[flexcoders] Module unloads but FlexModuleFactory instance does not unload

I have a simple Module (TestModule) that I can load and unload using 
ModuleManager in a Flex Application (FlexApp). 

Profiler shows the following two new Live Objects when TestModule 
loads:

TestModule

_TestModule_mx_core_FlexModuleFactory

Each object has a total of 1 instance.

When I unload TestModule and force a GC, the TestModule instance and 
memory drop to 0 which is good. However, 
_TestModule_mx_core_FlexModuleFactory continues to have 1 instance 
and is using memory.

When I grab "before and after" Memory Snapshots in Profiler, the 
Factory instance appears in the Loitering Objects list.  The Object 
References for the Factory show 2 instances:

Instance #2 is coming from the Module loading process and appears to 
be unloading properly.

Instance #1 appears to be coming from mx.core:FlexModuleFactory.  
However, this code is part of the "generated" ActionScript that I 
cannot debug.

I tried loading TestModule into the "current" App Domain and I also 
tried loading it into a separate "child" App Domain, however the 
results were the same.

I'm using Flex Builder 3.0 (release). FlexApp is loading the 
framework.swc as an RSL.

Questions:

How do I unload this Factory instance?


Why are there 2 instances under Loitering Objects when the Cumulative 
Instance count is only 1?

i think there so no anything special in flex/php regarding security
issues. maybe only that you should keep in mind that flex client code
is executed by untrusted machine while php code is trusted as it's
executed on the server. so flex app is less secure by default if apply
the same principles as you did for server side framework/language. the
best methodology is to advertise your site as the most secure one and
wait till hackers bomb it, then fix and repeat again :)

MD5/SHA are hash functions not cipher function (encrypt/decrypt)

If i'm not wrong, this is security restriction in Flash player. Some
headers like Referer and the like shouldn't be added or modified by
untrusted program (e.g. flash movie)
I would consider using binary sockets to implement your own http
stack, if you need these headers badly.

the best thing to do in my opinion is to put your date mask in your resource
bundle and change it to whatever you'd like to use for each locale.

exact same problem. How would you 'add everything meaningfull stuff as

Yeah this is the case with Flex, I think it has something to do with
the flash player (but don't quote me on that) -- I'm sure this
question will have been asked on here many times before so maybe you
can find a more detailed answer.

HTTPService definitely has some idiosyncrasies such as if you don't
include a request object then all requests are sent as GET, and
sometimes when you do set a request object requests are sent as either
GET or POST (based on the contentType set on the service). The fact
that all these idiosyncrasies aren't documented makes it very
frustrating to work with HTTPService sometimes -- and like I said it's
probably more down to the flash player than Flex's HTTPService.

I myself am trying to figure out how I can add to or override the
"Accept" header but haven't had much luck.

Well well well. Turns out the problem is that my app is called 
BarChart, and therein lies the conflict. Since I need to keep the app 
name as is, I just instantiated the chart using the full namespace 
name: 
   barchart:mx.charts.BarChart = new mx.charts.BarChart();

The list renderers get recycled once they disapear from the screen,
make sure you set the "load" proterty of the image to true, and maybe
you will need to override the renderer "data" property too :)

[flexcoders] Flex 3 Compiler Bug? 1119 Error creating BarChart

I had encountered a 1119 error when creating a BarChart using Beta 3 
and assumed it would be fixed in the release. Unfortunately, I'm still 
getting the same bug and am curious if anyone might be able to shed 
light on what could be the problem - either on my end, or perhaps if 
this is a known deferred bug (can't imagine!). 
I entered a bug a few weeks back that seemed to just sit in the system

Strange little bug. If I change the BarChart to either a CartesianChart 
or ColumnChart, it compiles fine. It fails only as a BarChart.

I'm echoing the request for an example here because I'm having the
exact same problem. How would you 'add everything meaningfull stuff as
child of that UIComponent', when UIComponent.addChild() has the same
restrictions as the original component I tried adding the MovieClip to?

I also tried adding a MovieClip to a TitleWindow for a popUp instead
of the stage and had the same error.

hi, i'm seeing odd behavior in my application, whenever i use a custom
component that has states defined- my outermost viewstack stops functioning
(stops showing it's children when i change the visible child).  when i take
the states out it works just fine

here's how it's laid out

main.mxml -->viewStack in this class
-- stack container 1
-> custom component (2 states defined)
-> custom component (2 states defined)
-- stack container 2
-- stack container 3

the states code is identical in each of the two custom components












and it get's called like this

private function init():void{
this.currentState = 'graph';
}

is it a bug?  i don't see why those states should affect the behavior of the
main viewstack, but i'm sure it does- anybody know what gives or know a
workaround ?

I want to create a Rich Text Format (RTF) editor in flex, is it doable?

I was initially excited about the RTE component until I realized that 
the output is html. Has anyone created either an RTF component, or a 
reliable translation class from html to RTF?

My end goal is to create a mail merge component where the users will be 
able to create a document with tags that can be replaced with fields 
from a DB. Once merged I want to send it to a word processor such as 
word for rendering to the printer.

[flexcoders] How to get the week selected from the calendar component

Hello, I'm new to the group--primarily a Flash developer -->
attempting to learn Flex mxml/AS3.

Does anyone have any examples of how to get the selected week from the
Calendar Component?

For example, there are 52 weeks in a year, so if someone clicks on Dec
30 it would dispatch week 52 etc...I guess that I would have to take
the first Monday of the week, then for every 7 days add 1 until all 52
weeks have been accounted for.  I'm not sure how best to calculate this.

