I appreciate the mention of DocFrame, but it's not a DocBook

Which is better, FM with DocBook or DITA

2007-06-08 Thread Gordon McLean
Depends on your needs Diane. And I wouldn't worry about FM 'playing' with
either, getting the right standard is more important than the tool and FM is
capable of round-trip to either standard.

I'm assuming you will be storing the content as XML, pulling it from a CMS
(or CCMS as I heard recently) and using the standard to help control the
input (using FM as the editor). If not then the following may still be of
use but not a direct answer.

You can specialise (customise) either to meet your specific needs. In a
nutshell, and I'm not expert but from what I've read etc etc, DocBook looks
very comprehensive and may be overkill for some... DITA has fewer elements
and was created specifically to support topic/task based documentation.

Personally I've been looking at DITA I think DocBook is overkill for our
needs but you'd need to do some more digging into each standard first. Get
your requirements together (from EVERYONE who will be contributing content)
and then assess each standard.

I know that the DITA guys and gals have a working committee in the process
of looking at interoperability but it's early days for that (the premise
being that you should be able to use, for example, a DITA topic within a
DocBook manual).

I'm sure there will be whitepapers out there on this, or at the very least
some well informed opinions from people more knowledgeable in this area than
I, so fire up Google.

Subject: Which is better, FM with DocBook or DITA

Hi everyone,

You might remember that a few weeks ago I asked about FM vs AT. I got some
REALLY good information which is now all in a huge spreadsheet that I will
make available when it is complete. Many thanks to all of you who provided
all that great information.

Now I have another question, almost as complicated. Structured FM can work
with both OASIS XML standards: DocBook and DITA. But which one is the
better standard to use? Or does it make any difference? One of our
divisions in Japan has decided on AT with Docbook 4.2 because it is what one
of our OEM customers use. They want us to do the same. We would rather use
FM, but are undecided on which standard to use.

According to Adobe,

FM 7.2 supports DocBood 4.1 and xDocBook 4.1.2. Does anyone know if it
supports later versions such as 4.2? I found info on the OASIS website that
says the latest verion they support is 4.4, and other information that says
there is a least a verion 5.0 of DocBook.

Thanks everybody!

OT (kinda') - Funky problem with ePublisher Pro and MS Word

2007-06-08 Thread Van Boening, Tammy
Although this addresses a Word issue, it's because of ePublisher Pro, so
I am hoping those of you who also work with ePublisher Pro may know
something about this:

I recently installed ePublisher Version 9.2 on my PC (Windows XP with
SP2 and Office 2003) for use with Framemaker (but of course, ePublisher
Pro now also works with MS Word). It was a straightforward install
without any issues - I simply accepted the standard installation and
clicked Next all the way through the install wizard and then waited for
the installation to complete. When I open Framemaker documents, I have
no issue; however, when I open a Word document, it's a crap shoot.
Sometimes, a Word document will open just fine and I have a single
instance of the WebWorks toolbar appear; however, for other documents,
they take like 3 to 5 minutes to open, I get a wonderful strobe light
effect, and I get no less than 25 instances (no joke, I have counted) of
the WebWorks toolbar opening. Argh! I have to wait for all these
instances to open before I can get to the Word doc., and as a result of
these WebWorks publisher toolbars, my standard toolbars are
collapsed/compressed or not visible at all. I have to waste like the
next five minutes closing all but once instance of the WebWorks toolbar.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why on earth this happens with
some Word documents, and not others, and quite frankly, why it happens
at all. I have never had toolbar issues with Word documents until AFTER
I installed ePublisher Pro, and I am getting quite frustrated. Like I
said, it was a standard install, so whatever is causing this is "behind
the scenes" and well out of my control.

Has anyone seen this really, really weird problem with Word before (OK,
I know weird problems and Word go hand in hand, but I am classifying
this as a really, really weird problem!) and knows what to about it? Any
and all advice/input/help is sincerely appreciated.

TIA,

TVB

PDF TouchUp Error

2007-06-08 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi all,
I'm in possession of a PDF (created by someone else) that needs to be
edited. When I try to touch up the text, I get the following error
message:

"All or part of the selection has no available system font. You cannot
add or delete text using the currently selected font."

Is this truly a font issue or could it be a permission issue? What does
"no available system font" mean?

Thanks,

It means you don't have that font installed on your computer. Just the same
as in Frame, you need to have the font installed on your computer in order
to be able to use it.

And beyond that, it means that they didn't embed fonts, so reproducing
it accurately may be a little dicey unless it's printed from a system
that has all the required fonts.
