Re: OT: Wireless headset

2011-01-31 Thread Ashish Gupta
Hi Rick,

My experience says:

   - Bluetooth is only one of the options. Don't let it be a filter to being
with. Infrared and RH frequency can be great too depending on your needs.
  - If you plan to use these across various rooms in the house and in
the immediate neighborhood, then RH ones. They work in the line
of sight. If
you have other appliances working on RH frequencies then don't go for the
RHF ones. They get interference. RHF-operated ones are cheaper too.
  - If you are plan to use it with your cell phone as well, then
  Bluetooth it is.
   - If you want to do recording in noisy places, then it'd be better to
   have bidirectional microphones.
   - They come with the base unit which attaches to the PC. It better attach
using a USB connector than a 3.5 mm copper jack.
   - IMHO, don't go for a headphone (without mic); buy a headset (with mic).
It is a 2-in-1 device for almost the same price.
   - Don't go for a device offering anymore than 2 channel outputs. Having
an in-built woofer would be good if you listen to music, but anything more
(like, say 5 channel output!) is only for gaming and listening to high-end
music (if your audio content is itself 5.1 to being with).
   - If you want to use them with mobile phone, while driving, and while
conversing too, then consider monaural ones. Else stick to binaurals.
   - If you plan to use them with your mobile, first check the compatibility
   (for differences based on versions).
   - You might want to make sure they run on standard AAA re-chargeable
batteries. In my experience the proprietary batteries are a nuisance.
   - I do not know if they are available in the market, but I'd want a pair
that runs on ONE single AAA battery. I possess one which run on 2 AAA
batteries and their weight seems to double after every hour of wearing them!
   :-)

If I may, the best way for market research would be to decide on budget (a
range) and make a priority list of 2 or 3 specs you are looking for, based
on your needs. One size will never fit all. You, for sure, know the best.

Ashish

 Hello Framers,

Please forgive the off-topic question, but I always get good advice from
this list. I like to listen to audio on my computer while I work.
 Currently,
I use ear buds plugged into my monitor's speaker port. I would like to go
wireless, but am not sure exactly what I need. I assume that I need a
Bluetooth headset and some kind of USB devise that will stream the
computer's audio to the headset. Any advice or recommendations would be
 appreciated. Thank you very much.

Hi Cathy,
I did a quick test, and I see what you mean. FM's native document compare
function in 9.0 is not very robust when it comes to structural changes in
tables.
Possible solution:
If you save your docs as PDFs, you can compare those side-by-side in Beyond
Compare http://www.scootersoftware.com/download.php as rendered text files.
Beyond Compare will show you text and column changes but not formating changes.

For that you can use Acrobat. Acrobat 9's compare feature will show formatting
changes, but the column and text changes are hard, at least for my eye, to
intuitively grasp.

A two-phase comparison then, should enable you to visually capture the
differences:
1. PDF comaprisons in Beyond Compare for text, cell, and column changes.
2. PDF comparisons in Acrobat for formatting.

Alternatively, if you don't need to *see* the changes, you can *read* them by
saving the the files as XML, and then doing a side-by-side comparison in Beyond
Compare. In my tests, that worked pretty well.

Well, Fred has a point, but as far as I know, all legacy versions of
Frame can open a MIF file and FM 10 can back save in several earlier
version MIF formats. If there are functions or information in it that
are newer than the opening version, that data is ignored (I don't know
if it is discarded or preserved though).

But if you have some real antique FM files, download the eval and have it it

Question about some FM plugins

2011-01-31 Thread Spectrum Writing
All,

I have also sent a message directly to Steve at Silicon Prairie, but I am
hoping that I can also get an answer from this list. I must set up a
client's environment with FM9.0 on a Win7 64-bit machine. The client wants
their FM installation to have all the bells and whistles that mine has.
This means that I must install the following Silicon Prairie plugins -
AutoText, Master Page Tools, Paragraph Tools, Character Tools, and Table
Tools. I am set up as an Administrator on the client's laptop on which I am
setting up this environment. I have downloaded and installed these plugins
many times before w/out issue, but for the life of me, this time, I having
some difficulty.

