[Flexradio] Process Lasso

2016-03-04 Thread Alan
Something which I have added to my toolkit to troubleshoot freezes and
slowdowns is a program called
Process Lasso. You can find it here:

https://bitsum.com/

Essentially it monitors the loads of various programs, and how long they grab
the machine. Used as
intended, it will force ill-behaved programs to relinquish the computer. You
can also include various
programs it should ignore, such as PowerSDR.EXE, limit the number cpu cores,
etc.

Despite the hype on the web site, it really can help dramatically, but that is
just patching the
problem. Fortunately, it has excellent diagnostics, showing which programs
have cause issues, and for
how long and often. The trial version is fully functional for a few days,
which is normally ample
time to spot the problem and fix it. Even better, if you completely uninstall
it, you can install it
again later and get another few days. I have located problems very quickly
which might have taken
considerable time to do otherwise.

[Flexradio] Flex has already announced an updated version of PowerSDR to be released

2016-01-18 Thread Alan
But don't expect much. In the September issue of the Flex insider, talking
primarily about SmartSDR,
but see last sentence:

"630m and 2200m

For those of you that are experimenting with 630-meters and 2200-meters, we
added support for these
bands as licenses were issued, but we used the frequency rather than the
wavelength on the buttons in
SmartSDR. Since most folks are referring to them by their wavelength, we've
changed the buttons to 630
and 2200. While we're on the topic of new frequencies, some of the EU countries
are being issued new
privileges in the 60m band and we've modified SmartSDR v1.5 with these updates
as well. We're
preparing an update to PowerSDR that includes these new bands as well."

Flex is largely right that PowerSDR is a mature product, but there are still a
few missing features
and/or bugs that one could reasonably expect be addressed in what was, for the
VU5K, a nearly $5k rig.
The one which affects me and other VHF/UHF/satellite users is the lack of a
digital FM mode, 9600 baud
and up. For us, that lack is as important as the lack of a narrow CW mode would
be for most HF
operators. There are also some issues with the VAC in full duplex mode.

At Dayton 2015, I talked with Gerald at the Flex booth and asked what happened
to his 2014 commitment
to address the digital FM question. He explained that they had moved their
resources on to SmartSDR,
and there just wasn't any model which they could come up with which was
economically viable to
continue development of PowerSDR. He also said something about having lost some
data which would
require a lot of effort to recreate. The noise was too loud to hear exactly
what that was. He did add
that the one reason they would make updates was if there turned out to be
incompatibilities with
WIN10. At TAPR 2015, I talked with Steve, N5AC about the issue, and why it was
important. He was
polite and understanding of the situation, but also said in effect, business is
business, and that
trumps other commitments and promises.

Fortunately Flex has made the primary source code available, and we are seeing
developers add
functions or fix minor glitches. Thank you all who have the specialized skills
to do this, and are
willing to share.

Alan

Re: [Flexradio] FireWire replacement

2016-01-18 Thread Alan NV8A

NewEgg still lists Firewire cards for PCIe, PCMCIA and ExpressCard.

Flex chose Firewire because it was the only technology that would do the
job. Even USB 3.0, which was still new at the time, wouldn't do it. And
at the time, Firewire was still widely used for audio and video editing
equipment; is it still?

Now that most of the computing power is in "the box" in the 6K series
rigs, a lot less "traffic" passes between the rig and the computer you
connect to it, so Ethernet is fine.

Glad you got things working. Flex makes it easy to save a configuration, and I
have several optimized

happens such as you
describe. While a factory reset of course works, restoring a previously saved

well, with much less work to restore customizations. I normally keep a couple

Mike and Dudley,

I have the Mute on TX unchecked. I have two VAC cables defined, otherwise it
would never work. :)

MixW works full duplex, and is a good example. I have used it with my FT-847
using conventional sound
cards. (And yes, full duplex is selected in MixW.) In researching this, I
have also tried two
different programs, one to TX and one to RX. Each one uses only one, separate
cable, TX or RX as
appropriate, so as not to conflict. (The other input/output goes to a
conventional device.) In all
cases, the VAC RX audio cuts off when I transmit.

