Re: [Fink-users] iplike-pg82 install problems

2008-04-08 Thread Josh Berkus
Rob,

Does it matter whether Postgres is installed via Fink or not (the
machine has a build from Mark at entropy.ch? I wouldn't think this
is an issue. All of the required shared libraries are loaded via
Fink and the install does not appear to complain about anything like
this. Full dump below and thanks for your efforts.

I expect that you'll need libpq for pg82 in the system before install will
complete. However, the current failure doesn't look related to the lack
of PostgreSQL libraries. I don't know anything about building iplike,
though.

Re: [Fink-users] Fink going down the drain? -- was (New packages in tracker ).

2008-03-06 Thread Josh Berkus
Dmalloc,

This is our attempt at registering a not-for-profit, tax exempt
company which could help us take Fink to the next level. It would
enable us to improve our level of service, it would also enable us to
put a better system in place to acquire funds which will then benefit
the community as a whole. Right now we are struggling with that
 project.

Help is available from three groups:
1) Software in the Public Interest
2) Software Freedom Law Center
3) the open source foundations mailing list

For (3), let me know who in Fink is leading the NPO effort and I'll subscribe
you.

My suggestion is that you either join SPI or the SFLC conservancy until you
can raise some money. Then you can use that money to do a real
incorporation. I know from bitter personal experience that in addition to
the up-front cash and time, running a 501(c)3 in the US requires a member of
your project to spend 50 to 100 hours a year doing paperwork, plus board
meetings, etc. So it's not something you want to rush into.

Oh, and for my part, I think fink is better than ever.

[Fink-users] (minor) Bug: Kmail crashes if PATH is not set

2008-03-03 Thread Josh Berkus
Ben,

Thanks for your work fixing kdepim! I am now a happy kmail-on-mac user.

However, there's one small bug, which should be an easy fix:

OS: 10.5
Package Installed: 2008/02/24
Summary: Kmail Crashes if /sw/bin is not in $PATH

The existing kmail package (as others) doesn't add /sw/bin to the $PATH for
bash. If you attempt to start kmail without setting this path, it crashes
with some very confusing error messages.

Re: [Fink-users] kdepim building

2008-01-16 Thread Josh Berkus
AKH,

The maintainer has been very busy with other Fink-related matters and
has said to me that he considers them even higher priority to resolve
than his own packages, so it might take a little time.

And, on 2nd thought, if Ben is going to devote time to kdepim packages, I'd
rather he spent it on native 4.0 packages and not on 3.5-on-X11.

Re: [Fink-users] PostgreSQL isn't running

2008-01-16 Thread Josh Berkus
All,

In general, installation of database software does not imply that you
want the database server running. It might be installed as a
dependency by another package that has specific requirements for how
the database is set up, so initializing and starting some default
 instance is not really appropriate.

For that matter, some users will already have PostgreSQL installed and want
to use the existing instance. Or some users may be running the old Apple
Remote Desktop which unfortunately runs PostgreSQL on the default port and
causes a conflict.

pg_ctl -D /var/postgres/8.2/data start

Your domain expired?

You should have two weeks to re-register it before it becomes up for

I'll happily pay for 10 years of finkproject.org if you'll make kdepim

[Fink-users] Kdepim 3.5.8 still won't compile on 10.5

2008-01-08 Thread Josh Berkus
Ben,

My attempt to build kmail on my new MacBook (Intel, 2.2 Core 2 Duo, XCode

over the last 2 months:

... with no response.

Are you still maintianing the Kdepim pacakges? If so, do you have any idea
when this might get fixed? Pretty much nobody on a new MacBook can
install kmail now. If you're not able to maintain kdepim anymore, can you
say so, so that I can send out a plea for help?

Thanks.
