HOW TO GROW A FARMER

Ithaca, NY

Q: When is a farmer just like an egg?

A: When it’s in the Incubator!!

The Groundswell Center for Local Food Farming invites you to a very
special Community Gathering at The Sustainability Center, 111 North
Albany Street in downtown Ithaca, on Thursday, July 18, 6:30 - 8:30 PM.

We’ll explain exactly what the new Groundswell Incubator Farm is and
how it works. A clue: It does not hatch baby chicks. Come to the
gathering to find out!

If you care about food, if you’re committed to sustainability and
social justice, or if you’re just curious about what Groundswell does,
we hope you’ll join us for this important conversation about the
future of our local food system. Come enjoy local snacks and
beverages, chat with some awesome new farmers, and find out how
Groundswell is helping to grow new farmers through innovative training
and business incubation programs.

Nearly 300 aspiring farmers, food entrepreneurs and activist have
taken courses offered by Groundswell. At least 30 of them have gone on
to launch a new farm enterprise. On July 18 you can learn more about
them, hear their stories, and find out why It Takes a Community to
Grow a Farmer.

You don't have to be a farmer to be part of this Groundswell! There
are many ways you can help Grow Your Farmer and support our local food
system, from volunteering at the Incubator Farm, to sponsoring one of
our trainees. Find out how – and why - on July 18. Share your ideas
about how Ithaca can take the next step in building a truly Community
Supported Agriculture.

Spring is an especially intense time for agriculture, including
agroforestry production like mushrooms. Finger Lakes Permaculture
Institute instructors Steve Gabriel and Michael Burns are
exceptionally busy sowing and tending animals, plants, trees, and
infrastructure at their respective permaculture projects.

Your help is sought to get a large harvest of logs inoculated with

Community Kitchen Input Sought, Ithaca, NY (April 18)

2013-04-17 Thread Michael G. Burns
  Event: Community Kitchen Public Meeting

Press release from Cooperative Extension:

Community Kitchen Input Sought

For over 2 years a group of food entrepreneurs and community members
has been working on planning a community catering and food processing
kitchen that will be available to rent by small scale food
entrepreneurs. Their intention is to build the Finger Lakes Community
Kitchen in space adjacent to the new Neighborhood Pride store on
Hancock Street. The space to be developed will be a 3,300 SF licensed
kitchen facility with multiple work stations and cook stoves,
processing equipment, and storage space to accommodate multiple users
at a time. The kitchen will serve both start up food businesses and
provide a professional commissary with new equipment for established
businesses to rent. The kitchen will also be available for cooking and
food safety classes.

The group working on the project is forming an LLC and is in the
process of securing funding from a variety of sources including grants
and loans. Preliminary designs and cost estimates have been obtained
but much more work needs to be done. To this end, a public meeting has
been planned for Thursday, April 18, 5:30-7:30 PM at the Greenstar
Space located at the west end of Court Street off Rt. 13.

Finger Lakes Community Kitchen organizers will present work that has
been done to date. Potential users, kitchen supporters and interested
citizens are invited to attend and provide input on the design,
layout, equipment that is needed, plus learn about how to become
involved as a supporter, member of the LLC, or user. Kirby Edmonds,
who is facilitating the development of this project, indicates this is
a critical time for input so that the kitchen reflects the needs of
food businesses in the community.

Come to learn more on April 18, 5:30 PM at the Space. Enjoy light
refreshments, and provide input into the kitchen development. RSVP to
Cooperative Extension if you would like to attend – 272-2292 or email
m...@cornell.edu

Permacorps: Organizing for Global Storming Other Crises, Brooklyn NY, Nov. 10

2012-11-05 Thread Michael G. Burns

From: Keith F. Morris ke...@prospectrock.org

While permaculture has a long history of international aid, disaster
relief, emergency planning, and long-term preparation- 'PermaCorps
International' began organizing formally after the earthquakes in
Haiti, and has been a loosely coalesced idea since. I think its time
to take some next steps towards this potential in our movement!

With the support of Claudia Joseph and the Old Stone House
'Permaculture Teach-In', Alice Lo and the Permaculture Institute of
the NorthEast (P.I.N.E.), Andrew Faust, the Brooklyn Commons, and the
Center for Bioregional Living PDC- there will be meetings in Brooklyn
next Saturday, November 10, to offer our network's assistance and
solidarity to the peoples of New York City, see how we may be of aid,
and strategize for better future organization of Permaculture Disaster
Relief, Re-visioning, and Preparation for increased Global Storming
and Ongoing Crises.

More details will be announced soon, please join us or share with
other friends in the NYC/ NJ/ CT Metro area.

In the meantime- NYC and Sandy affected areas- please don't hesitate
to let us know how we can help! Thank you for keeping us updated and