At Dayton last year, Gerald committed to fixing the last real deficiency which
affects me and many others who bought the VU-5K for satellite and VHF/UHF
digital use in general: the lack of a 9600 baud FM mode. Flex is developing
a Digital FM mode for SmartSDR, so they understand the need and how to code
it.

We had a contact at Flex, people to test the code, etc. After some initial
contact, communications simply stopped. My understanding is that the need to
get SmartSDR working was reaching the critical level and vacuumed up the
resources. I assume that Gerald will follow through with at least one more
update to PowerSDR. There are a lot of differences in the two software
architectures, but hopefully it will be fairly easy to port the code.

Is there a supplement for those of us with the VU-5K?

Is there a more recent version of the Preliminary BITE document? The notation

I just checked mine and noticed the same thing -- three
instances of PSDRDT
and three instances of PSDR corresponding to the beta installs
and 2.7.2.
The date on the .exe file for PSDRDT was 12/12 which did not
correspond to
any of the beta install dates but was probably Ray's last compile.

I think Ray should check to see if a prior instance of PSDRDT
exists when a
new one is installed and remove the old one (or at least ask
the person
installing).

However this arrangement did not cause me an error as far as I
know, but I
think I'll follow Dave's lead and uninstall and reinstall just
to make sure.

Couple of observations

I ran PowerSDR-Datatransfer on a second database and got the errors as
described by Alan originally

Went to uninstall PSDRDT and found I had three instances in
the programs and
features menu (probably from installing beta releases leading
up to 2.7.2)
Uninstalled all 3
Uninstalled PSDR 2.7.2
Uninstalled SDRDataTransfer (Ray's version)
Rebooted
Reinstalled PSD 2.7.2
Did the conversion from 2.6.4 to 2.7.2 (worked fine)
Tried another conversion during the same session , worked now
Closed PSDR DT
Reopen PSDR DT and conversions worked.
Rebooted and was still able to do conversions, no sign of
original error

Have you checked to see if you have the latest setup info?

To update, open PowerSDR-DataTransfer and click on the Options
button in
the top right hand corner of the program window.

Click on the button Update Setup Data. You should get a
message that
your setup data is not up to date and you will be prompted to update
it. Click Yes to update it.

If you have a reliable Internet connection, check the box that says
Automatically check for Updates and then click the Save
Changes button.

From this point forward, when ever you start PowerSDR-DT, it
will check
to see if you have the current setup data and program executable and
prompt you to update if you do not.

Re: [Flexradio] uz7ho packet soundcard help

2013-11-09 Thread Alan
Dave,

This is usually due to the delay in processing the audio through PowerSDR.
While not noticeable in
most cases, it drops transmission before the entire packet is sent. A quick
test is to use the MOX
button to lock the transmitter on and see if that works. For instance, I use
APRS and sent some
position beacons, which were properly decoded. If this does not fix the
problem, then it will be one
of the more normal issues such as deviation.

If that is the problem, you need to adjust the TXTail setting. Both MixW and
the UZ7HO programs have
it. I use 150 ms, but the number depends on several parameters, including
sampling rates and buffer
settings. Start with something long, 300 ms or more, and then cut it back
until you find the value
needed. Be certain to leave a bit of padding. For the same reason, you will
find you need very
little TXDelay since PowerSDR does it for you. :)

Someone gave me this trick, and it has worked for myself and two others I know
of.

Alan

Hi

I am running the UZ7HO packet soundcard program with my

similar issue with MixW before.

The program outputs to 11025 and I have my flex VAC line set to 11025.

What's the trick?

The Motorola switches I've seen all seem to be OEM branded Linemaster
Clipper series switches, look to be either dual 632-S (SPDT), or 635-S
(DPDT) models. So no need to look for anything Motorola specific to get that
level of ruggedness. And they are rugged, I think you could even drive your
car over them if you are so inclined.