For example, I downloaded the Master Pages Tools for FM9.x and I placed the
MPTools.dll in the plugins directory for FM and the MasterPage.fm document
in the fminit directory for FM9 as you are supposed to do. I did not have FM
open at the time, but when I opened FM, I did not see the Tools menu option
in the FM main menu as expected. I closed FM and reopened and still no luck.
So, I opened the MasterPage.fm document and made an entry and when I tried
to save the file, I got the message that the file could not be locked
because I did not have Write permission, but I am set up as an
Administrator. I closed FM and opened it by right-clicking on the desktop
icon and selecting Run as Administrator and after FM opened, I opened the
MasterPage.fm file, made an entry in the file and was able to save it. OK,
good, but the Tools menu option still is not displayed on the FM main menu.
I am expecting to see File Edit Format View Special Graphics Table Adobe
RoboHelp AutoText Tools Webworks Window Help and instead, I am seeing File
Edit Format View Special Graphics Table Adobe RoboHelp Webworks Window Help.
I don't have the options for Auto Text and Tools and I have properly placed
the dlls for the tools as well as the corresponding .fm files. I have
confirmed that under View Menus that Complete is selected.

Has anyone run into this issue before and if so, how did you resolve it?

TIA,

Re: Question about some FM plugins

2011-01-31 Thread Mike Wickham
I had the same or a similar problem. If I remember right, there were
notices popping up that the programs were unregistered, but no menus to
allow me to register them. I did something-- I forget what (deleting the
*.fm files for the SP plugins in fminit?)-- that made the menus return,
but entering the registration data would not stick and would be lost
when I closed FrameMaker.

If I recall correctly, the fix was to find the various *.fm files
belonging to the SP plugins in the fminit folder: AutoText.fm,
CHARREG.fm, etc. Right-click on each one and choose File Properties
Security Tab, and then set permissions for Users to allow everything. As
I recall, they had read-only permissions set that were the cause of the
problem.

FM 10 Backward Compatibility

2011-01-31 Thread Fred Ridder

FM10 should be able to open *any* .fm file, regardless of vintage.
"Back-saving" from FM10 in a form that can be opened by older versions of
FrameMaker is another matter, though...

thin black line on some images

2011-01-31 Thread Bethany Lee
I have seen this thread somewhere and searched the archives but couldn't find
it:
I am using FM 9 (all patches installed), and when I print to PDF, some images
appear with a thin black line on the right side. I had this once before, and
fixed it (so I know there's a simple solution), but my IT guy did something to
my computer and now they are back. Does anybody remember the solution to this?

FM 10 Backward Compatibility

2011-01-31 Thread Art Campbell

The client wants
their FM installation to have all the "bells and whistles" that mine has.

I closed FM and opened it by right-clicking on the desktop
icon and selecting "Run as Administrator" and after FM opened, I opened the
MasterPage.fm file, made an entry in the file and was able to save it. OK,
good, but the Tools menu option still is not displayed on the FM main menu.
I have
confirmed that under View > Menus that Complete is selected.

Has anyone run into this issue before and if so, how did you resolve it?

TIA,

TVB

Need Help to open the FM files

I tried to open your file but received the same error message; even the
"heroic open command" (Esc o H with a new document open) does not
succeed. I would say the file is corrupted and likely unrecoverable.

Question about some FM plugins

2011-01-31 Thread Spectrum Writing
Ok, got it working. I had to set some properties for Framemaker to Run as
Administrator at all times whenever I opened the application. I then deleted
the dlls and .fm pages and re-added, opened FM and voila, the Tools menu now
appears.

Question about some FM plugins

Right-click on each one and choose File Properties>
Security Tab, and then set permissions for Users to allow everything. As
I recall, they had read-only permissions set that were the cause of the
problem.
