[Flexradio] DRM signal on 7073khz?
Hi All, Anyone know what the story is on the 2.5khz signal on 7073? Been on there for quite awhile this evening, about s7 peak here in Albq. NM. Looks like amatuer DRM, covers the space normally used by PSK31. . . Digtrx does not seem to recognize it, but I don't know what parameters to set. 73, Fred WA8KCW
Re: [Flexradio] DRM signal on 7073khz?
Much wider than psk31 and a lot narrower than drm but it is very interesting with its mesa shape. It's been there for at least the last six months. It's 20 dB out of my noise in el29 at 1100Z this morning. [Flexradio] rx signal versus preamp setting
I get the following s meter upper scale readings with the rx preamp and am wondering why they are backwards (the higher the gain the lower the reading). This is with no input signal to the receiver. off -95db low -102 med -119 high -124 Bill Nagle [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [Flexradio] rx signal versus preamp setting
Bill, This is a good question because the S Meter is working just as one should. Historically, S Meters have simply read the AGC voltage, which means that most are highly inaccurate. If you turn down the RF Gain on most receivers you will see the S Meter rise even though the signal does not. On the SDR-1000, we actual measure the true RMS power within the 3dB bandwidth of the selected filter. When you calibrate the radio with a signal generator, you actually have a highly accurate power meter that reads in dBm and is then converted to S units. When you reduce the preamp gain, you in turn increase the noise floor of the receiver while simultaneously increasing IP3. You are effectively shifting the dynamic range of the receiver to handle larger signals. This can be very handy on the low bands. So when the preamp is in the highest setting, the noise is lowest. That means you will see the noise be a larger NEGATIVE number (i.e. more negative = lower noise when measured in dBm). Hope that helps. 73, Gerald K5SDR FlexRadio Systems -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bill Nagle Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2006 9:47 AM To: FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz Subject: [Flexradio] rx signal versus preamp setting I get the following s meter upper scale readings with the rx preamp and am wondering why they are backwards (the higher the gain the lower the reading). Re: [Flexradio] rx signal versus preamp setting
Hello Bill, Keep in mind that the more sensitive a reciever the lower the noise floor. These negative db readings all correspond to voltage and so the more negative the number, the more sensitive it becomes or less microvolts at the antenna required for audible recovery. A reciever with a noise floor of -140db can hear things that a receiver with a noise floor of say -120 as it would be masked or covered up in +20db of "band noise". off-95db = 3.976 uvolts - not very sensitive low -102 =1.776 uv - not as bad med -119 = .251 uv - average high -124 =.141 uv- comaparable in other top end recievers ? -140 = .022 uv - very hot and when low noise 20 db gain gasFet preamps are added to an otherwise low noise reciever the noise floor approaches - -120 +-20 + noisefactorapprox -140 to -142dbm However, one could argue that superb sensitivity isn't all that desirable on hf. We can save that thread for another day. Programs like WSJT (digital program for scatter, tropo and EME) help recover an additional 10-15 db of signal out of the noise floor. So it "reaches" down (more negative) and decodes signals that otherwise wouldn't be copied using other methods. I'm sure these's a much better technical explanation comming forth but rest asurred your reciever preamp is working as it should. Hope this helps. Re: [Flexradio] rx signal versus preamp setting
Bill, [snip] On the SDR-1000, we actual measure the true RMS power within the 3dB bandwidth of the selected filter. [snip] When you reduce the preamp gain, you in turn increase the noise floor of the receiver while simultaneously increasing IP3. You are effectively shifting the dynamic range of the receiver to handle larger signals. This can be very handy on the low bands. I encourage anyone who has not done this to try it on 80 (presuming they have a reasonable low angle radiation antenna on 80 meters). I didn't realise this was exclusive to the SDR, but I can attest that it is a wonder. Before, even on my TS 930, a rig I loved, 80 meters was very often frustrating and unpleasant. It could be, I never tried the attenuation there and it probably helped somewhat, who knows? I know that whatever benefits that rig may have had, I never discovered them. All I know is that once I tried it on the SDR 1000 with my 60 radial vertical, it was like a new band. It sounds like 40 meters always did, in fact, and 40 profits from this as well. I'm working Victoria, Australia on 100 watts on 80. Try out the distance with W6EL Prop sometime. Never thought that was even possible with such a simple setup. Moreover, on PSK and RTTY, fiddling with the attenuation actually makes it possible to copy more stations than at full receiver power. It does seem to help S/N quite a bit. Captured Crete on 40 meters just a night or two ago that way. Maybe this is old news to a lot of folks, but the difference it made to me on my DXCC quest on 80 meters was like day and night. I've already reported my sensitivity on the hearing front, so you can just imagine how much I value an increase in S/N. Cheers for yet another valuable feature, Gerald. Larry WO0Z
Re: [Flexradio] 160 Meter Filter?
