2019-11-01 Thread Jorge Andrés Brugger lis...@dasu.com.ar [firebird-support]

Yahoo Communication:

Dear Group Moderators and Members,

Thank you for your commitment to Yahoo and for helping us define the
power of digital communities. Eighteen years ago, we combined the
functionality of a site called eGroups.com with a precursor community
platform called Yahoo Clubs to launch Yahoo Groups. Since then, you
and millions of others have helped prove our hypothesis, by creating
and joining more than 10 Million groups.

A lot has changed about the Internet since 2001, including the ways
most people now use Yahoo Groups. Today, most Yahoo Groups activity
happens in your email inbox, not on the bulletin boards where Yahoo
Groups started in the pre-smartphone age. Increasingly, people want
content and connections coming directly to them, and this is why we
continue to invest in Yahoo Mail -- including the recent launch of a
new Yahoo Mail app

that is currently the highest-rated email app in the App Store and
Google Play.

So, as our users’ habits have evolved, we have begun the process of
evolving our approach to help active Yahoo Groups thrive and migrate
to our email platform. To help you plan for these changes, below is
the schedule of how this transition will happen.

Beginning October 28, 2019:

  * Users will be able to join a Yahoo Group only through an invite
from the Group Moderator or by submitting a request to join a
Group, which requires approval by the Group Moderator.
  * Since we are moving Group communication from posting on message
boards to email distribution, uploading and hosting of new content
will also be disabled on the Yahoo Groups website.

Beginning December 14, 2019:

  * All Groups will be made private and any content that was
previously uploaded via the website will be removed. We believe
privacy is critical and made this decision to better align with
our overall principles.
  * If you would like to keep any of the content you’ve posted or
stored in the past within your Yahoo Group, please download it by
December 14 by accessing this link

.

As these dates get closer, we will send follow-up reminders. More
information about the upcoming changes can be found here
.

While this evolution of Yahoo Groups is inspired by how we see the
platform being used today, we know change can be difficult. Here are a
few important facts as we make this transition:

1. *Yahoo Groups is not going away* - We know that our users are
deeply passionate about connecting around shared interests, and we are
evolving Groups to better align with how you use it today.

2. *New groups can still be formed* - Users can continue to connect
with others around their common bonds and interests. From animal
rescues to sporting and activity groups, civic organizations to local
PTAs, members of our Yahoo Groups will remain connected and able to
share their activities and interests. All of the content that you have
shared previously on the website, can continue to be shared via email.

We know that Yahoo Groups is an important online extension of your
real-life group of friends, interests and communities, and we are
committed to supporting communities that rely on Yahoo Groups. Thanks
for coming along with us this far. We look forward to seeing where the
technology -- and you -- take us in the decades to come.

Sincerely,
The Groups Team

This is far from obvious. Those two choices are simply two possible choices of
many.

I would like the Firebird community to get off the antiquated Yahoo service,
which has presented operational problems fairly regularly, is clearly being
reduced, and continues to be neglected by Yahoo.

I would certainly like to see the Firebird community consolidate to one
platform that provides both forum-type access to threads as well as mailing
list-type access. There are platforms that do both. My current preference is
discourse.org.

Is this change something the Firebird Foundation could take a lead in?

We are using a forum right now. Yahoo Groups is both a forum (until the
28th) and a mailing list. I personally prefer mailing lists, because I
want to get things in my mailbox, and not have to go to multiple
websites and read the topics there.

Solutions like groups.io and Google Groups are a forum + mailing list

In any case, we are currently discussing what to do in the admin group.
In theory staying with Yahoo Groups is an option, but as it will be
mailing list only that is invite-only after the 28th , that doesn't
really have our preference.

I would not use google groups. For one reason or the other I've had
problems in the past. I suggest groups.io. I have already subscribed
several groups on this platform and they work well either via the web
interface or as a normal mailing list.

I've not been able to get in on my account for some time after the last
change of ownership I think ... and the advertising there adds to agro.
I'm surprised no one has said 'github' as well ... another irritating
mess with their own ides as to just how information is displayed and
seems to have changed every time I have to use it.

All the material on the secondary yahoo services should simply be
contained in the firebird website anyway and that ONLY leaves the email
messaging which yahoo is apparently not breaking, but a private email
service is the alternative that projects like php have used for years.

Virtually all of the email lists I have used since eGroup days are
affected by this farce. It would seem that the email messaging side will
simply be maintained so we can just carry on using it, but the one thing
*I* don't fancy is having several solutions to the problem depending on
just what each list decides. Various previous attempts to switch one or
other list to on alternative has failed since the alternative simply
never worked but there is nothing that provides the flexibility and I
switched off groups.io previously and blocked it because of problems
caused by previous 'upgrade' attempts, so until yahoo actually kills the
email service I'll probably just stay and eventually not bother
monitoring any of the 30 odd lists ...

It looks like they are going to close the site, but the mailing list
feature is expected to remain online (as far as I can tell from the
announcement, which to be honest isn't very clear).

If the site closes, yes. However, I have created a backup of the
messages from firebird-support, firebird-php, firebird-python,
firebird-java, ibobjects and ib-conversions, and I'm currently looking
at generating a basic accessible archive.

I don't have backups for firebird-general, firebird-coredocs and
firebird-architect, as those seem to be closed groups, and the tool I
wrote for the other groups isn't working. I probably need to add some
authentication, but I haven't tried that yet.

2019-10-18 Thread emb_blas...@hotmail.com [firebird-support]
Hi!
Recently I learned that Yahoo! will close Groups.

We will lose all the content?
Will we move to another platform? Where?
