[flexcoders] Difficulty when @embedding FP9/AS3 SWFs

2006-12-18 Thread Troy Rollins
I'm not having any problems accessing frame labels, etc. in FP9/AS3 swfs which
are
dynamically linked at runtime within a swfloader component, but if I try to
@embed those
same swf files, I lose all my ability to interact with them. Shouldn't I be
able to do continue to
reference their frame labels, etc.?

Looking for suggestions or examples on embedding simple swf files (animations
with frame
labels, and timeline stop() actions) and maintaining control of those files
programatically.

TIA.

[flexcoders] Swapping components but keeping a single ID

2006-12-05 Thread Troy Rollins
I notice that Flex won't allow me to identify multiple components with
the same ID, even if those components are in different view states. I
had hoped to reference a single ID no matter which component was there
(all the components implement a single interface.)

So, how can I maintain a single component reference for my AS to work
with, no matter which of these components are on stage? Is it possible
in MXML, or do I need to come up with an AS-only solution?

[flexcoders] Flex apps with a lot of content

2006-12-03 Thread Troy Rollins
I'm very excited about Flex2 and am moving my previous Flash projects
into it. Using skinned components, etc, has really been a joy, but I'm
running into an architecture problem that I'd like to get some input
on.

The basic framework of my application is working well, it has control
bars, some panels and such where server interactions, and data
storage, etc is handled... all this stuff works well, and translates
well to Flex's no timeline needed metaphor. However, one of the main
panels will be used to display the actual content... imagine that this
is like a custom acrobat reader (styled) application. The content
will not be PDF, but instead native Flash media types. Flex
components, images, swfs, flvs, text, etc.

Until the release of Apollo. I need to make this work within the
context of Flex. The content will probably all exist at authoring
time, so it can be laid-out and preprogrammed and doesn't *have* to be
dynamic, though that would be fine too.

So let's say I have 8 chapters of content, and maybe a total of 100
pages of media... currently I have a subclass of the panel
component wrapping it, and a subclass of viewstack set up to contain
it... these have some actionscript tied in so that they communicate
with each other, etc.

I'm finding that in Flex, the business and UI of an application is
easy and fast, while the content is more difficult to produce,
populate and manage. So the real question... one viewstack? One for
each chapter? And if so, is the appropriate architecture to use
states in the panel which reference the addition and deletion of
multiple viewstacks, or add and delete them via actionscript? If using
states, is there a recommended technique for having a project which
includes a number of states? My experiments so far says that Flex gets
a bit funky surrounding states.

Mostly looking for some thoughts on how people would create a project
in Flex which includes a lot of (interactive) content. TIA.

[flexcoders] Content layout suggestions?

2006-11-07 Thread Troy Rollins
For my first Flex project, I'm developing a Flex version of an AS2
project I've done. The client is looking to do an update, and this
seems like a good time to move it to Flex. It has been easy to layout
the interface and wire it up (of course), but I'm not clear on how
best to use the Flex metaphor for the content layout, and am seeking
suggestions, links, or whatever.

Basically, it is training content, and takes the form of a bunch of
interactive slide pages, with some ancillary functionality already
provided by the rest of the interface.

So, what I'm wondering is how to manage and layout the actual content.
Something like a customized ViewStack for each chapter? Some of it
will be linked SWF files, but not all of it, and I'd like to keep
things as easy to work with as possible, since there will be a fair
amount of content. I would think that a single enormous application
file is not a good way to encapsulate things. In Flash, most of these
same things were handled with symbols in the library, and the symbols
were swapped in and out programatically. I'd like to come up with
something which works similarly, or better understand how to make
projects like this in a Flex workflow.

TIA.
