Re: [flexcoders] About Flex to html5 migration
Hello, I believe that every need has his perfect tool. I work with Flex/Flash/ActionScript since 99, but also work with several others web technologies. You have to know and understand each tool available. I think Flex and Flash has a great future, but Apple and other people burned it a lot, on the consumer end. Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex alternatives
It is not just that... I remember in the 90's there was IE and Netscape... then came Opera... and then Gekko/Firefox replaced Netscape... now, there is Chrome. There are so many browsers, because each one of then thinks that he is the best for some kind of need of the user. that means: each one of then implements things as pleases then. the beautiful of the FP is that you (theoretical) don´t need to concern about browsers. I work with flash since 99 and that is true until now, even with iPad discussion (air rules!). Tell me one technology that accomplished that for 10 years. regards! But, since we can't count on that lasting, and even Adobe is telling developers to plan on moving to HTML5, it seems like they're pushing us back into x-browser hell. I didn't want to go there, which is why we chose ZKoss. Yes, there is still going to be HTML/JS/CSS ultimately used, but it's how much. Even Flex SWFs are wrapped in HTML and JS when deployed. So, it's not that I'm against using any amount of HTML/JS; it's how little can I get away with to avoid these issues. Even with HTML5 libraries, such as the much touted jQuery, is, to a large degree, an insulator against x-browser issues. If you read the actual jQuery code, it deals with those issues for you. Now, ZK has a ZK Client JS library, which includes jQuery, that is designed to be a communicator mechanism between the client and the bulk of app logic that resides on the server. So, your normal editing and data manipulation that you might write in JS in a full blown HTML5 app is actually stored as Java on the server, and executed as needed per the EDA (event driven architecture). This type of JS is typically what breaks the page on different browsers and versions thereof. By limiting the amount of client-side JS, as does a jQuery type library, yes, you have some exposure to potential x-browser issues, but not as much as a HTML5 app that does everything on the client. And, when there are issues, they can be resolved in the ZK Client library as a patch/fix. So, now it seems to me that developers have several choices. Stick with Flex and you won't break the browser; you just won't be able to have your app viewed by millions on iOS products. If that seems like a better solution that minimal exposure to x-browser issues by using ZK or some other technology, well, that's certainly a choice each company has to make. I don't know if there are cross browser issues with it seeing as we use older versions of browsers. One of the great features of Flex is we don't have to bother coding for compatibility between different browsers and versions. When IT deployed IE7, Flex applications worked just as they had before. Anyway, just my 2c from the enterprise perspective.

Do browsers in other devices really stick with one version of javascript? If between browsers, under windows, we don´t got a javascript running without a hole bunch of workarounds, what is the difference for others devices? You don´t wanna flash? I can understand that. But you will need something real to get the juice. You will need RIA. JavaFX can be an option. Silverlight already is, once the win8 got to devices. But none of then will work on iOS. Probably only silverlight will work on win8/metro ( 'will not run plugins... a side the ones from microsoft' ). Re: [flexcoders] Re: Styling in Flex is officially ridiculous
I guess what really made this easier for us in the past was the ability to use the 'prototype' chain to override properties and functions at a global level for all TextField instances. I know overriding the prototype chain is a thing of the past and for good reasons but it sure would be nice if ALL textFields in every component could get a StyleSheet instance from the StyleManager. I can be wrong, but prototype is still functional, am I wrong? Rogerio
Re: [flexcoders] Re: Styling in Flex is officially ridiculous
Hi Ben, I agree with Michael that you are beeing offensive, but I also agree with you that new devs may have some questions about it. So, look for skinning and themes in google. The button, is actually an 9 slice image. It doesn´t have any borders and such, because it is not a flex object. It is a image :) So, to witdraw the border, you have to rebuild the image. One way I like to do it is from flash. Just edit the object in flash, the way you like it :) http://weblogs.macromedia.com/mc/archives/2005/06/windows_xp_them.cfm This is an example of a skinning that I really like :P This is one good article about it: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/flex_skins.html Regards Rogério Gonzalez On 11/30/06, ben.clinkinbeard [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Michael, I have no desire to split semantic hairs with you. While Button may not utilize the border API, it most certainly does have a border. My frustration is in how that border is implemented. I assumed (wrongly, apparently) that that was clear from my two previous posts. Consider this. Developer new to Flex: How do I get rid of the