The Linemaster Clipper type switches also come in a wide treadle versions.
And pretty much any of them can be found easily on that big auction site. I
have picked some up over the years and never paid more than about $20 for
any one of them, usually brand new, new condition. For my use I just screwed
the various Clipper 63x foot switches I have down to a 16x48 inch wood
platform under the radio bench, so they don't move no matter what. The
clipper series are also quite repairable, as the internal switch is just a
generic microswitch which are readily available from many sources.

Yep the best footswitch is the
Motorola console footswitch. You can find single and dual units at flea

This release of PowerSDR contains a new Firewire driver for the
FLEX-5000 and FLEX-3000 SDRs and new firmware for all FLEX Series SDRs.
It is highly recommended that you review the PowerSDR v2.6.4 Release
Notes before installing to minimize any installation problems you may
encounter.

===
PowerSDR v2.6.4 Major Feature Highlights:

A new and improved Firewire Driver for the FLEX-5000 and FLEX-3000 -
This update is the most significant in the PowerSDR v2.4.6 release. The
4.1.1.17085 streaming Firewire driver fixes numerous defects and
provides some additional performance improvements over the 4.0.0
Firewire driver. A significant amount of development resources went
into qualifying this new Firewire driver, as hardware drivers are
foundational components of the PowerSDR / FLEX-5000 / FLEX-3000 radio
system. Due to the Firewire driver update included in this release,
please make sure that you review the PowerSDR v2.6.4 Release Notes
before installing. Specifically, how to use PowerSDR v2.4.4 or v2.5.3
with the new driver. Also users of Windows XP systems will need to
ensure that you manually install all three Firewire device drivers the
first time you power up your FLEX-5000 or FLEX-3000 after the installer
has rebooted your PC to complete the Firewire driver installation. The
need for manually installing the FLEX Firewire driver is not required
for Windows Vista and greater, as the Firewire device driver
installation is completed automatically without manual intervention.

New frequency allocations for EU countries - PowerSDR v2.6.4 allows
users in the UK that have had their radios modified for 60m operation
(requires a NOV and TURF software from your FlexRadio Dealer) to operate
on the new 11 frequency segments in the 60m band. Swedish operators now
have access to their 60m band segments (requires the radio to be TURFed
for Sweden). Radios TURFed for operation in France, Italy and Russian
have minor updates to their transmit frequency allocations. Please
refer to the PowerSDR v2.6.4 Release Notes for additional information
regarding the TURF software process for certain countries where transmit
regulatory compliance is required.

Additional Time Frequency stations added to WWV bandstack, Easy
frequency select for frequency calibration and a centered Panadapter for
the FLEX-1500 - The CHU frequencies with their default mode have been
added to the WWV band button (bandstack) to provide additional
frequencies for the user to choose for frequency calibration purposes.
To complement the new CHU additions, there is new a feature in the
Frequency Calibration routine that will allow the user to select the
current VFO-A frequency eliminating the need to manually enter it. Also
included with this version of PowerSDR, the default display settings for
the FLEX-1500 have been refactored so that the VFO-A carrier line is now
better centered in the middle of the Panadapter rather than being skewed
to the right hand side of the Panadapter so that equal amounts of
spectrum above and below the VFO carrier frequency can be viewed.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR v2.5.3 does not see 1500 new install

2013-03-29 Thread Alan
I am trying to use my Flex 1500 on my laptop with a new installation of
PowerSDR v2.5.3. This is a new hard drive so I have to re-install
everything. The OS is Windows 7. The 1500 shows up in devices and the
driver shows C:\Windows\system32\driverflex 1500 sys. I had been able to
run the program and the 1500 before with an older PowerSDR version. I have
tried the installation a few times without success, both with the radio
turned on and off. Any ideas what I am missing or doing wrong this time
around?

Any help posted here or email direct good on QRZ.com

Re: [Flexradio] Help with latency

2013-03-04 Thread Alan
Nick,

Which version of Outlook? My ancient Outlook 2003 does cause a DPC spike,
but not enough to lose synchronization on either my XP or WIN7 machines,
even with the Operation Mode at Normal. Try bumping up the Firewire
Operation Mode a level. I do have another program, Carbonite, which is very
bad about DPCs unless I do that.

