[flexcoders] Is creating symbols supported in Flex 2/AS3?

I've been reading up on the various ways to import a SWF and the
symbols it may contain - but it has been hard to find any
documentation on how to create/export symbols in the first place. 

I thought I'd seen something that said symbols were no longer
supported in 8.5 - but now I can't find the reference or what replaced
them.

As an example, if I define an Actionscript class, embed multiple jpegs
in Flex-based images, and then compile the whole thing into a SWF, can
another SWF import and use the separate images? 

Thanks for any guidance anyone can provide...
