Fedora 32 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-05-25. Fedora 32 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

[Bug 1753295] Pango has dropped support for non-Opentype bitmap fonts

2021-04-29 Thread bugzilla
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1753295

--- Comment #116 from Fedora Program Management
 ---
This message is a reminder that Fedora 32 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 32 on 2021-05-25.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with
a
Fedora 'version' of '32'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 32 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

So for fonttools the resolution NEXTRELEASE would not be correct anyway.

Changing component to xorg-x11-font-utils, to allow tracking packaging fixed
utility which will support creating OpenType Bitmap fonts.

Was not it already communicated before that fonttools cannot convert bitmap
font? See https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pango/-/issues/386#note_567356 This
discussion involved upstream fonttools developers as well so why insist for
fonttools component?

I don't see any of related people even asking xorg-x11-font-utils package
owners about the required fix for fonttosfnt binary.

I'm sorry but was there a build of xorg-x11-font-utils which has fonttosfnt
with https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/fonttosfnt/-/merge_requests/7
applied, so that font maintainers have a known and supported way of actually
shipping their bitmap fonts with reasonable metrics information? What is the
alternative way of doing it with utilities from fonttools?

I think we can close this bug. If there are still any issues that need to be
fixed then open bug against respective component. This bug is still pointing
'fonttools' component and we did not fix anything in fonttools package.

2020-09-09 Thread bugzilla

That helped.

I've now built fonttosfnt-x 1.1.0 with the
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/fonttosfnt/-/merge_requests/7 applied
into https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/adelton/fedora-fixes/ and I've
rebuilt bitmap-fonts with the change from
https://src.fedoraproject.org/fork/pwu/rpms/bitmap-fonts/commits/fonttosfnt
using that fonttosfnt-x and now LucidaTypewriter Sans 9 from
bitmap-lucida-typewriter-opentype-fonts-0.3-35.ad1.fc32.noarch in
xfce4-terminal under pango-1.44.7-2.fc32.x86_64 is displayed exactly like the
old bitmap font under pango-1.43.0-4.fc30.x86_64.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks. The output is the same as with the PCF approach, more vertical space.

During the build I've noticed

LucidaTypewriter-Sans.otb
fonttosfnt -b -c -g 2 -m 2 -o LucidaTypewriter-Sans.otb lutRS08.bdf lutRS10.bdf
lutRS12.bdf lutRS14.bdf lutRS18.bdf lutRS19.bdf lutRS24.bdf
You are requesting to put more than one font into a single OpenType font.
This is not recommended. The global font metrics will not match every font
face.
Rather create an OpenType font collection

Is creating a collection something easily doable?

With fonttosfnt patched with
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/fonttosfnt/-/merge_requests/7,
LucidaTypewriter built from bitmap-fonts-0.3-33.fc32.src.rpm actually has
bigger linespacing than the small excessive linespace with stock
bitmap-lucida-typewriter-opentype-fonts-0.3-33.fc32.