That does introduce additional audio delay, especially in satellite
operations. For satellite ops, I turn down the Operation Mode to Normal,
and disable Carbonite for the pass. Sadly, they are only 10-20 minutes
these days.

I thought I would be able to use SDR Data Transfer to transfer my database
settings. Wrong. Must have read that somewhere that it would NOT work, but
forgot.

1. I had already backed up my database from 2.3.5
2. I exported the database from 2.5.3 after doing the calibration
routine. Then I tried to transfer the data from 2.3.5 to 2.5.3. FAIL.
Error message, not designed to take data from 2.3.5. The TX profiles did
not come over. Although it did appear to transfer over the memories.

OK, back to square 1 on setting up the new SDR settings. Which is OK.
Probably good to start fresh.

Luckily I saved screenshots of every setup menu.

I am still hearing just an occasional slight jitter/stutter on high speed
QSK CW. Not as much as before.

I am getting occasional audio pop like the buffer is dropping out. I had
this before and fixed it with a setting, but can't remember how.

We use a Logitech Squeezebox Touch to get sound from a computer to our
stereo system (we use the WiFi connection, but it can also use a wired
network connection). It worked running the Logitech Media Server
software on the Flex Windows7 machine, but now I run the server software
on my FreeNAS machine.

BUT Logitech has recently discontinued its Squeezebox line and replaced
it by the Smart Radio, which is mono only. Logitech has said it plans to
continue supporting existing Squeezebox products, so buying a closeout
Squeezebox Touch (which is a stereo device) might be an option.

Note that the Squeezebox line (and I assume the Smart Radio also) works
with Internet Radio as well, so you can listen to local (not SW) radio
broadcasts from all over the world.

[Flexradio] DPC statistics

2012-09-05 Thread Alan NV8A
My Flex-5000 has been running for more than 3 hours now with PowerSDR
2.4.4, and the new Firewire driver DPC screen indicates that the highest
DPC is 2596 uS, and on that basis it recommends Safe Mode Level 1,

BUT, there are only 8 DPCs in the 2000-2999 category vs. more than 13
million in the 0-99 category and less than 500 in the 100-199 category.
Does the Firewire driver take into account the *ratio* of long to short
DPCs in making its recommendation?

What is the downside of running in Safe Mode Level 1 vs. Normal or
Lowest Latency mode? What would be the downside of running in Normal
mode even when the DPC screen recommends Safe Mode Level 1?

[Flexradio] Flex 5000 power output

2012-07-28 Thread Alan Anderson
My 5000 has always been low on output power. About 80 watts on 20M using dits
at about 35 wpm on CW. My supply voltage during the test is 14.5 volts
(intentionally over the recommended) measured at the connection on the back of
the radio. Measured on a bird 43 with the peak kit. I questioned the readings
so on the same power supply my Icom 756 Pro III reads almost exactly 100 watts,
same slug and everything, using CW dits as well.

On older versions of the software - apparently you could adjust the power per
band, but I think at some point the option was removed. If you get an answer
not via the forum, please forward the suggestions to me. I blamed it in the
power supply until I bought an Astron VS-50M and tried the test at more voltage
than should be required.

BTW on a scope the output power agrees with the watt meter when calibrated for
the 100 watts on the bird and the ICOM as a reference. IC 7000 actually does
about 125 on the exact same setup, all into a dummy load that shows about 1.1 -
1.2 depending on the band.

[Flexradio] Audio to/from 6500 series

2012-07-19 Thread Alan Anderson
How far in the future is the ability to both send audio and receive audio via
the network interface? The new radios seem perfect for remote stations however
without the audio in out, it would still require a computer at the remote
location, really not solving the problem of having a remote computer. Also, I
would assume power on and power off are handled differently than in the 5000,
is that a good assumption?

[Flexradio] Sharing a COM Port?

