HI: More Finale 2014 issues. I'm starting on a new file (scene). I began with the Double Bass part, and everything transferred from the score except one tempo marking. And it won't let me enter that one into the part, or a new either. When I go do Documents and Edit the part from there, the missing tempo marking appears, but then the dialogue box warns me that if I generate this part from here it will erase all the other documents. Must I live with this? Thanks. Paul On Tue, Jun 10, 2014 at 7:43 AM, Paul Boesing paulboes...@gmail.com wrote: Christopher: I am using a new IMac 10.9.3. Re: [Finale] 2014b preferences becoming corrupted quickly
Hi, friends! I¹m new to this wonderful list, been using Finale since its birth, been lurking here on the list for the past week, also have been flummoxed (infuriated) by Finale 2014 (Mac/Mavericks). A brief controlled rant, if I may it¹s short, but relevant to so much of what I¹ve read on the list thus far: As a composer of concert music (orchestral, chamber, recital, choral, vocal) who makes his living as a fulltime composer (published by Potenza Music but I do 99.9% of my own engraving), I believe it was an act of mindless irresponsibility for MM to release this so-called ³upgrade,² and I can only hope that someone from the Home Office is monitoring the very savvy observations that you (and soon, I) bring to the communal discussion table. Happily, I kept 2012 on my machine and have reverted for now, until MM gets its act together with a clean sweep of the endless bugs that seem to be embedded throughout the 2014 code. I don¹t have the time to parry and thrust with unexpected gremlins that simply SHOULD NOT be there. It is inexcusable, in my opinion, that we must wade through so many anomalies, identifying ³yet another problem,² putting them on a list, and fwding on what we find to the good folks at Finale THAT IS THEIR JOB, and that¹s why we pay for upgrades. We have every right to be upset, disappointed, and confusedand frankly, a bit hurt. I¹ve never before been treated so badly by an upgrade for which I¹ve paid significant cashola. End of controlled rant. And I¹m sorry for the SHOUTING. I¹m actually an upbeat, positive kind of guy but Finale 2014 has made me very angry, which rarely happens. I LOVE Finale and have been blessing its name since 1988. I want to continue to bless its name. Hey, it¹s great to meet everyone, and I thank my dear ol¹ friend, list member and composer Dennis Bathory-Kitsz (to whom I had been ranting about Finale 2014), for pointing me in the direction of this community I plan to add positive and constructive content going fwd, as all of you do. Cheers clink to everyone, from Siesta Key, FL (and in a couple weeks, Oxtongue Lake, Ontario), 8-) Jim | Jimbo | James | Jamesbo JamesGrantMusic.com On Jun-10-14, 12:05 PM, a caressingly warm and breezy Siesta Key kind of day, Paul Boesing astutely commented: HI: More Finale 2014 issues. Hi Chuck: Didn't know who you were at first, but I was about to look at your website and ask for help. Hope I can do it here. Dwight Thomas recommended you. I'm extracting parts from a 19 piece orchestral score, and I can edit and save some of them, but not others. I cannot find the variables; I'm doing it exactly the same way. Can I send you a sample file? There are seven more scenes to extract. I don't know at this time how many parts won't extract, but maybe you'll be able to discover that? If I send you the problem scene, can you estimate the cost? Thanks. I have a July 1st deadline, and I'm really pushing it to get it done. By the way, I just upgraded to IMac 10.9.3 and am working on a month's trial on Finale 2014. I was working on 2009. Paul B. in Omaha If your part names have any illegal filename characters, such as the / mark, then Finale can't save those files to your hard disk. I have found the safest way (even though it's a pain in the butt) is to not allow Finale to create the filename so that I get to create the file name. -- David H. Re: [Finale] 2014b preferences becoming corrupted quickly
Paul, can you tell us the EXACT name of the part that won't save? Copy and paste to preserve all the exact characters. This might give a clue. I personally am suspecting some sort of stupidity with the way Finale uses ancient filenaming protocols, but I can't guess unless I know more. I have a bit of experience with having to run a deke around Finale with some filenames. Christopher *deke, I don't know if that is a uniquely Canadian expression or not. It's a kind of a fake-out. Christopher: Well, I'm not sure what you mean by EXACT name of the part, but I've had more trouble with strings. I've been unable to save the Violin 1 and 2 and the Viola. Also couldn't save Trumpet in B flat. That one, actually, coverts right back to the score. Here is an example: MOL, Act I, sc. 2 6/9/14 Violin 1. Hope this helps to give you a clue. Thanks. I've never been able to use a forward slash in a name. Re: [Finale] 2014b preferences becoming corrupted quickly
Don Hart nailed it. Finale will write no file with a forward slash in the name, despite the fact that it CREATES this filename itself. I suggest using a solidus instead. It looks very much like a forward slash, but it is not an illegal character that forces Finale to choke. The way to type this is different on Mac and Windows, so you'll have to figure it out. Please open a tech support case with MakeMusic to complain about this. Finale should either treat it correctly or strip it out and replace it instead of just failing without an error message. Just found it for Mac. Opt-shift-1 gives you a solidus. Change your part names using this character and noone will be the wiser, and they will create files properly in Finale. Here's one. ⁄ and here's a slash for comparison / Christopher On Mon Jun 9, at MondayJun 9 9:38 PM, Christopher Smith wrote: Don Hart nailed it.