border on my buttons? You: Oh its easy; just go find the several hundred lines long ButtonSkin class, copy it into a new class, go to the part that draws the border and add an if statement that checks for the custom borderEnabled style you'll be adding. See? Isn't Flex awesome? New dev: Ummm, yeah While your solution is plausible, its far from practical. Ben --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com flexcoders%40yahoogroups.com, Michael Schmalle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ben, This issue could only peeve you if it was actually an issue. The Button does not have a border. Thus, the border API does not apply to a Button. This is the reason they say upSkin, it's a skin. You could easily copy and paste the ButtonSkin class and put another style in the says borderEnabled. In the skin rendering method, call that style and put the drawing api section that contains the 'border' in an if statement. This way you just set ONE style and vola, no border! Peace, Mike On 11/29/06, ben.clinkinbeard [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes, I meant the button's border. The default button is a gradient background with a border around it. I just wanted a gradient. No border. What I ended up doing was to create a PNG that had a gradient using the colors I wanted, created a Button subclass (in MXML) called GreenButton, set styleName to greenButton, and then defined greenButton inside a Style tag. In the greenButton style I set the upSkin property to use my PNG and provided 9-slice values and also set the text color. This approach allows me to reuse GreenButton and set the label and width (among other things) inline. The drawbacks, however, are that I will need to create separate images for downSkin, disabledSkin, etc. for each and every custom button I need, like RedButton, etc. So all in all it is a fairly simple and tolerable workaround, it just peeves me that I can't say borderStyle: none. In my opinion, if a component has a border you should be able to turn it off. Its just an if statement. Re: [flexcoders] Re: SQL Server and Flex 2
Hi Judah,The connection to the server side is by XML/WebService/RemoteObject.Basically, your serverside script return an XML for your Flex application. In Flash 5, I was doing exact same thing, only that returns variable=valuevariable=valuevariable=value. So, XML is heaven! hehehe. Today, with webservices and RemoteObject (since Flash MX, I think) things go easy :)In flex, with dataproviders in every object, you almost don´t have to parse the XML. You could open a save dialog ask for the user save a data that was generated by the application on the client. The possibilities would be amazing. Here goes some examples: 1 - The user could browse to a csv file and instantly import to a grid, with no need to send to serverside. 2 - User would save app configuration on his machine and load again later. 3 - User could open some images and instantly display the thumbs. 4 - Usually the uploaded images are big, cause the user shot then using high resolutions. Flash could compact this image or even resize and encode in png/jpg before send to the server. 5 - The upload file could be compressed before send to the server. A xml usually became 10 times smaller after compression. Would be nice too, upload a byteArray to the server, cause today, you can upload only files selected by the user. Re: [flexcoders] Flex - Database
Hi Tracy and others... I had a lot of problems with it at the time and gave up, but if they got it working then it will be a very effective answer to "how do I query a database with Flex?"I have troubles with that in past too (Flash + SQL + IIS) with security issues. This time, the MS seems to improve some things on SQL2005 for webservices and such (xml too).I am testing some things with that, when it´s done I post here. But seems nice :PLike you say, it´s not direct, but is pretty more likely then use PHP or ASP or what ever just to do an Query. Re: [flexcoders] Re: Google Analytics and Flex
Hi All,I was studing something about it and find this:http://www.abdulqabiz.com/blog/archives/macromedia_flex/loading_javascr.php Is a nice way to do it.. will see that later.About invitation, in my analytics acount doesn´t have any kind of invitation. I think you really have to register yourself on the analythics system and wait for their response. I was thinking other way where you would read results into Flex. Where do I get an invite for the US, anyone know? I was studing the analytics, and is pretty easy to do it. Maybe web can adapt the history system to do it for itself. But in resume, you rave do execute an _javascript_ function on the actions you wana log. Rogerio On 7/25/06, Renaun Erickson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Google Analytics is by invitation only right now. So its kind of hard to review it. Also from the Help page. === Is there a Google Analytics API? Urchin does not currently provide an API to access the reporting data. However, we do offer export functionality for single reports in the following formats: * Tab separated (Text) * XML * Excel (CSV) This feature allows you to easily import report data into your favorite spreadsheet application or to process the data otherwise. https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=27257topic=8133 You would have to export it manually and then use some WebService on the backend to deliver it to Flex.
