[Finale] Stability problems with Win 8.1?

2014-06-25 Thread Craig Parmerlee
I am running Finale 2014B. I recently upgraded my workstation. I would
have preferred to keep it at Windows 7, but the only practical option
was Windows 8.1.

Since that time, I am having crashes about once an hour -- and not
necessarily on the same functions. The crashes seem random. In most
cases, Finale was able to do an autosave during the crash, so I haven't
lost much, if anything. But still it is annoying.

I did the B patch about the same time, so it is possible the crashes are
more connected to the B patch than the Windows 8.1 migration.

Is anybody else having frequent random crashes in Finale with Windows 8.1?

If you get the updated aiolib.dll, your crashes will cease.

Re: [Finale] Stability problems with Win 8.1? aiolib.dll

2014-06-25 Thread Craig Parmerlee
I searched for that and all the information I found was in the 2011/12
era -- nothing recent. Is there some connection with this and Windows 8.1?

Where does one get this update? I couldn't find any reference to that.

And maybe more importantly, why isn't that in the patch already if it
improves stability?

Thanks,
Craig

Re: [Finale] Stability problems with Win 8.1?

2014-06-25 Thread Craig Parmerlee
Is anybody successfully using Win 8.1 with Finale 2014B?

I upgraded my music system about 10 days ago. Most of my time on the
system has been with a DAW. I have had all the usual annoyances getting
a new OS settled in and all the stuff everybody hates about 8.1, but I
had zero application crashes on this new system.

I had installed Finale the first day and gave it a quick checkout and
all seemed OK. Last night I started on a small project I expected to
have done by Thursday. I had a couple of crashes last night. Today it
has crashed 20 times and I clearly am not going to get my project done.
I don't see any pattern other than it is always after some keystroke and
mouse click. I mean, it doesn't crash if I am just staring at it.
Other than that, I don't see a pattern. it has crashed on just about
every tool I have used (speedy entry, chords, expressions, all of them.
And it has crashed just hitting the spacebar to playback.

Completely useless at this point.

I changed a lot of hardware in the process of building the new
workstation. I had dual monitors before without a problem. I upgraded
one of those monitors to a big multitouch. I am using the same audio
interface (Presonus Audiobox), but I think I had to upgrade the driver.
I know people have had some problems with the patch. I am thinking at
this point of wiping out Finale and Garritan and reinstalling Finale
with just patch A. Any advice out there?

Do these crashes you're talking about include the situation where a box pops
up with the notice that Finale has stopped working?

 Aaron J. Rabushka

Yes. And in most cases, that was followed by a recovery.

The fix that Jim suggested seems to have done the trick. It boggles the
mind that Finale would not issue a C patch to correct that. It is
really asinine to allow users to download this patch that pukes all over
itself.

The same can be said for other problems that are well known by Finale,
but that they don't bother to fix in a patch. None of my keyswitch
brass mutes worked. There was a document that instructed the user to go
into HP settings and make some changes. They should have put this into
a patch. And that fix only fixes half the problem. Now my bucket, cup
and Harmon keyswitches work, but not straight mute and not Open.

This company needs some service-oriented leadership. These things
aren't hard. They just require commitment and discipline -- refusal to
take short cuts.
