks, Christopher. Applying your tip, I solved the playback crash problem by methodically eliminating one expression at a time in--as well as I could recall--reverse order of having entered each. The apparent cause: I had created a one-word text instruction on the drum set part, “time,” placing it in the score several times. Perhaps Finale tried to attach HP to it (although “playback” shows “none.”)? Why this bug occurred makes no sense to me. But at least my file again works. Again, thanks. [Finale] Human Playback Crash
Suddenly a big band-style file I have been working on (Mac OS 10.5, Fin09) loads playback to 73% and then crashes. I discovered that if I bypass “human playback” the file plays (but without trills, scoops, etc.). Anyone else experience this bug? Is there a way to fix this, or a workaround to “un-corrupt” this file so it plays back? Also, I want to thank each of you on this list, and let you know how much I appreciate reading your posts daily, how much your comments help me with my work, and how much I enjoy you, the Finale community (even when at times some of you get a bit “grumpy” with others). Gerry Kirk BTW, if the “human playback” issue was addressed in previous posts, I apologize for revisiting it. Is there a way to access topics on the Finale website archives?___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Sudden Change in Document Size
I'm sure there is a simple fix for this. I just can't seem to find it in the manual. A Full Band score I am composing looks fine in page view for the first 10 pages. Then suddenly pages 11-21 show up off the page. (BTW on a Mac 10.5, Finale 09). Changing percentage to 78% gets me close, but not an exact match. What am I missing? [Finale] AriaPlayer in Finale 2009
If I read the Finale 09 release info correctly, Garritan sounds will use AriaPlayer rather than KontaktPlayer2. Then will KontaktPlayer2 still be needed when opening Finale 2008-and-before files? Will 08-and- before files play back with the new AriaPlayer? Also the Finale promo says: “All of Finale’s sound libraries work together seamlessly so that you can mix and match sounds in your score.” Does this mean we will now be able to mix Garritan with other sound samples? [Finale] Invisible Score
Thanks, Barbara, for coming up with a solution. And if you were able to get one system to appear you were ahead of me. Creating a new file is such a kludge, but at least I have a score to work from in rehearsals. It still doesn't answer the question of why the score is invisible in the first place, but perhaps I'll never find out Again, thanks for your efforts and solution! [Finale] Invisible Score
Thanks for your ideas Barbara, Noel, and Robert. I tried all of your suggestions a couple times, and in different sequences. Still no score is visible (yet parts print just fine, and the score is visible in scroll view). Robert, I suspect you are correct that the problem resides in my original 97b version of Finale. Unfortunately, I cannot open that application on my Mac in OS 10.4. I have nothing that supports the former OS. [Finale] Invisible Score
I used FIN-MAC 2008a to open a Finale file of a trombone sextet I had arranged in 1998 (on Finale 97b) of “Tangerine.” The file imported to 2008a just fine in Scroll view (and Studio view, too BTW). But the music is invisible in Score view—all that shows is the “title” and “arranged by.” I next created parts (with Manage Parts.) All 6 parts appear just fine. I printed everything. Parts print fine, but the score prints as a blank page (except for the title). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the score visible? RE: [Finale] Expression Tool Aberration
Thanks for the Expression Tool aberration suggestions. (I was in hopes someone would tell me I had a faulty FIN-07, or to “repair permissions,” or some such sage advice. Oh well. I’ll just have to put up with this little anomaly.) No, Christopher, I did not reset measure numbering. In fact, the last 4 arrangements I composed were only 100-160-measure settings of marches for trombone sextet —quite straight-forward FIN projects. Rich, you may have something, in that I did re-size my scores in each of those arrangements. (So I guess you are suggesting I inform MM, and then just live with the jump—can do.) And, Christopher, I will try your second solution of using “clear” next time I experience this to see if that solves the Expressions Tool’s displacement quandary. Thanks, all! [Finale] Expression Tool Aberration
