[Finale] New monitor

2007-08-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
It looks like my current monitor is coming to the end of its life, so I
have been considering what to get as a replacement. LCD TFT screens seem
to be the only option now, but what opinions does the group have on
wide-screen versus 4:3 or similar square formats? Does Finale work
correctly with wide-screen? I thought I might see a lot more bars when in
scroll view, or two pages side by side in page view, but some of the demos
I have seen (generally web pages) have square formats stretched to
wide-screen, therefore they are completely useless. On the other hand a
square shape is probably better for the maximum number of staves visible.
Also does anyone have any other factors they think are worth considering
when getting a monitor for Finale?

Finale works great with a wide monitor. This kind of thing is handled
by the video driver of your computer (video card, I would assume) so
Finale has little to do with it, except that I love it. I can get a
whole phrase on the screen in scroll view (depending on viewing size)
and I still depend on Staff Sets so that the staves I need are visible.

I have an Intel Mac, which has screen rotation built in, so if I had
my 10.75 X 17.25 inches viewing area rotated 90 degrees, I could
easily get an 11X17 large orchestra score page onto the screen at
full size. I don't know what the Windows situation is for that, but I
think it is a combination of video card and video driver (which
happens to be there in Mac OS 10.4).

Highly recommended is the short answer. You won't regret it, but make
sure that your video card is up to it. Any newish one should be fine.

Finale works fine on these, assuming your computer and video card support
them. (You didn't say Mac or PC.)

I have two widescreens on my homebuilt WinXP desktop. The old Matrox G450
dual-head card has done a great job through several generations of
upgrades, but did require downloading a patch from Matrox for the
widescreen resolutions (two each at 1680x1050), which weren't supported by
the original drivers.

Newer computers should work instantly. My Dell laptop has a second screen
attached, widscreen at 1440x900, and it found and adjusted to the monitor
without a hitch. It certainly makes the laptop serviceable for using Finale.

It's fantastic to have a scroll view with an 11x34-inch desktop. All sorts
of magnifications can be used without struggling. Also, when working on two
Finale documents, having them large and side-by-side is excellent.

My card doesn't support pivoted monitors, but if yours does, you'll love a
screen this large with a full orchestral score in front of you.

One important recommendation: preview the monitors in a store. All are
clearn, but the cheaper ones aren't nearly as easy on the eyes.

Re: [Finale] New monitor

2007-08-11 Thread Carolyn Bremer
A wide monitor is terrific. I have the 30 cinema and I'll never go
back to anything smaller (or square). I can see (in a usable
percentage) a full score top to bottom, and one or more phrases left
to right in scroll view (often at 100%). In page view, I can get an
8.5x11 page at 200%, (just cutting off the bottom margin). Amazing for
editing. There is plenty of room for palettes and even a word doc with
text (or a web page or -- for those tedious days -- a movie window.
Did I just admit that?).

There are very few issues with stretching square to wide. There are
some smarmy web designers who add a command for full screen, but you
can always drag it back. I find few web pages force full screen, and
those that do are usually in fixed columns.

I'd simply get the biggest monitor that you can afford and have room
for. Screen real estate is a precious commodity.

I recently went from a 20 CRT (1600x1200) to a 20 widescreen LCD
(1680x1050), which I got for a very good price (the 22 at the same
resolution was $200 more), and it works very well for Finale (and other
programs). The only glitch was getting new drivers for my video card,
and that only took a few minutes.

I can now display an entire big band score at 75% magnification (very
readable) with more measures than I could before, or 3 full up pages of
text, or several program windows, and it uses less electricity than
before, which is goo during the summer when I need power for the fans.

If your drivers are set up well, squares are squares, colors are bright,
text is sharp, and you have more desk area. I recommend it.

What Carolyn said!

I'm also using an Apple 30 Cinema HD display (wide-screen) and it's
unbelievably great running at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 (!) on my quad
G5. A flat screen this size has been a 30-year dream for me! It's plenty
bright, too. I run it at about 60% brightness unless it's very sunny out
in the winter.

In Scroll View at 100% I can easily see (and easily read) 13 bars across
and 14 staves down. And I love the 200% page view, too. I definitely
recommend getting the largest wide-screen you can afford.

While I'd love to agree with you, a 30 cinema display (along with a Mac
and a card to support it) would cost more than my car did.

What's worse, a friend of mine has *2* of them on his Mac Pro. I think
I'll go throw water balloons at him. ;)

That happens only when the video card's drivers don't support the
different aspect ratio. It drives me crazy, too -- two people at one
of my clients' are running their widescreen monitors just like that,
and they just don't care! It would be terrible for something like
Finale, of course, and also defeats the purpose of having more
horizontal pixels. I don't know what that company's tech support
people are thinking.

I suggest considering a widescreen LCD with pivot capability. Then you can
pivot the screen to portrait and see a full page of the score on screen with
much better clarity.

I have a 20 wide screen with pivot andf would not give it away for anything
now that I have become accustomed to it. Actually wish I had thrown a few
more $$ and bought the 24 Wide with Pivot. But at the time $$ were a slight
issue and so I rushed. Ah well...

Now I am considering getting a dual screen set up with two of them. One for
the scores and one for other stuff.
