[Finale] Finale MIDI question

2009-08-05 Thread Noel Stoutenburg

Friends,

Not that it's necessarily a news flash, but I find myself once again in
the state of Confusion, and without a map.

I had always assumed that there was some correspondence between MIDI
channels, and stereo audio channels (though I didn't have any particular
basis for the assumption), and only found out recently that Finale
playback output seems to be monaural, rather than stereo.

Now, I've already figured out how to achieve a work around, to simulate
a stereo recording, but I'm curious to know whether there is some MIDI
(or VST) controller setting which could be assigned to an expression,
which would direct MIDI channel 2 to the left stereo channel, with a
similar expression with different parameters would assign MIDI channel 1
to the right stereo channel.

Noel,

Finale output is, and has always been, stereo. The pan value in the
Instrument List (or Mixer) controls the placement in the stereo field.

Hi--
Not sure if this is what you mean-

Midi Controller #10 (0A hex)Pan

A Value of 64--pans center
A Value of 0, or 1-pans hard left
A Value of 127 pans hard right

I don't know where you get the idea that Finale is mono in its
output. While I'm using a very old version of Finale (WinFin2003),
I've been assigning panning settings for instruments for well over a
decade and the resulting MIDI files play out in stereo, with
instruments clearly sounding like they are roughly in the location
specified by the pan settings.

Of course, all my work is pre-Garritan and pre-SoftSynch.

Re: [Finale] Finale MIDI question

2009-08-05 Thread Noel Stoutenburg

Darcy, Bob and David,

Thanks for your help and indulgence.

The reason I got the idea that Finale was playing back in mono, is that
I've just upgraded hardware, and in the process, decided to install, and
experiment with Wavosaur. Wavosaur was for reasons I don't begin to
understand, only recording the left stereo channel, but seemed to be
incorporating all of the MIDI information within that single channel.
I've not changed anything (neither software settings in wavosaur, nor in
Finale, nor hardware, including cables, c) but for some reason, after
writing to ask the question, now I find that I am, indeed, getting two
channel output.

Well, except from the headphone output from my MIDI keyboard (a ten year
old Roland EP-75), but I see a bit of plastic wedged into the unit along
side the headphone jack, and I am reminded that I found a short in the
headphone jack at one time, but since the rest of the unit was
functioning as expected, and the unit was out of warranty, I didn't
bother to try to get it fixed.

It's almost as if there was a gremlin in the software, impeding the two
channel playback until just after I had asked a question that made me
appear more provide own adjective here that I think I am.