Also, if a user selects any day of the week on the Calendar Component,
how would you highlight or select the whole week as opposed to just
the day selected?

I read the links provided by Doug (thanks!) and came up with this. Keep
in mind that the "age" property doesn't have an instance field, so
there's no possibility of a corresponding setter. Therefore, the change
event needed to be broadcast from the set dob (i.e., changing one's DOB
also change's one's age). Note that there's a [Bindable] on the whole
class, to allow bindings to other properties.

application), if there are multiple events in same slot, how can i keep them
from overlapping each other, i tried one method by using hit test technique,
that worked fine if all events are in same slot, but say event 1 starts at
2:30 and ends 3:30, event 2 starts  at 2:00 and ends at 4:00 and event 3
starts at 3:45 and ends at 4:30 so a hit test of event 2 on events 1 and 2
will give a true but actually event 1 and 3 are at different slot but hit
test based rendering will modify width of all three entries and their x
positions as well. any solutions?

[flexcoders] Strategy For Organizing Complex Application

Hello,

Unfortunately, my first Flex application is probably going to be
pretty gnarly. After reading up on the basics, I did some rapid
hands-on prototyping and quickly found the main "Application" mxml
will quickly become a beast. I've decided that my next step is to
really map out my architecture and figure out how I can keep
everything orderly.

Seems like the tools I really need to leverage for this are
Application, ViewStack, State and Component in no particular order. I
also think "code behind" will come in handy. Here's a tree structure
of how I think I'm going to approach my organization...

This is using two observations. One, I've read that ViewStack is
better for emulating a "fresh start", kind of like a traditional
transition between web pages. However, a state seems to be for
modifying an existing view.

Wanting to work with modules small in size, I'm going to have
"Section" components which are really just MXML Components containing
a ViewStack and based upon some container. I think "Page" is really
just an MXML Component based upon a Box (unless someone can suggest a
lighter-weight container to use).

I'd really appreciate some opinions on whether or not this is a
reasonable approach. To me it seems logical, but I'd hate to find out
later that there are native tools for all of this.

modules and a couple RSLs. We're using lcds 2.5. I've not upgraded the
jars on the server and have kept our flex-config.xml,

Date has a year property
just loop through something like this

var dArray:Array = new Array();
var d:Date = new Date(birthDay.time); // This will create a new instance of
a Date with the same time as the birthday
var now:Date = new Date();
While (d.year < now.year)
{
dArray.push(d);
d = new Date(d.time);
d.year++;
}
Then the dArray will have a list of dates.  Your datagrid can have some
datacolumns with functions that define the value in the grid.

I need help. I tried using external XML files. But It's too much work.
I know there is a quick way to use the var date or something. I'm
building this with Flex. If you have any ideas. Please please please,
post.


The Application is that, the user enter's their Birth Date. The
Application should notice the Birthday and from that day until 2009 or
2008. It should show which day it's on. For Example: 1/10/1994, So
This person is born on January 1, 1994. And lets say on January 10
1194, it was a Tuesday. Now this application should get this date, and
show every day that it will be on or it was on. So Let's say January
10, 1995 it was on a Wednesday. It should say this. I am thinking of a
Data Grid like this.

Date |Day

1/10/1994 || Tuesday
1/10/1995 || Wednesday
1/10/1996 || Sunday(Just an example)

Thought I'd repost again since I am curious as to the answer. I am thinking I 
am missing something blindingly obvious since no one bothers to reply. Must be 
a valid question because I have gotten three private "me too" replies.

I need to communicate with a web service where I need to set custom headers. 
Seems to work as expected for both GET and POST under AIR. Using web browsers 
the custom headers are only included for POST when using HTTPService and never 
for URLLoader. Couldnt find in the docs if this is by design or a bug since 
they lead me to believe this should be possible (except for the blacklisted 
headers).

Debugging  a bit further shows that the same behavior happens when using a 
URLLoader. Then the custom headers are not sent.

Under Air tho the custom headers are always sent, GET or POST.

These headers are all truly custom so they are not in the URLRequestHeader 
blacklist.

Is there a way to set custom headers on a GET? Short of opening a Socket 
connection and writing out the HTTP requests?

Don,

What is your server configuration?

I had a lot of problems connecting Flex to Apache2/SSL. Something was
just wrong there - session disconnections and retries, high latency etc.
Then I switched to Apache1/SSL - this thing hasn't missed a beat so far.

Hi, I am looking for books, tutorials, articles that cover aspects,
best practices, and/or concepts of security issues - some kind of
overview.

Right now I am struggling to put together all the pieces you get when
you google for keywords like authentication management, encryption,
as3corelib, sql injection, ...

My setup will be: flex app with user login and data requests, php
scripts, mySQL database.

Questions:
1) What is the 'best' way to design a secure login process in flex?
2) After login, how will I authenticate when doing data requests?
3) Working with GUID/UUID tokens, will I have to encrypt those to make
their use secure? ... or is that a stupip question? :)
4) Is there any sample how to use the MD5/SHA1 encryption and decrypt
it with php?
5) I have found the term 'challenge-response methodology'. Anybody
know a (flex/php) sample for that?

These security issues are so overwhelming once you have to move from
the intranet or localhost to the real world. :)

with an editable datagrid, if you edit a cell value in the last row
and you press Enter Key, flex don't commit change and the cell don't
exit from editable state.
