Fixed (sort of) in Subversion repository.

The problem here is _only_ with you ./configure with --enbale-cairo;
clipping with Cairo is absolutely utterly stuffed ATPIT (and will probably
remain this way for a the next 7 or 8 months at least). I won't fix the
Cairo issue and I'll still close this STR but there are multiple others
regarding clipping and Cairo, so never fear!

There was another problem, however, where UTF8 bytes would compare equal,
and thus cause the text display to update beyond the first character (even
though a UTF8 char could potentially be multibyte). This is now fixed.