2012-06-15 Thread Alan NV8A
I used to have SatPC32 in Yaesu mode controlling my Flex5K+VU5K and my
AlfaSpid rotator (in Yaesu mode) via DDUtil until some time ago when
Yaesu mode was dropped from the acceptable inputs of DDUtil: it now
accepts only Hy-Gain mode, and SatPC32 does not have a Hy-Gain option
because there are no Hy-Gain rotators with an Elevation capability.

Is there some way of having the rotator (on COM2) controlled by two
different programs: by DDUtil when I am not doing satellite stuff, and
by SatPC32 when I am working satellites? Maybe with one or more virtual
COM ports somewhere in the mix -- e.g., both programs driving virtual
ports that are then linked to the real COM2? The Eterlogic program looks
as though it might be able to create a suitable setup, but there is no
free trial available for the 64-bit version.

This is a classic and well known issue with the current FireWire driver. Any
DPC hit in excess of 2500 us will cause a buffer over run and the audio to
distort or freeze.

The only possible fix is to replace the offending hardware driver with a
better performing one which hopefully is the newest one from the hardware
manufacturer.

Robert,

Update your PC's BIOS to the latest version. Update your hardware
drivers using the drivers for the hardware manufacturer, not Microsoft.
I suspect the issue is going to be the network driver or video card

driver.

It will have a touch screen which can be skinned to emulate any rig ever

skin has been developed, but is tied up in court.)

By popular demand, the FireWire will be replaced by your choice of a USB 1.0
or RS-232 interface.

The power switch will be replaced by a lighted toggle switch, obtainable at
Ace Hardware.

You will be able to order the LEDs in 5 different colors.

The DC cord will come with fuses, like every other rig I own. OK, this last
one is clearly absurd.

Hope this helps,

Re: [Flexradio] VU5K With Dual Band Yagi

2012-05-13 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Paul,

I use separate antennas, but have found that setting the AGC-T properly is
essential. If set too high, it will amplify the noise, and it wipes out the
downlink. By backing off, per the instructions in the manual, RX works very
well.

If I found the correct antenna on the Gulf Alpha site, the antenna uses
separate feeds. For mode-J, it is very common to get noise. You can try
this filter. Depending on the rest of the station, the results can be
dramatic.

Is anyone using a 5000/VU5K with a dualband yagi for satellite work with any
positive results?

I recently put up a Gulf Alpha EZ Sat Dualband Satellite Yagi and it the
performance has been very disappointing. The Flex RX downlink is completely
'overwhelmed' during TX on the uplink. The RX panadapter shows a flat line
and a 10-20db rise during uplink TX effectively making my downlink signal
unusable in trying to find my signal on the transponder.

Before I ditch this antenna, I'd like to hear from anyone using a dualband
antenna for satellite work, and any suggestions they might have.

using high duty cycle modes such as Olivia etc - In my climate (summer

any more than approximately 30 to 40 percent of full output and even
this level will take PA temps to 80c and above - I now believe that it
is imperative that the PA temp is permanently displayed on the GUI and
not require operator intervention to display it Surely it is just a
small request to have this displayed when one considers the visual
benefits of having it displayed with a colour code to indicate critical
temperatures Owners Manual version 1.18.0 states as follows The
keyboard combination of Ctl-Shift-I will display the voltage and

between Celsius or Fahrenheit. Either value may be displayed against a

I have no objection to having voltage and temperature readings displayed

convenient location can be found. My suggested location is (if it is
technically possible; i.e., not violating some Windows programming
rules) on the right-hand end of the menu bar.

BTW, I was not aware of the option to choose between Celsius and

[Flexradio] Low DPC PCIe NIC?

2012-04-13 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Hi,

A non-ham friend has been having issues with his computer's Firewire,
similar to those which can happen to the Flex. He does video and audio
editing for some of the churches and schools here. Applying the techniques
and software discussed here, we have found, after updating the drivers,
BIOS, system and NIC power options, etc, that it is working much better.
However, it still gets hammered when there is network access, though now it
seldom fails to recover. That is solution enough. He just disables his
internet when editing.

