[Fink-devel] Are you a graphics designer, can you help me and thus Fink?

2003-01-21 Thread David
Hello.
Some might know, that I currently try to improve the PR, look and
feel and Documentation of Fink.
Thus I am trying to gather a few ideas and contributions to enhance the
website and documentation in the future.

If you are someone involved with graphic
design or an artsy person, please do not hesitate getting busy. I am
looking forward to seeing icons for the website and maybe a Logo which
will brand the Fink project even further.
Currently this is a request to collect some basic ideas and gauges what
is in the back of your head. You can send stuff in as PSD, Adobe Indesign, Illustrator
or any other graphic
format. What I am mainly looking for is informative icons, such as "news"
"attention","documentation", "download" etc etc and a Main Fink logo.
Please keep in mind, that this will be a website only logo for now and
thuse it needs to fit into the website layout with its dimensions.

I know that I am not supplying much information, yet I am doing this on
purpose. I simply wish to see what ideas might be popping up. Of course I
shall try to put every work I receive online so that we all can have a
look at your excellent pieces of work.

Thank you in advance.

[Fink-devel] libpng woes (forwarded)

2003-01-21 Thread David R. Morrison
From: Thomas Thatcher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Dave,

An avid fink user in the MacOSX Hints forum has reported an unusual
problem this morning. I wonder if you might know anything about it
since the cvs update for this morning installed new versions of libpng
which is supposedly wrecking gnome and some other package installs.
The following is a copy of his post to the forum:

Gnome Warning!!!

If you have Gnome installed, and you do a "fink update-all", you are in
for a bad surprise. The update will uninstall libpng 1.0.12-6 and
replace it with libpng3 which in turn will dump all your Gnome graphics
into an unreadable state. You will get a warning that Gnome was
compiled with 1.0.12 and that the libpng3 won't work. So the logical
thing to do would be to uninstall/reinstall to a libpng 1.0.12 and then
totally rebuild Gnome-core. But no, that does not work! In other words,
if you like using Gnome, and you do a Fink update-all, you will trash
Gnome into a totallu unuseable state, never to work again.

You can rebuild all you want. It won't work. I
deleted-reinstalled-rebuilt, using every possible combination of
building and nothing works. *&*$% @#$^% &^&
*&*&^%!!

Now I haven't notified the Fink Folks. I am to &*&^%^%$%en mad. I let
Sao do it if he has the same problem. He is more patient than I. I am
really mad.

EDIT: So I checked everything else out. Windowmaker is half-trashed,
Blackbox the same. In other words, a simple "fink update-all"
totally trashed my Fink install this morning. I give up! I am pulling
out my Debian PPC CDs that I had someone burn for me last week.

Bye-bye OSX and Fink!!! ToodleLoo Kind folks
Back to Debian..

[Fink-devel] Re: libpng woes (forwarded)

2003-01-21 Thread David R. Morrison
OK, we have a pretty serious problem here.

As some of you know, it began with kde, where it was discovered that compiling
kde with libpng3 led to runtime problems apparently caused by imlib not
having been updated to libpng3.

So someone updated imlib to libpng3, and now gnome users are having tremendous
trouble.

There are two issues: (1) how to we quickly restore things to a stable state
for the sake of our users, and (2) how do we ever do these upgrades correctly?

The only solution to (1) that I see is to downgrade everything back to libpng.
I don't know a solution to (2) at the moment.

Comments?

That or to *upgrade* everything to libpng3. As far as I'm aware they're
source-compat. (I think)

It's gonna be a buttload of building either way, it seems like if it's
got to come to that, we should at least bring old packages using the old
one current.

I don't know a solution to (2) at the moment.

I don't either, other than big massive updates all at once. :(

Sure. The problem is, how do we trigger the upgrade? We need to make sure
that everything is *rebuilt* after upgrading, right? So does this mean
a versioned dependency on anything linked against imlib, for example?

P.S. I added a message to users, inspired by this situation, to Fink's

I'm not sure that's the case. Since the deps are all indirect, isn't it
possible to rebuild the packages that link libpng against libpng3 and
the ones using libpng3 already would just work? The way the warning
messages come out, it sounds like it's a runtime issue of loading 2
versions of the same library, not that the libpng3 app is somehow also
getting libpng symbols at build-time...

But yeah, if that is the case, we'd have to upgrade everything that
touches it and force a versioned dep. Erg...

Re: [Fink-devel] Re: libpng woes (forwarded)

2003-01-21 Thread David R. Morrison
My understanding from earlier discussions is that if you have imlib installed
and build a package which uses imlib-config, then -lpng is inserted into
your link line. Since libpng and libpng3 both use libpng.dylib, the
thing the resulting binary is linked to depends on which version of
libpng was installed when you made this compile.

So I guess we need explicit build-dependencies to the correct version of
libpng any time it is going to be invoked.

Well something like
BuildDep: bleh 1.4
RundDep: bleh 1.4

could resolve such an issue. That way you can force another package to
rebuild. If the Run Dependency is higher than the installed library the
package has to rebuild. Of course this would introduce more load to the
dependency code, because there is a need to check which packages need
XY to Build F and which packages need XY to only run.

Or am I getting something wrong?

Ah, you're right. So build-deps are the only way to handle this. So I
guess the question is, do we upgrade everything to use libpng3? Or do
we downgrade to libpng?

IMHO unstable means unstable and thus those packages should be Upgraded
not downgraded. If it takes some time, well then that is the price for
running unstable.

With the current fink, the way to make a system-* package would be:

filename: system-perlmodules.info

Package: system-perlmodules
Version: 1.0
Provides: gd-pm, algorithm-diff-pm, http-dav-pm (parse the package
names from the output of "fink list --section=perlmods -w=200" and put
them all here)
Type: nosource
CompileScript: echo "Placeholder for all perlmod packages" >> README
InstallScript: echo "none"
DocFiles: README

(the README is needed because dpkg complains if you have zero files in
a package)

put that in /sw/fink/10.2/local/main/finkinfo/ and "fink install
system-perlmodules".

That will work for everything except things that have a "versioned"
dependency on a perl module. (cause you can't "provide" a version with
the current fink)

Actually, my bad, you can use "Type: bundle" to get around that. So
with Type: bundle you don't need the compilescript/installscript, etc.

Hello,

I am Barrister Ismaila Shidaku an attorney to late MARK FINK an
Immigrant, who was a business man/contractor in Nigeria with the

and their threechildren died in a car accident here in Nigeria.Since
then i have beenmanaging his properties, and a contract which he

account in Nigeria. I have contacted you to assist in repatriating
the money and property left behind by my client before they get
confiscated or declared unserviceable by his bank. Particularly, the
bank has issued me a notice to provide the next of kin or have the
account confisicated within a short time. The deceased has an
account valued at 15.5 million dollars. Since I have been
unsuccesfull in locating the relatives for over 7 months now I seek
your consent to present you as the next of kin of the deceased, so
that the proceeds of this account valued at 15.5 million dollars can
bepaid to you and then you, I and his accountant officer can share the
money. 50%
to me and 20% for you and 20% for him while 10% will be for expences
thatmight arise. I have all necessary informations that can be used
to back up any claim we may make. All I require is your honest