Hi Finale Gurus: Anyone else experiencing the following aberration when using the Expression Tool in Mac-07? I create an expression (such as a rehearsal number, or cresc.) and place it in my score, and it jumps to a location other than where I have pointed. It is sometimes misplaced as much as one staff, or one measure. I then delete it, and re-place it, and it is fine. Just an observation. [Finale] Irregular Rest Placement
In MacFIN-07, to create individual parts from a “conductor’s score” in which I use 2 layers for paired parts (i.e. a staff for flute 1/2, a staff for clarinet 2/3, etc.), I built a “parts score” (each part with a separate staff). From the “conductor’s score,” I then copied the paired parts into both of their respective staves in the “parts score” (fl.1/2 into both flute 1 2 staves). Then by deleting flute layer 2 from the fl. 1 part, flute 1 remains, and deleting layer 1 leaves flute 2, etc. Now my problem #1 with rests: After deleting a layer, rest patterns (sometimes) have jumped to incorrect spaces on staves, but sometimes not. (e.g. at times the rest is above the staff, sometimes below, at times too high or low by a line or a space.) And this aberration changes from measure-to-measure. My question #1: (Aside from why this annoyance occurs) is there a way to select all rests in a staff and move them to the default location without disturbing notes in the measures? Problem #2: Many measures of this composition are in 7/4, and, after I split the parts, sometimes FINALE changes rest durations, filling in empty parts of measures in unpredictable ways. (e.g. a 4-beat rest may be displayed as 2 half-note rests at times, and at times as a whole note rest. Sometimes a 3-beat rest will appear as a dotted half, and at others as a half-plus-a-quarter rest. 5 counts of rest may appear as a whole rest plus a quarter rest; a dotted half rest plus a half rest; and even half-rest, quarter-rest, half-rest, etc.) There seems to be no pattern to this anomaly. Question #2: Is there a way to specify a rest preference, and to avoid dotted rests? (I personally avoid using dotted rests because the dot isn’t always apparent to players. And in the 7/4 measures the measure at times is 4+3, but at other times 3+4. I want the rest pattern to indicate this to the player.) Question #3: In the “conductor’s score” I hide rests in layer 2. Is there a way to select all hidden rests in a staff of the “parts score,” and get all hidden rests to show? PS. I am always impressed with the answers, and thankful for the patient responses members of this list make to my frustrated queries. Most recently, thanks to Chuck, David and Randolph. I wish there were someone local using FIN-07 whom I could sit down with and just watch, to see how they use it.___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Part Names after Page 1
In MAC-FIN 07: After page 1, is there a way to generate the instrument's names on their respective parts as either a header or a footer? In other words, the title, and page 2, 3, etc. generate automatically. How can I get Flute 1, Fl 2, etc. generated automatically on pages 2ff? Every time I try to enter a part name manually, it appears in all other parts, and the score. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Odd Transposition Behavior
I often compose for symphonic band on a 10-line template I have created using Setup Wizard. Then I create a 27-staff full score (from a Finale template) and import lines (one at a time) from my condensed draft into my full score. An odd behavior occurs: each imported line that I copy/paste is a major sixth above what I had written. I noticed this behavior in Finale 06, and it persists in 07. (I’m on a Mac G5). Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, or how to set up my documents to avoid this, or is this a Finale quirk? Anyone else encounter this? [Finale] Instrument Names
I’m so glad someone brought of the clunky way Finale does Instrument Names during part extraction. I have put up with it and worked around it since Finale 3a. After extracting parts, I open the page numeral for page 2ff, and add the instrument, such as: “Flute 1, pg.” then the #. Finale should offer us a better choice of solutions for adding instrument names to multi-page part extractions. Additionally, I discovered that when my score is set up to print on 8-1/2x14 paper, parts extract to 8-1/2x11 paper with an even-numbered page number on the left and in the center of the page, while odd- numbered pages default as right-side headers. Somewhere I must be missing giving Finale the command to change paper size and numbering. Instructions in the manual on these topics (changing paper size, page numbering, part naming) seem poorly written (at least they are confusing to me, and I am a manual-reader). ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] RE: Retrograde Flaw?