However, since the NIC is on the Dell motherboard, we have been wondering if
a PCIe card might solve the problem? They are cheap enough to try. Google
knows all, and I have looked back through these messages and the KB, but are
there any _current_ Ethernet card recommendations? He is using WIN7, 32
bit.

I too have seen where network access can cause long DPC latency and I have
found that updating the NIC drivers often solves the problem. First you
should go to the website of the manufacturer of the NIC chip and load their
driver rather than the one supplied by Dell. See if that improves things.
You can also try another NIC plugged into one of the PCIe slots. I would
make sure that I get one that uses a chip from a different manufacturer.

But you should also look at what is running and causing network access.
Often it is not the network access itself that is causing the problem but
rather what is doing the network access. Background tasks that do software
update or virus checkers that run to scan data arriving from the network can
cause long DPC latency. You may find that disabling your anti-virus software
or getting different anti-virus software solves the problem as well. In
fact, I have not run any anti-virus software on the computer that runs my
radios for several years now and have not been infected. I keep my machine
behind a good firewall and I do no surf the web or use email from the radio
computer.

But I keep the internet connection working even when PowerSDR is running.
WSPR automatically updates the central database and my logging program
automatically logs to eQSL. So I want to have full-time Internet access.

Nick,

In the FM mode, the tail of the packet gets truncated. Go into the MixW
Mode Settings menu, Parameters, and set the TX Tail to 200 ms. That should
get you going. Once you are, you can experiment with smaller values.
Depending on sample rate and buffer sizes, you may be able to cut that down
to 75 ms or so. You can also reduce the TX Delay, since the rig provides
some of that naturally, but probably not reliably zero.

Tim,

Shortly after 2.3.5 came out, there were list discussions about taking
advantage of the higher VAC sampling rates, and changing the default cable
SR to 192 kHz from the 48 kHz in the KB article. There are 16 and 24 bit
Studio Quality selections. Is there an official Flex do/don't on going to
higher cable rates?

When you uninstall the old version of VAC to install the new one,
Windows will change the default sampling rate of the VAC cable to 44.1
kHz, so you will need to reconfigure them for 48 kHz

See the following KB article for info on how to do it.

[Flexradio] Virtual Audio Cable 4.11

2012-03-14 Thread Alan NV8A
VAC 4.11 has been released. I haven't used for long enough yet to know
for sure that it is an improvement on 4.09.

You can get the new version by substituting '411' in the download link
you received in the confirmation email when you registered the earlier
version -- if you can still find that information.

If you have trouble finding the information, you could try searching
your emails for the sender's email address: eug...@muzychenko.net

[Flexradio] VU-5K RX-only transverter question

2012-03-08 Thread Alan P. Biddle
A question about RX-only and transverters.

I have my VU-5K set up with an S-band converter, 10 meter IF, which I only
use for RX. In setting it up, I ticked the XVTR Setup RX Only box though it
is connected to the XVRX connector and effectively does nothing.

While trying to figure out how the main Setup|General|Receiver Only box
somehow gets ticked occasionally, I found the following. If I select the
S-band system, both the 2m and 70cm modes are also disabled for TX when I
select them. I can reset it at the main form, or go to HF, then any band,
and it will be cleared until I go back to VHF+ and select S-band again. If
I remove the RX-only check in the XVTR Setup, the problem goes away. It
really isn't a problem, but I am curious about the logic, and whether it is
a feature or a bug?

[Flexradio] One gotcha with PowerSDR 2.3.5 and SDR Data Transfer

2012-03-05 Thread Alan NV8A
I installed the new version, then transferred my previous settings using
SDR Data Transfer with the updated data -- and overwrote the 60M
bandstack data, with the result that only two (or was it three?) of the
clicks on the 60M button corresponded to the new channels. I saved a
copy of the database, reset to the default, then copied the 60M
bandstack data from the default file to the saved file. All is now well.

Perhaps Ray should include an Are you sure your really want to do
that? dialog in his program specifically for 60M.

