RE: [Flashcoders] OT: Upgrading to Windows Vista

2007-06-05 Thread Paul Steven
Thanks for all the advice on upgrading to Vista. I ended up buying the
Ultimate upgrade version from PC World due to the urgency and 24 hours later
after beginning the install, and another trip to PC World to get a new
graphics card due to my old GeForce FX5200 not working with Vista, I have a
really slow PC now but at least it has Vista... Either my PC is ill or Vista
requires a beast of a machine.

My spec is

Dell Dimension 4600
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.06 GHZ
2.5GB RAM
250GB HD
GEForce 7600 GS 256MB AGP

And it gets a Vista Windows Experience Index of 4.2

And boy is it running slow!!!

ebuyer.com I find has reasonable prices and a good mix of versions
(including OEM).
scan.co.uk is another option.

Re: [Flashcoders] OT: Upgrading to Windows Vista

2007-06-05 Thread Ian Thomas

Hi Paul,
I just realised this comment was kind of irrelevant to your
upgrade. Hopefully it'll make more sense when you're actually trying
to debug what's wrong with your CR-ROM! Give us a shout if you need
to, we've just had to jump through all the hoops of getting Flash
products working on Vista.

With regard to your speed issues - a machine of those specs
shouldn't be running slowly. You haven't got Vista Ultimate's stupid
'full-video-desktop-wallpaper' turned on, have you? I'm now using a
machine with about the same specs (getting Windows Experience Index of
3.1) but it's perfectly acceptable for day-to-day development work.

Hi Paul,
The main problems we've had in migrating to Vista have all been to
do with installation - where you can (or more specifically can't)
write files to during the install process, and where you can write
files to at application runtime. The latter is very restrictive. (Our
disks write logfiles etc. and store settings during use). We've as
yet had no problems with Flash itself.

Cheers,

Re: [Flashcoders] OT: Upgrading to Windows Vista

2007-06-05 Thread Ron Wheeler

Should not be too slow,
I only have 1 Vista install but it is on a notebook with only 2 GB of
RAM and of course a much smaller and slower disk.
It is used to 3D CAD and it very snappy rendering moderately large
models. It keeps up with the mouse when the model is being dragged or
rotated.

Your PC sounds a bit more powerful and the disk will definitely be faster.

Thanks Ron and Ian - that is reassuring to know. Just need to fathom the
reason for the sluggish behaviour of my PC then.

[Flashcoders] OT: Upgrading to Windows Vista

2007-06-04 Thread Paul Steven
A client is reporting problems running a flash CDROM (packaged with Zinc) on
windows vista so I need to upgrade to Windows Vista to enable me to debug
the problem (I am currently on Windows XP Home edition).

Just wanted to know if there are any general problems relating to upgrading
to Vista I need to be aware of and what version of Vista is recommended.
Also where is the best place to purchase Windows Vista?

Thanks
