The box really is a collage of art novelties--it has film, performance,
sculpture, dice, concepts & humor. It has an abstract painting, prints
(as in printmaking & fingerprints), matches, tape, and, can I call it an
'odalisque' on the rocks? Maybe a Duchampian Odalisque? Today I
discovered the paper pyramid and the transportable cardboard picture
frame for looking out at the world.

I hate to mention one work over another because I discover something new
each time I look at it, and I quite like the variety of objects & forms.

When I opened it one of the first I noticed was Josh Ronsen's 'tape
piece'. It is what it says--a piece of tape, very nice--I like it. And
I have a card with the number '97' on one side, and '44' on the other.
I like that too.

My contribution was 'Fluxus Art Chat'. My first thought for the box was
to prepare a tiny book comprised of fluxlist e-mail discussions about
making the box. There were far too many of those, though--I couldn't
keep up with them. I then tried to make 'talking lips', by attaching
cut-out mouths from lipstick ads to clothes pins so they would 'talk'.

But, gee, that didn't work out either. I was staring at a picture of
George Maciunas in the Fluxus Codex & wondering what he'd say about
these projects when I thought I'd try to make a 'talking head'. I ended
up I think with 7 heads (Alison Knowles, Ay-O, Yoko Ono mask, Dick
Higgins, LaMonte Young, Jackson MacLow, George Maciunas).

They really work & I hope everyone who got one tries it out. I
hestitated to open some of the sealed packages in the box because they
look so neat, but I think I'll try everything as I work my way through
it. And I mentioned off-list to Sol that I really like his label--I'd
like to mention it again here. The label reminded me of labels on
'novelty' items.

I'd be interested to hear more about the original Fluxus boxes. It
seems that they were mostly done by an individual, and not by a group.
Is that right?
