RE: [Finale] Scanning Software recommendations

2009-09-03 Thread James Gilbert
I've never had much luck with music scanning software in the past, but I
tried the v5 demo of PhotoScore and liked it so much that I bought the full
version. I have version 6 which does a good job with standard printed music.
They have an option that reads handwritten music, but I've not tried that
yet. I've had it for less than a month and have only used it for piano &
organ music. My only complaint so far is that the text recognition part of
the program is not as good as I'd like. Too many expressions (cresc, rit,
etc) are not read in correctly (I get 'tit' for 'rit' quite often). Phrases
are sometimes interpreted as slurs and vice versa. Sometimes, but rarely,
articulations and key changes are not always read correctly. These problems
might be the result of poor scans.

The demo that came with Finale 2010 was pretty good too but I liked the user
interface and final result from PhotoScore just a bit better. Compared to
past versions of the one that comes with Finale and sharpeye, I find
PhotoScore is good enough to make scanning music a viable input method for
Finale (or Sibelius). It has saved me quite a bit of time.

I recently had a look at the demo of PhotoScore from http://
www.neuratron.com/ : it looks very impressive.

I haven't seen an independent review that compares the various
scanning programs, but I think they all have demo versions: I'd
certainly try all the available demos before making a decision.

I own an older version of SmartScore, and for the most part I find it to
be pretty effective. A friend of mine uses Visiv SharpEye, and I've been
very impressed with how well it scans. So much so that it is on my wish
list.

The differences between SmartScore and SharpEye, from my limited
experience with SharpEye, are mostly speed - SharpEye is faster - and
the ability to deal with less than perfect source material. Put another
way, if you have a clean copy of a score both programs seem to read with
about the same accuracy. If the score is smudged, bent, folded,
spindled, or mutilated in any way then SharpEye tends to provide a more
accurate scan.

SharpEye is available in a demo version, download it HERE
.
SmartScore also has a demo, available HERE
.

I hate to be so wishy-washy, but really, you're probably best served by
trying both demos. But I will grow a backbone long enough to strongly
urge you to demo SharpEye...

I don't scan from scores but from PDFs, and I used both the
Smartscore Lite that came with Finale and tried Sharpeye as well,
Sharpeye was definitely better, but the UI is about 10 years out of
date. Whether that matters or not is up to the end user to determine.
It does make it rather difficult to figure out how to use, but partly
that's because it has a lot more features that then version of
Smartscore I tried (which was neither recent nor the full version).

I did find that importing from the PDFs was pretty successful and
saved me a lot of time in preparing parts when all I had available
was a PDF score. I can't speak to how the two programs compare when
attempting to scan printed music.

I will admit that I haven't done all that much scanning for
work with Finale (or Sibelius) but when I did experiment, I
found that Sharpeye was the best software. It's available
from www.recordare.com and it outperformed the other
scanning software I tried (that which came with Finale and
with Sibelius.)

I will also admit that it has been a few years since I
experimented with it, and the scanning programs bundled with
Finale and Sibelius may well have improved, but I just
thought you should give Sharpeye a try. There is a
downloadable demo to experiment with.
