Re: [Finale] EPS/PS/TIF/PIC to PDF questions

2010-02-22 Thread Fiskum, Steve
Hello Paul,

I've seen this on occasion. It has to do with using a dotted smart shape
within a system. These shapes CAN give you the results you are seeing. It's
not always a consistent problem. The 3rd system is not using any dotted
smart shapes so as you can see there is no problems. As an experiment,
remove all dotted lines and recreate the PDF. You will see everything
perfectly.

This is very difficult to fix. I have had to hunt and peck around to find
the corrupt item that causes the problem. I generally erase notes, measures,
etc...then re-enter them which sometimes takes care of the problem. It's not
easy and very frustrating. I've also seen this happen on proofs back from
the press and it is usually a problem with the printer's RIP. I've also seen
restarting the computer and recompiling fix the problem.

This issue is not only relevant to 2009, it goes back quite a few versions.

I hope this helps you track down the problem.

Finale, export as EPS or compile PS listing, convert to PDF with
Distiller or with Apple Preview. I get this (missing staff lines,
stems, multimeasure rest symbol, Smart Shapes):
 http://files.me.com/haydenp/ozvsg5.

Finale, export as TIF or PIC, convert to PDF with Preview. All is okay.

Finale, Print, PDFSave as PDF. All is okay.

 1. Why would the PS and EPS files be damaged? Bad font (Maestro)?

 2. I know you can embed fonts in a PDF. Can you also do that in a TIF
or PIC file, or are those just purely image formats (like GIF and JPG)?

 3. When you convert a PS file to a PDF file, are fonts imbedded in the
 PDF?

 Thanks.

Re: [Finale] EPS/PS/TIF/PIC to PDF questions

2010-02-22 Thread Robert Patterson
With Mac 10.5 you can often solve font-related issues by clearing the
font cache. (Google the topic and you will find much discussion and
suggested solutions.) When I switched to Leopard I had mound of
similar sounding problems until I cleared my font cache.

If your Finale file contains embedded (or linked) EPS files, you
*must* compile to PS then use Apple Preview to convert to PDF.
Printing straight to PDF from Finale inserts the placeholder rather
than the EPS into the PDF (at least as of Fin09. They might have fixed
this in Fin10.)

Generally I find that Apple Preview is more reliable than Adobe
Reader, but I have not worked much with the latest version of Adobe
Reader.

This happens to me all too often.

As Steve says, it can be hunt-and-peck. I've learned to back up to the last
good symbol that has a line involved, and delete it. I'd do the 104
rectangle first (assuming the previous page is good). Then the dashed slur.
Sometimes just moving them a little gets rid of the problem.

The trick is finding the last item with a line of some kind that's entered in
a given measure just before the problem appears -- the order seems to matter.
If I change a measure and enter a graphical item earlier or later, the problem
may go away (or may move to another place in the score).

I chased one of these down for hours two years ago in a big orchestral score
with lots of lines and curves. I'd fix one and it would move down a page or
two. Eventually I chased it off the end. :)

Remember too, that Smart lines using custom arrowheads do not print
to PDF at all, causing errors in the PDF and EPS creation. I think I
remember there being issues with rotated text in Smart Lines too, but
I can't remember now what it was exactly.

I don't know, but it seems to work for some and not for others. I have
used this method without problems in the past.

You cannot embed fonts in a TIF file. PICTs are a little more
complicated, but I believe you cannot embed fonts either. TIFs are
bitmap files, while PICTs are a mixture. Whatever the case, I would not
use any of those formats if you want to make PDFs from Finale files. You
lose the font and vector information and the PDFs are effectively bitmaps.

3. When you convert a PS file to a PDF file, are fonts imbedded in the PDF?

Yes, normally they are, although with Adobe Distiller I believe you
could force it not to embed.
