[Alt]-arrow key to move an object (or kern text) by 1 pt (at 100% zoom)

[Alt]-*[Shift]*-arrow key to move an object (or kern text) by 6 pt (at 100%

trouble installing TCS3 with CS5 DP

2011-03-11 Thread John Sgammato
In the end it was a complete disaster. Adobe Support took over my
machine to do some tricks, and when they were done I could no longer
enable my VPN connection or my virus protection. I brought the computer
to IT, who rebuilt it and installed everything. Later I got a call from
Adobe asking to see the install logs - I said I did that last week (you
knucklehead). The guy I talked to said he was the top tier of Adobe
support, and a lower-level guy had done some things that he should not
have done at his level. I replied I don't need you anymore and I hope I
never do again.

So there's a cautionary tale. Like they say: "Experience is what you get
when you didn't get what you wanted."

Hi John,

I'm listening, but can't help as I'm running a trial TCS3 on top of
Design Standard CS4 (on XP Pro SP3). Only problem I've had so far is
that Frame 10 crashes for reasons I don't understand. These crashes
seem to relate to corrupted files, but haven't happened to a pattern as
yet. That and the issue with Acrobat X not recognising installed fonts.

I saw no problems when I installed the TCS3 trial from CD on top of DS4.

I have had Adobse CS5 Design Premium for some time, and am now adding
TCS3. FrameMaker 10 is an upgrade from FM9, RoboHelp and Captivate are
all-new to this system, and I don't know what the relationship is with
TCS3's Acrobat X and CS5's Acrobat 9, or with TCS3's Photoshop and CS5's
Photoshop.
It's not working. FM10 and RH9 always fail to install, but everything
else seems to install OK.
I get some failure messages relating to AdobeHelp and other things that
seem to be under the covers, and a number that refer to things that
pre-exist without upgrade paths to the new versions, but no obvious
conflicts with the main products - nonetheless it is those that fail to
install.
Adobe Support has escalated this, but is still flailing about wildly
three days later.
Has anyone else had similar experiences with CS5 and TCS3?

Image rendering onscreen

2011-03-11 Thread Tim Pann
Frame 9 unstr, WinXP

I have a short (less than 100 page) document with a handful of images.
They are TIFs ranging in size from one to 16 MB (300 dpi).

As I scroll through the document, Frame constantly halts at the images
and takes several seconds to render. I thought it would only happen once
the first time each image is displayed, but it seems to happen
repeatedly.

Is there a way that I can reduce the render time for my graphics?

I was thinking there was a way to have Frame display gray boxes (like
when it can't find them) but I am not finding that option.

Thank you,
Tim

Is there a way to move graphic frames & images in micro movements?

2011-03-11 Thread John Sgammato
Do I remember correctly that this feature used to be left-Alt only?
There was a reason not to use the right-Alt key, something related to
using languages other than English, but I don't remember what it was. I
wonder if that reason is no longer an issue, or if the right-Alt key
ability to nudge objects is a bug?

more Frame 10 Bug(s)/Odd behavior

2011-03-11 Thread John Sgammato
I get no crashes or stay-on-top behavior, but I do notice this strange
thing:
I used to be able to triple-click to select a paragraph, and then drag
down to get more whole paragraphs. Now the triple-click doesn't select
anything until I release the mouse button, so I can no longer get
multiple paragraphs in that convenient fashion.
I wonder if it was a casualty of the (also convenient) new drag-and-drop

Methods to redo book

2011-03-11 Thread Theresa de Valence
Okay,

I have copied my book to oldbook and copied book files to oldfiles. In
one file, I have cleaned up master paragraph and charater catalogs
(deleted excess) and fiddled with master pages to make them perfect.

Now I'm ready to create a new book, but there are hundreds of
cross-references going between book files.

In what order should I do things so that I do not have to redo all the
cross references?

Thanks,
Theresa

Re: Is there a way to move graphic frames & images in micro movements?

2011-03-11 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
I use Alt-Arrow frequently to nudge images. But as Shlomo says, you can also
use it for text. Just select the text and then nudge it whichever way you want.
Some typographic purists (not I) like to hang quotation marks that occur at the
beginning of a line out to the left, so that the first letter lines up with
those above and below. You can do this by selecting the whole line and using
Alt-left arrow to move it. It's one of those things that you can do right at
the end of your production process (but for which most of us never seem to have
the time).