Jeff et all, the filter that is supplied with a new Flex Radio is a low pass filter. It does not attenuate broadcast band signals. There is a problem with the SDR-1000 (many other radios too) when you live in an area that has broadcast stationsin the area. Broadcaststation images appear in the 160 meter band. The Flex that I just sold was sent back to Flex and had a "bandpass" filter installed in place of the low pass front end filter that is standard. 160 meter operation is flawless with this mod! If you normally listen to broadcast stations however, you will not be able to do that after the new filter is installed. I am sure that Gerald or Eric can supply the information on what is needed to make this change. It is a couple of new inductors and caps and can be done by the owner without shipping it back if you are handy with the "iron". For what it's worth, I have had very good luck with high-pass filters by I.C.E. which I think are sold through Array Solutions. They have two versions -- one with a cutoff just below 160M, and one with a cutoff just below 80M. They handle 100 watts so can be put in the antenna line after the rig. I have very strong local BCB here (like -3dBm at the bottom of the coax) and these filters are needed for use *anywhere* on HF. They make a huge difference. In my case, since I don't have an antenna for 160, I use the 80M version which has much better rejection. 73, John N8UR [EMAIL PROTECTED] Larry W8ER wrote: Jeff et all, the filter that is supplied with a new Flex Radio is a low pass filter. John, Array solutions http://www.arraysolutions.com/prod_category.htm sells two kinds of filters, the ICE and the W3NQN filters. I bought the W3NQN filters a couple of years ago as I thought the specs were a little better and they are good for 200 watts. I am very pleased with the ones I have. Either one should be adequate for BC band rejection. I don't have the problem here because there are no BC transmitters near, and I enjoy listening to BC stations. I can receive most of the stations in NYC about 200 miles away with my 135' OCF antenna. 73, Chas, W1CG At 02:28 PM 1/26/2006, you wrote: For what it's worth, I have had very good luck with high-pass filters by I.C.E. which I think are sold through Array Solutions. Hi Richard, Record the .wav file using the Pre-Processed Audio option. Upload the resulting wav file to the HamSDR website by going to the home page http://www.hamsdr.com/Home.aspx. Log-in and select My Account = Upload Files. On the next page select Public Directory and click the Upload a file button. Then follow the directions. I have set up my SDR today to run as an auxiliary receiver. I put the SDR in Receive Only mode, enabled the Auto Mute on the HardwareConfiguration/Options page and connected a cable from X2-12 to a jack on my transmitter that will ground the connection when I transmit. All works well for the first few minutes then the SDR mutes continuously without the transmitter ever being keyed. I have tried to unmute by clicking on the Mute button, turning off the SDR, reinitiating the program, but the mute still remains. Even unchecking auto mute and rechecking it does not solve the problem. Running the SDR unmuted renders the SDR unusable due to overload. Restarting the computer solves the problem for a short while but it soon returns. Any ideas. Dale AA5XE
Re: [Flexradio] MOX in All But CW
Like Tim said, we will likely need more information to be able to help you with this one. Most likely you are receiving some kind of PTT signal, but it is hard to tell what kind. Do you have an external key plugged into the SDR-1000? Try disabling PTT on the Setup Form - General Tab - Options and see if that clears things up temporarily. I had to shut SDR down then set the mode to CWL or CWU to keep out of transmit. I I switched to any mode other than CWU or CWL the transmit activates. Im running 1.4.5 rev 12. I re-booted the computer, but the problem prevails. When I tried 1.4.4 the problem is still there. It sounds like I have a hardware issue- any ideas. Richard KE5DLQ
Re: [Flexradio] DRM signal on 7073khz?
Well, it looked like it took it (66 Mb) but at the end of the transfer I got a page not found error and I cannot see the file in either the public or private area. Can I ftp it elsewhere for you? It look great, about 20-30 dB out of the noise. Almost looks like someone running an sdr1000 with the noise generator. The passband edges are nice and tight. Upload the resulting wav file to the HamSDR website by going to the home page http://www.hamsdr.com/Home.aspx. Log-in and select My Account = Upload Files. On the next page select Public Directory and click the Upload a file button. Then follow the directions. The .wav files can become fairly large very quickly so 2 to 3 minutes is probably the optimum length for recording. 73 Dan N4XWE --- richard allen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'll be glad to.
