I guess from lack of response that this is not a common problem.. BUT nonetheless after some additional trial and error, I found the solution:
I apparently had an unsavory mix of Flex 2.0 and Flex 2.0.1 on the FDS server side installation. Reinstalling Flex 2.0.1 FDS in its entirely made the problem finally go away.