FWIW, I’m happy to report that I solved my own problem with retrograde, RE my post of December 27: Playing around (in 2006b on a G5 Mac) with a little 2-staff tune I am writing, I decided to try the retrograde permutation on an 8-meas. phrase (via plugins, scoring and arranging, canonic utilitites). It worked fine. I tried it on another 8-meas. passage of the same tune, and FINALE just ground away, never producing anything. Repeating this at least 8 times after force- quitting FINALE (and each time trying different settings of retrograde), I could not get retrograde to work again after that first success. Any suggestions? (Everything else works in FINALE. Is this a flaw in that plugin?) Although I consulted this venerable list, and called MM support, no one seemed to have a solution. After many FINALE crashes, I discovered the problem is quarter-note tuplets. (The tip came from MM, who showed me that FINALE retrograde still worked for a simple rhythm over a single measure .) The culprit? The tune I was using had one measure containing a quarter-note triplet and a half note. Retrograde apparently can handle many complex rhythms, slurs, ties, etc., (even eighth-note triplets) and multiple staves, but that tuplet figure (even on a single staff) confounded it. [Finale] Re: Showing Chords with Staff Styles (Christopher Smith)
Thanks, Christopher. Your kludge works on notating chords above 1- measure rests. It's also better than my fix of placing chords in layer 2, then creating a graphic rest pasting it on layer 1. And BTW, I know 1-bar rests aren't supposed to show changed chords, but, despite my advice to my client to the contrary, this is the way he requested this be notated. [Finale] Showing Chords with Staff Styles
In a Big Band chart using Finale 2006, I have entered notes on a guitar and bass part, then entered various staff styles, which hides the note values. Next I copy/pasted chord progressions from the piano part, using only chords in Mass Edit's items to copy. Here's my problem: chords only show up above rhythmic styles, and NOT above 1- measure repeat styles, etc. How do I get chords to show up above 1- measure styles, or slash styles? [Finale] Score per-cent changes mid-document
On several big band charts I have engraved recently, as I prepare the score for printing I discover that at about page 8 the display has changed size by about double. In other words, pp. 1-7 show as being at 100% and all 19 staves fit on one page. Then from page 8 to the end, all margins have changed, and notes display at double the previous page’s size. My current work-around is to change the percent from page 8 on. But still this is less than satisfactory, as margins for page systems are off from there on, and other page display items (headers footers, page numbers, song title, etc.) differ in their size. What should I have done when beginning my document to anticipate and avert this glitch? How do I correct this after-the-fact (get both margins consistent throughout the document and make display look like the same percent? A composition I'm engraving calls for accents with tenuto marks above (and below) numerous notes. [Finale] Tweaking Exported Parts
Whenever I write an arrangement and then create parts via export, I spend (unnecessary?) time tweaking the individual parts. Specifically, how do I-- --have the name of the instrument appear on all pages following p. 1. --keep spacing of systems consistent after p. 1 --make page breaks appear where they are beneficial to players (such as at multi-measure rests) Basically, I guess I am asking where is a tutorial on creating exported parts? [Finale] OT: Who Are You?
These 50 small bios have be such a pleasure to read! Here is mine: An amateur composer, arranger, and Finale user, I have resided in San Diego the past 58 years. I studied trumpet with Don Phillips at the old Thearles building. My high school band director, Bill Padelford, was my music mentor, and after graduating with a BA in music from SDSU, I replaced him as he eventually became the Superintendent of a HS District. Ozzie Wissel helped me join ASCAP and publish 3 marches when my band performed for the first of 4 times at the Tournament of Roses Parade. I taught instrumental music for 15 years (marching concert bands, jazz band, orchestra, theory, and even bagpipe band), before Proposition 13 was used as an excuse to remove music from the school day in my district. I also enjoyed adjudicating parade, field show, concert, solo ensemble festivals, and guest conducting throughout Southern California (Wildwood Music Camp, San Diego Elementary Honor Band, etc.) I left music for the private sector for 3 years, then returned to HS, teaching English and AVID for the past 20 years. And I just accepted early retirement. For the past 14 years I have conducted (up to) a dozen trombonists in an ensemble named Boneafied Brass, who enjoy performing mostly for charity gigs throughout San Diego. I have used FINALE sporadically since 2.0 on various MACs (currently a G4). I wrote my first symphony on 3.2. And for retirement, my wife got me a new Kurzweil 2661 and M BOX, whose possibilities I look forward to learning (help!). I am arranging some Baroque music that my very talented cousin in Montreal, Dr. Douglas Kirk, sends me for trombone choirs. And a friend in the Washington, DC area has been sending me some great jazz charts to re-score for a very talented big band leader, George Hipp. I must second what I sense from many other posts: my greatest joy after my marriage, family and cat is the camaraderie and friendships with which my fellow-music makers bless me.
