 Subject: [Flightgear-devel] Newbie needs a mentor(s)

 Hi all
I've recently (with help from Curt) managed to download and
 run the Win32
binaries and have been very impressed with all of your work
 in creating
 Flightgear.
I would like to become involved with the project, but I'm
 looking at using
Mandrake Linux as my platform. Is there someone out there who
 could answer
my 'silly' questions as I'm new to using Linux as well - just
 to get me to
the point of being able to compile successfully !
I'm no newcomer to programming, or flight sims / real flying
 / aircraft
systems, but I'm struggling with two unknowns at once here.
And if there's any reason to choose a different Linux/Windows
 platform,
please tell me now before I go down the wrong avenue...
 Regards
 Phil

I am not a programmer or pilot, but I use Cygwin on Win2K to build Flightgear. Other
than a small hiccup with ld not looking in /usr/local/lib by default, it works
perfectly.
Having seen the stories on the list of people struggling to get 3D accelleration
working in Linux, I am planning to stay with Win32 for the time being.

Richard

You can do equally well with any linux release, or cygwin on windows

just get the latest plib, simgear, and flightgear cvs release when you are
ready to try compiling :)

I'm equally at home on either platform if you have questions :)

I am using Mandrake 9.1 + KDE + FlightGear moderately successfully, i.e. I can
compile plib, SimGear and FlightGear from cvs and run it. Flying skills are
another question best left aside. [1]
I have an Athlon 1.4GHz CPU, and a GeForce4 FX5600 video card. With nvidia
graphics one has to use NVidia's binary (closed source) drivers, which should
be OK on relatively modern cards. In short, Mandrake Linux is certainly a
good platform for FlightGear.
You must upgrade the automake that comes with Mandrake to build from cvs: see
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.games.flightgear.general/4901 for a message
from the FG Users list on this topic.
If you have difficulties, let me know. If your hardware resembles mine, I've
probably been there too.
Regards
Jonathan

[1] I'm not a programmer, either, though I am an IS professional. And I don't
have a pilot's licence. I'll get my coat... :¬)