I think I will like the new 2012 Default skin, and I'll even put up with
the FlexRadio logo on the panadapter screen.

I have had my Flex-5000C for years, but am brand new to the reflector.
I notice it is no longer listed on the Flex web site. Is it no longer
available?

I also heard some one mention the other day that they had a mother
board failure in their 5000C and were having a hard time finding a
replacement. Is that correct?

Lastly, is the DC to DC converter available that converts the nominal
12 volts to the various voltages the mobo requires?

Everything is fine for now; I just want to be sure I will not have any
problems in the future after paying the extra cost for the very fine
5000C!

ABSOLUTELY - I got one a couple weeks ago and am delighted with it.
Enough knobs and buttons to allow you to devote individual functions to
a given knob/button - none of this double-click versus single click

I had gotten completely comfortable with the mouse operation, but the
Hercules opens up a completely new operational style.

What sold me was that PowerSDR V2.2.3 was used as the basis for the
current Hercules-compatible PowerSDR. If we never get another
Hercules-compatible update, I can probably live with 2.2.3.

I LOVE THIS THING! I hope Flex can find a way to incorporate it into
their future plans - it definitely enhances PowerSDR.

What is the model number of this gizmo? Googling Hercules MP3

And does its use require a special version of PowerSDR?

[Flexradio] 2 meter packet with VU-5K problem

2011-12-09 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Hi,

I am trying to get my VU-5K working on 1200 baud packet for satellite data
transmission. The local APRS traffic makes a good signal source. The Flex
equipment is:

VU-5K
PowerSDR V 2.2.3
WIN7 Pro 32 bit
VAC 4.09

Packet software
MixW 2.20

MixW works fine in the Flex with all the usual SSB modes, such as PSK31. If
I switch MixW to the external soundcard, it works fine in packet with my
FT-847. The problem is when I try to use it on the Flex in FM. The audio
from the Flex speakers sounds OK, as does the audio using the VAC Audio
Repeater. However MixW does not decode anything, and the appearance of the
MixW waterfall does not show crisp RX audio. MixW is fairly insensitive to
audio level. Of course, I have turned VAC on, and run the VAC RX levels up
and down inside the PowerSDR Setup. Squelch on or off does is not a factor.
This seems to indicate something in the way the Flex/VAC handles FM is the
issue.

I tried this once a couple of PowerSDR versions back, and it did work,
though poorly and I made no effort to optimize it. Any suggestions on what
else to check? It is about the last loose end before I can retire the
FT-847.

No, Direct I/Q is not checked.

Another poster jogged my memory. When I had it working, I was using
XP pro.
I will add that I use MME for the driver. Windows WDM-KS give me an
Audio
Subsystem Error: Invalid driver. Don't know if this is relevent
or not.

No big hurry about this.

One quick thing. You don't have VAC configured for Direct IQ do
you?

Hi,

I am trying to get my VU-5K working on 1200 baud packet for
satellite data
transmission. The local APRS traffic makes a good signal
source. The

Flex

equipment is:

VU-5K
PowerSDR V 2.2.3
WIN7 Pro 32 bit
VAC 4.09

Packet software
MixW 2.20

MixW works fine in the Flex with all the usual SSB modes,
such as PSK31.

If

I switch MixW to the external soundcard, it works fine in
packet with my
FT-847. The problem is when I try to use it on the Flex in
FM. The audio
from the Flex speakers sounds OK, as does the audio using
the VAC Audio
Repeater. However MixW does not decode anything, and the
appearance of

the

MixW waterfall does not show crisp RX audio. MixW is fairly
insensitive

to

audio level. Of course, I have turned VAC on, and run the
VAC RX levels

up

and down inside the PowerSDR Setup. Squelch on or off does
is not a

factor.

This seems to indicate something in the way the Flex/VAC
handles FM is

the

issue.

I tried this once a couple of PowerSDR versions back, and it
did work,
though poorly and I made no effort to optimize it. Any
suggestions on

what

else to check? It is about the last loose end before I can
retire the
FT-847.
