Wouldn’t appear in “click assignment” but did in “type into score”…

I’m working a vocal arrangement done on a template created by someone else.
I can enter the lyrics with no problem, but there doesn’t seem to be any
view of the document which gives me the little thing on the left-hand side
with the triangles that lets me adjust the vertical placement of the lyrics.
Is there a way to force that gizmo to appear when it doesn’t seem to want
to appear on its own?
