installs on an x86_64 10.6 install and it worked fine. At
least it installed fine, though I haven't tried to use the
software yet.

It works for me on 10.7 and 10.5/powerpc. My 10.6/i386
installation sees the same thing as yours, even on manual
installs of the packages, and my 10.6/x86_64 installation
can't use the virtual packages for some reason, so I haven't
been able to check there.
(10.6/x86_64 problem sorted out--package installs work there,
too).
I'm still fighting with this one. I can't find any glaringly
obvious differences between the 32-bit build and the 64-bit
one on 10.6.

Hm. Perhaps this one needs to be sent upstream? The bug is
actually extremely easy to reproduce in an octave session. I
don't know that the following code is minimal, but it is small:
info = struct (zeros (0, 1), {name, date, bytes, isdir,
datenum, statinfo}); info(1,1).name = asdf
These lines are inspired by line 115 of
/sw/share/octave/3.4.3/m/miscellaneous/dir.m . On my x86_64
build of Octave it works fine, on my i386 one I get the error:
invalid assignment to cs-list outside multiple assignment
message.

Thanks for the test case. It could be very useful.
I've filed a report upstream, and I'm going to test 10.5/i386 and
10.5/x86_64 to round out our supported (and semisupported)
platforms.
I think the issue is fixed. Watch for octave*-3.4.3-202 when you
selfupdate.
