[Foundation-l] just wondering, are we going to take down en.wikipedia.org?

2011-10-27 Thread Domas Mituzas
Hi!

we recently did some practice on italian wikipedia, are we going to protest IP
legislation in US by taking down English Wikipedia?

Unlike in Italian case, it is likely that US government would do that
instead of us. So, there is no need to worry.

I think that's taking too many steps at once. We should first check what
exactly is being proposed and how this would influence the projects, the
Foundation and maybe other related groups. Only when we find that indeed
there is a large negative impact either on the projects themselves or on the
Foundation's possibilities of hosting and supporting them, are drastic
methods of protest a good idea. And only at that point it could be decided
that turning some site on black would be the best definition of 'drastic
method' for the case.

Obvious sarcasm is obvious. But people think you are serious.

I'm not sure who is more dangerous, stupid politicians speaking about
closing sites or stupid wikipedians closing Wikipedia sites when politicians
speak about closing sites.

Damn.

Exactly so.

[Foundation-l] Article Feedback Tool office hours

2011-10-27 Thread Oliver Keyes
Hey guys

So, Office Hours for the AFT is now over; thanks to all who attended. The
logs can be found at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours/Office_hours_2011-10-27 for
those who missed it - we're talking about trying to hold a second session at
a more North America-friendly time. Is that something that interests anyone?
Meanwhile, the plans for the new AFT version can be found at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:AFT5 - if you have any opinions, just
drop a note on the talkpage. All comments and perspectives are welcome :).

Thanks

[Foundation-l] Feedback Dashboard launched today

2011-10-27 Thread Howie Fung
Hey Everyone,

I wanted to let everyone know that earlier today, we launched the Feedback
Dashboard:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:FeedbackDashboard

This dashboard is a running list of comments that new editors submitted via
Moodbar (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MoodBar). The idea behind this
feature is to capture, in a lightweight fashion, the editing experience of
folks that are just starting out. After either attempting or submitting an
edit, new editors get an invitation in the upper left hand corner inviting
them to provide feedback on their editing experience. The Feedback
Dashboard provides a feed of these comments.

This feature is still experimental, so please excuse any wonkiness and let
us know of any bugs you find.

Take a look to find out what makes new editors Happy, Sad, or Confused!
Also, if you'd like to either comment on the feature or participate in its
further development, please leave a message here [1] or here [2].

Howie

About 90% of everything that comes out of Domas's mouth is sarcasm. So
if you don't know whether he's being sarcastic about something, you
can assume that he is and get it right 90% of the time.

Domas probably had the same reaction to the Italian Wikipedia protest
as I did. We both spend a lot of time making sure Wikipedia is always
up and available for people to read, so it's painful to see a small
proportion of a wiki's users decide to take a whole wiki offline for
everyone.
