Index Sorting - Single Word
Hi Framers, I've studied the index sort order reference page but don't quite get how to make my index sort a single word followed by its comma and page number above the same word with another word following it. I want to keep letter-by-letter sorting. If Frame ignores commas, and the entry has nothing following the single word, shouldn't it appear before an entry that has any character after the word? I know I could make another index level; but keeping known phrases together, without twisting them around or breaking them up, is better for my readers. What I get: URSA enrollment appointment times, 28 enrollment, 22 What I want: URSA enrollment, 22 enrollment appointment times, 28 Any way to accomplish this? Application of multiple character tags in generated documents
Richard's advice is good, though another view on the same point might help make it theologically neutral, heh-heh... Think of it in terms of the PURPOSE of the char-tags you are applying---like Richard said, is it a product name, or a foreign word, or a menu command? Either way, your two-format tag could reflect that purpose in its name ("Emphasis" or "Definition"). By following this model (tags defined by purpose/content), you can then begin getting away from tags defined by format ("Bold" or "Italic" or "Red") and so the proliferation you feared begins to wash out. For every tag you create that's semantically smart but "roughly" one-off, you begin to see how you can eliminate a tag that's semantically blind and dumb, and which also has problems when used in combination with other such format-based but content-dumb tags. This type of change will also help in case you ever go to a structured environment. Which of course you long to do. Is there another solution? FM only "remembers" one char tag for a given text string. When you apply two char tags, you're creating an override. It's as if you'd applied the first char tag's settings as ad hoc formatting. Since I never apply multiple char tags, I wasn't aware that doing so would affect a TOC entry. I suggest you create a single char tag that correctly formats the text -- bold and red, italic and small caps, or whatever. For one thing, you'll avoid those overrides and thus have a purer soul. For another, it will make things much easier when, some day in the future, you have to change all instances of that word (a product name, maybe?) to, say, small caps and cerulean blue. :-) Richard G. Automatic Image Scaling
Hello Listers, ? Was wondering is there an automatic method to scale the images automatically while importing with a reference in Framemaker 7.0? Currently I import images with reference and set the dpi as required or use the ?scaling? option but I do not use ?text frame? to scale the graphics because the html output messes up. Maybe I do not know to use the option efficiently. This is a manual process so was wondering is there an automatic process or command that I might have overlooked? ? How do I keep Para catalog and Character catalog on top?
Drag the pod off to the side so it is a child window. You can also move the sub-pieces of the pods around to assemble a "custom" pod. How do I keep Para catalog and Character catalog on top?
Hi, all. I'm using FrameMaker 10 with Windows 7. I haven't messed with the workspace setup much, so I have the panel on the right of the workspace, and the "pods" for the Paragraph Tag catalog and Character tag catalog are at the top of the panel. For a while, when I opened either catalog, it would stay open and stay on top of my working file -- handy if I needed to apply a character tag to multiple instances. Now, as soon as I click a tag in the catalog, the catalog closes. How do I make it stay open? I have looked for likely commands and have not found any. Thanks. --Nancy
Framemaker 9 master pages - reversed pagination
I have a problem with the master pages in my document, for some reason the pagination seems to be back to front. I've got two master pages for each section of my document, one for left hand and one for right hand pages. The RH page always appears in the document as the first page. However, when I open my master pages the page that appears at the top is the LH page. The RH master page appears below. Not knowing how to fix this I've worked around it by setting the page numbering and other headers and footers to take account of the positioning. I can continue to fix this as it doesn't need to be dealt with too often but I'm wondering: a. How it came about? b. Is there a simple solution that could put it right that wouldn't involve a major restructuring of the document? Any thoughts? RE: Application of multiple character tags in generated
I agree with Richard Combs... You should create your special char tag to account for the effect you get by applying two more general char tags. But I'd go a step further. Don't name it Italic_Bold, or anything like that. In fact, you should never name your char tags (or any other tags) by the formatting effect. Stop and think of the *category* that formatting implies for the reader. Give that category a name, and use that as the name for your tag. If you can't come up with such a name, then maybe you should question the use of the formatting... Maybe it doesn't impart any information after all. The benefit of this approach is that you are implicitly declaring the structure of your document. If the day ever comes that you want to map your docs to explicit structure, you have the information already in place. And it just makes for better document engineering. As you have seen, even Maker can't automate its processes based on your combinations of formats. Suppose you want to write a script that manages precisely these bits of text... Well, using a single, well named format makes that much easier to accomplish. cud ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com.
