[Finale] Hyperscribe Transcription, Quantization, Midi-files

2011-03-23 Thread Benjamin T Riddles, II
I'm a dinosaur with Finale, original serial number 1001, having purchased
finale 1.0 in the late '80's (for $1,000 no less.) Since then I've upgraded
several times to Finale 2010, and have struggled to keep up with the
changes. My question involves problems I continue to have with Hyperscribe
transcription, and wonder if I've missed something through the decades. In
a nutshell, here's the issue:

I typically write compositions using Finale's speedy entry tool. I find
that's the most precise way to enter music, certainly quicker than editing
hyperscribe entries. When the piece is finished I save it as a standard
midi file to MOTU's Digital Performer, because of its more sophisticated
play-back and sound editing files. (My experience is that human playback
doesn't have the requisite precision required for effective playback of what
I intended.)

Now that Finale has Garritan Instruments - which are much better and more
manipulatable than my synth sounds -- I would like to save those DP files
to Finale, and capture everything DP did, including tempo and volume
adjustments, etc. So I save a DP file as a Standard Midi file and open it
in Finale. Even though this file was originally created in Finale, it
requires quantization.

My files are relatively complex, typically requiring mixed quantization
settings, with a resolution to the 32nd note and rarely 64ths.The Finale
transcription and playback are always poor, with all the extra rests, rhythm
anomalies and the like.

Am I missing something? Is there an editing or quantization step I'm not
using properly? I have tried the tutorials. Thanks, Ben

No -- the import of midi files remains one huge black hole in Finale for
all but the most straightforward rhythms. They've added tons of bells
and whistles, they've made a lot of great improvements in much of the
program, but this remains one area where they don't put any development
dollars, most likely because not many Finale users are in your situation
and so MakeMusic doesn't get as many complaints about it as they do
about other things.

Re: [Finale] Hyperscribe Transcription, Quantization, Midi-files

2011-03-23 Thread Bob Morabito

Hi Ben--

Im very familiar with this problem, and so is MakeMusic--I spent a
very long time years ago with a tech there, and then it was upgraded
to a notation specialist to show them, and prove all these problems,
which they finally admitted to, and have done nothing about..and
probably wont.

I was trying to import midi files of a complex nature, and have
Finale notate them. They claimed that the problem seems to be in
Include voice 2 not being sufficient and more voices are needed-- a
feature request was submitted. Finale' s quantization would
truncate durations, and give repeated notes, etc..It was really unusable.

Eventually because of this and other problems, I was offered my money
back, and eventually started using Sibelius.

Thanks Bob Morabito

PS submit this problem to tech support there--maybe someday they'll
address it.
