problem install framemaker 8 trial version

2007-09-07 Thread d.mossfri...@comcast.net
I ran into the same problem (on two different computers) with the GoLive 9
trial. I have also noted the same problem recently with a couple other Adobe
applications. I suspect (yet cannot prove) the problem happens with Adobe's new
serial number dialog box where you select to add a serial number or trial.

Best,

 Denise L. Moss-Fritch

Using FrameScript to change footer text

2007-09-07 Thread Fred Ridder
One aspect of well-designed templates is that the headers and
footers should be identical (or I should say identically constructed,
meaning built from the same system variables even if those
variables will have different values in different chapters) across
all or most of the files in a book. If that is the case, you only
need to update the master pages in *one* file per book, and
can then import that formatting (identified as Page Layouts in
the Import Formats dialog) into all the other similar files in the
book in a single operation. The ability to import various types
of formatting from one file into a whole book's worth of files
has always been one of FrameMaker's biggest strengths..

If the headers and footers are constructed differently from
file to file, I think you're going to be stuck doing them manually
because a script will only work properly if it is dealing with
similar constructions.

That's an unfortunate limitation; adding callouts or other
Frame vector elements to graphics is very common. So is using
two or more images as a montage in a single frame. Mif2Go
handles both of those situations just fine, with *no* manual
intervention. You shouldn't have to repeat the work you did
in Frame in Photoshop and Illustrator! Yikes!

If you run into this deficiency again, you can use the free
demo version of Mif2Go to generate the composite graphics,
even if you then use them in ePP. ;-) Just run the demo to
produce plain HTML; don't bother with any .ini settings, the
defaults will work out of the box. Look at the generated
HTML pages to find the graphic, then get its name from the
browser (right-click on image, Properties). Use that graphic
in ePP. Takes maybe five minutes start to finish.

The demo is available at:

Of course, you could save even more time and money by
using Mif2Go for the whole job. It costs only about
1/5 of what ePP is these days... and does much more.

problem install framemaker 8 trial version

2007-09-07 Thread Peter Gold
I can't speak definitively to the problem with running in trial mode.

Regarding what's compatible - you can keep multiple _different_
releases of FM installed without conflicts. For example, FM 4, 5,
5.56, 6.x, and 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, and 8.0, are sufficiently different to
work independently. Each must be installed in its own directory, not
over existing installations, not even one with a very similar release
number (like 7.0 and 7.1.) You are bound by the license agreements'
requirements regarding discontinuing the use of releases you've
upgraded. Over the years, some of these requirements have changed.

In this light, the support tech may have given you bogus information.
To my knowledge, it's not been necessary to uninstall a existing
release to install a new and different one. However, if the technician
meant "try uninstalling your current release before installing the
trial, then install your old release again," that's perhaps a possible
solution. Perhaps someone on this list has experience with this
strategy and can comment.

I'd suggest contacting tech support again, and insist on talking with
a supervisor, to determine exactly how to proceed. Insist on official
Adobe-verified advice for a solution, not "it should work," or "I
think so." If the supervisor can't answer for certain, insist on
speaking with the highest-level manager.

You may want to remind your contacts that it's in Adobe's best
interest to make the trial experience as smooth as possible.

I'm not sure what the possible consequences might be of uninstalling
the earlier 7.x release before installing the 8.0 trial, and
reinstalling the 7.x. Uninstalling leaves some user files in the
installation tree which shouldn't be problematic when reinstalling 7.x
to the same location.

However, installing 8.0 may prompt you to choose whether to install
Acrobat, and warn that it will uninstall existing Acrobat. If and when
you uninstall the trial, you may need to straighten out the Acrobat
installation. Be sure to ask the supervisor about effects on Acrobat
if you try uninstalling 7 before installing the 8 trial.

Fixed my Problem

2007-09-07 Thread Flato, Gillian
I finally fixed my problem. I can build help files again! (whew! I was
starting to sweat bullets)

Here is what I did:

1. Reinstalled ePub (don't know if that helped but what the hell)

2. Fixed the corrupt graphics (ePub cannot manage images grouped
together with Frame callouts. I created the graphics with callouts in
Illustrator and saved as a *.png file. Additionally, ePub can't handle
multiple images in an anchored Frame. I took the three images in an
anchored Frame and combined them into one graphic in Photoshop.)

3. I changed the graphic settings in the Style Designer as follows:

By Reference Graphics: Enabled (with Frame 7 I had this as Disabled)
By Reference Graphics use document dimensions: Disabled

It sounds like you have inadvertently enabled Snap (on the Graphics
menu), which causes objects to align with the Grid (which you have
likely not made visible from the View > Options menu).

I have seen something similar recently with FrameMaker 7.2p158. My keyboard
will suddenly become remapped. I have to quit and restart FrameMaker and all
is well. I am still not sure what is triggering it.

Re: problem install framemaker 8 trial version

2007-09-07 Thread Scott Prentice

You definitely don't need to uninstall FM7 to install the FM8 trial.

In the dialog that asks for the serial number *should* be an option to
choose the "30 Day Trial" which doesn't need a serial number. It's right
below the serial number fields .. run it again and see if you missed it.

really need to remove Frame 7 to evaluate Frame 8?

MSWin XP
Frame 7.22.158
mem - 1g

Beginning yesterday in the afternoon when an object was selected for
movement, its trajectory to the intended position was stuttered/bounced in
about 6pt increments.

The objects involves are: Frame created "rules and shapes", Table cell
boundaries, and Graphic (.tif or .eps) boundaries.

I know not what I have done to cause this affliction.

I have searched for all (sys & app) *.ini files and find "fmtoolbr.ini -
9/6/07 @ 5:13" to be the only .ini file to be "Modified" since 2/5/07.

So, . . . I opened the fmtoolbr.ini in Frame as text, But, I know "nada"
about what I see there or even if I'm looking in the correct place.

As my customers fail to accept "approximately correct" this seems to be a
serious problem.

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge of a solution.

I ran into the same problem (on two different computers) with the GoLive 9
trial. I have also noted the same problem recently with a couple other Adobe
applications. I suspect (yet cannot prove) the problem happens with Adobe's new
serial number dialog box where you select to add a serial number or trial.

Unfortunately, no patches or solutions (as far as I know).

A limited workaround is to change the marker type of all cross-reference
markers (in tables or throughout), leaving the marker text unchanged (for
example, change the marker type to a custom type).

After the table is sorted, change the marker type back to Cross-reference.

This can be automated with FrameScript, or by processing MIF files.

You're looking in the wrong place -- "fmtoolbr" means "FM tool bar."

It sounds like you're used to working with snap off, and you've
inadvertently turned it on. The command is Graphics > Snap, and a check
mark appears next to it when it's enabled. Snap causes graphics objects
(including frames) to snap to the grid.

Personally, I consider snap essential if "approximately correct" won't
do, because positioning things by "eyeballing" them is not as precise as
aligning them to the grid. Of course, you have to define your grid
spacing to something that works for you. Do that with View > Options.

Sounds like you have the Graphic Snap feature enabled. Look on the

It sounds like you have inadvertently enabled Snap (on the Graphics
