RE: URGENT: Need help in using fonts in FrameMaker

2011-03-21 Thread Ragnar Hanås
For Russian, you need to have the font Arial CYR installed. Times new Roman CYR
and a few other fonts are also available. I remember downloading these from
Microsoft. The Arial font is in a file called arial32.exe. I have published
several books in Russian with FM6 and FM7 without problems.

I also got the Simsun font to show Chinese characters nicely for FM6, but don´t
remember exactly how I did this. But I found an old e-mail saying:

You don't specify which version of FrameMaker you're using,

but, at least for versions 7.2 and earlier, you need to set

the operating system's language for non-Unicode programs to

an appropriate value to successfully use Far Eastern

 languages in dialog boxes.

 1. In Windows Control Panel, open the Regional and Language

 Options applet.

 2. In the Regional and Language Options dialog, display the

 Advanced tab.

 3. Select the language you want to work with, for example

 Chinese (PRC).

 4. Restart the computer.

Dear Keerthi,

As far as I know, FrameMaker 7 is not Unicode-enabled. Try turning on support
for each language in Control Panel of your OS, or try upgrading to FrameMaker 8
or higher.

Korean

The Korean fonts (Gulim, GulimChe, Dotum, and DotumChe (True type)) are

2011-03-21 Thread Art Campbell
As others mentioned, the solution is to upgrade your three-release-old FM 7
to a newer release that supports unicode fonts. FM 7 does not, but your
computer operating system and other applications do -- which is why the
fonts show up and can be used with unicode applications. But when you paste
them into Frame, the font data is meaningless -- hence the ? placeholders.

You might try downloading the current evaluation copy to see how it works,
provided your system will support it -- it does require more resources than
7 did.

Debar, recently I had the situation with a client that some graphic that was
working OK in FrameMaker 7 and earlier started to make problems in
FrameMaker 8+. The problem was a unusual encoding of some string inside that
EPS file, which came from FreeHand 3 or something else from the last
century. Resaving the EPS file in a current product version was the cure.

Maybe you can just re-save that TIF image using a current version of an
image editor and make sure to save it without LZW compression (this makes it
harder for apps to deal with the file) or anything that reads JPG (this
reduces quality). If the TIF is CMYK you could also try with converting to
RGB.

Try one thing at a time, so you/we know what was the source of the problem.

Good luck,

- Michael

Can Frame 10 save to Frame 8 files. A colleague in England is telling me he
can only save down to Frame 9. Can anyone confirm this?

I am using the beta version and it has a FrameMaker 8.0 save option. I am
