REMINDER: GNOME Foundation Members Meeting

2007-07-16 Thread Glynn Foster
Hey all,

Just a reminder that the GNOME Foundation Members meeting will be on at 5pm
Monday 16th July (TODAY!).

The board is going to present a year in review of what we've currently done, and
what plans we have for the future. Soon after, we'll be opening it up for
discussion on where we need to be as an organization and how we can help grow
the project (or any other questions that come up).

We'd love everyone at GUADEC to attend, regardless of whether you are or not a
current GNOME Foundation member.

Resigning from the board

2007-07-16 Thread Dave Neary

Hi all,

As some of you have noticed, I'm not at GUADEC this year. The reason is
a happy one - Anne is going to be giving birth sometime over the next
couple of weeks (I'll keep ye posted).

The combination of the arrival of a third child, and a change in role at
work over the past few weeks, have meant that I've reevaluated the
committment I can make to the board of the foundation. In all honesty, I
can't guarantee that I will be able to do justice to my position as
board member for the second half of the year, a period when the board is
usually more effective than during the first part.

So I prefer to leave my place to someone with more energy ideas, and
to leave the board at a time when I am still relatively happy with how
I've done. I hereby resign my seat on the board.

I have had a great two and a half years on the board, and I'd like to
thank everyone with whom I've served - Owen Taylor, Luis Villa, Jody
Goldberg, Daniel Veillard, Jonathan Blandford, Federico Mena-Quintero,
Tim Ney, Miguel de Icaza, Murray Cumming, Christian Schaller, Jeff
Waugh, Anne Oestergaard, Vincent Untz, Quim Gil, Glynn Foster, Behdad
Esfahbod. Thanks also to everyone who has voted for me through the last
3 elections.

I'd like to wish all the best to the board for the rest of the year, and
good luck to the person who replaces me.

Cheers,
Dave.

No, according to the GNOME Foundation by-laws, the Board may appoint a new
director in the case of a vacancy (which we did last year under the same
circumstances).

This is standard practice in the not-for-profit world (lest you be
worried that this is somehow unusual or improper)

Re: Regarding OOXML and Microsoft patents

In this case I suspect that the length of the standard is largely a

complex and wart-filled proprietary binary formats. I haven't read
the specs to see how detailed and precise they are, though. Neither
am I saying I think it's a good idea for anyone (except Microsoft) for
people to use XML in this way, as little more than a memory dump of
a proprietary format.

Of course, the length doesn't make the spec easy to implement -- did
Microsoft include any sort of test suite, and any clear conformance
statements?
