Bruce Foster, creator of many fine FrameMaker plugins, passed away
suddenly on Saturday, June 11, 2011. Although Mr Foster had been
diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September 2010, his death still came
earlier than was expected.

Mr Foster's wife Barbara Foster today responded to a recent e-mail I had
sent to Bruce requesting assistance with his Archive plugin, by letting
me know this news. Mrs Foster gave me permission to post here on
FrameUsers, and mentioned her intention of updating her late husband's
web page (http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster) with the news of his death.

Mr Foster's plugins for FrameMaker were Archive, BookInfo, ImpGraph,
MifSave, MifToFM, and RtfSave.

Good luck with the Illustrator forum.

Does anyone know of a list serv for Flash or Illustrator users that is
similar to this one for Framers? This list has been excellent for many

Cross reference issues

2011-06-14 Thread Theresa de Valence

Hello Framers,

I recently produced a manual for a multi-day conference (i.e. book). All
the sessions were located in sessions.fm. The format for the sessions was:

ID: 202
Analysis of Existing ABL Code (title)
Time:Sunday, June 5, 1:30 p.m.
Location: Salem
Presenter: Name, Title, Company, USA
Propellers: 2
Audience:	Developers and architects working with or designing program
modifications in ABL

In several places, I created files with cross reference links to
sessions.fm (agenda, mini-agenda, sessions by keyword, etc.) Thanks to
this list, I was able to produce a cross reference which was: "title
(ID: xxx) on page 57."

In retrospect, it would have been much better if I could have included
the speaker’s full name on the cross reference list, e.g. "title (ID:
xxx) by Dr. John Smith on page 57."

However, I see these problems:
* the speaker (presenter) is several lines away from the title
* every line starts with a "title" of what’s in the line
* the speaker (presenter) line has many other components in the line,
other than the speaker’s name.

* sometimes there were multiple presenters for one session

Could I put all the data in a separate table and make EVERYTHING a
cross-reference?

How would you recommend this be accomplished?

Thanks for your help,
Theresa

Hiding deletions in with Track Text Edits

2011-06-14 Thread Keith . Soltys
I'm starting to use the Track Text Edits feature in FrameMaker 10.

It's nice to have, but there's one thing that I find annoying. In Word, I
have my revision tracking set to use hidden text for deletions. I've
deleted the text from the document - I really don't want to see it
anymore.

Framemaker shows me deleted text as strikethrough with colour of my choice
(red). However, I can't hide it.

I know that FrameMaker uses conditions to show or hide the display of text
flagged with the Track Text Edits feature. Is there any way that I can set
things up so that the text marked with the deleted conditional is hidden?
If there is, I can't see it. Or do I need an add-in or a
FrameScript/ExtendScript?

FW: Retrospectively standardising the styles across my book

2011-06-14 Thread Smith, Andy
Hi

Thanks for all the advice on standardising the styles across my book. I now
realise that this is as much an issue of removing as many of the overrides as
possible. I think I’ll probably end up with a version of each style with and
without revision indicators which is going to make the list interesting.

Thanks also for the advice on plug-ins and applications that can help analysing
and amending the styles. I’ve not had a chance to investigate any of these yet
but I’ll give this a go when I get a chance.

Cheers

List serv for Flash users

2011-06-14 Thread Tim Pann
I don't know about Illustrator but I am a member of the kirupa listserv
(www.kirupa.com). That forum has been an amazing source of Flash and
Actionscript information for me and I cannot recommend it enough. Some
VERY smart and helpful people in there.

Good luck with the Illustrator forum.

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a list serv for Flash or Illustrator users that is
similar to this one for Framers? This list has been excellent for many
years. I'd like to think that there's another one out there for other
adobe applications.

Cross reference issues

2011-06-14 Thread Theresa de Valence
Hello Framers,

I recently produced a manual for a multi-day conference (i.e. book). All
the sessions were located in sessions.fm. The format for the sessions was:

ID: 202
Analysis of Existing ABL Code (title)
Time:Sunday, June 5, 1:30 p.m.
Location: Salem
Presenter: Name, Title, Company, USA
Propellers: 2
Audience: Developers and architects working with or designing program
modifications in ABL

In several places, I created files with cross reference links to
sessions.fm (agenda, mini-agenda, sessions by keyword, etc.) Thanks to
this list, I was able to produce a cross reference which was: "title
(ID: xxx) on page 57."

In retrospect, it would have been much better if I could have included
the speaker?s full name on the cross reference list, e.g. "title (ID:
xxx) by Dr. John Smith on page 57."

However, I see these problems:
* the speaker (presenter) is several lines away from the title
* every line starts with a "title" of what?s in the line
* the speaker (presenter) line has many other components in the line,
other than the speaker?s name.
* sometimes there were multiple presenters for one session

Could I put all the data in a separate table and make EVERYTHING a
cross-reference?

How would you recommend this be accomplished?

Thanks for your help,
Theresa

FW: Retrospectively standardising the styles across my book

2011-06-14 Thread Smith, Andy
Hi

Thanks for all the advice on standardising the styles across my book. I now
realise that this is as much an issue of removing as many of the overrides as
possible. I think I?ll probably end up with a version of each style with and
without revision indicators which is going to make the list interesting.

Thanks also for the advice on plug-ins and applications that can help analysing
and amending the styles. I?ve not had a chance to investigate any of these yet
but I?ll give this a go when I get a chance.

Cheers

RE: PowerPoint to Frame

2011-06-14 Thread Dov Isaacs
Assuming you are using a reasonably recent version of Microsoft Office, there
is another easy way of extracting the graphical elements from the original
document. Save the Office document using one of the new formats such as .DOCX
(for Word), .XLSX (for Excel), or .PPTX (for PowerPoint). Those "new" files are
actually Zip file archives, despite their file suffix. Open the file in your
favorite ZIP utility after renaming the suffix to .ZIP. Inside the .ZIP file,
you will find a subdirectory named media. Inside that media subdirectory, you
will find all those wonderful graphics assets as actual files, typically .JPG,
.TIF, .EPS, .WMF, .EMF, etc. Simply extract the file(s) from the ZIP archive
and you have what you need!

Good luck.

searching for any graphic. When Find locates a graphic, from the picture tool
bar, choose the Reset Graphic button (looks like a curved

arrow pointing at a picture), and then
click the graphic. If the graphic was larger or higher resolution than what is
presently displayed in the PPT/DOC file, it will enlarge to its original state
at import. This will look messy, but just bear with the process. When you
finish finding and resetting all the graphics, THEN do the save-as-html trick.
The resulting graphics file will populate with a bunch of image* files.

PowerPoint to Frame

2011-06-14 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Depending upon what your goals and needs are, another approach might be:

1. File -- Send To -- Microsoft Office Word. This gives you the text,
which you can then convert to plain text and format as needed with
styles in in your Frame document.
2. For graphics that need to be retained, I use a PowerPoint macro that
extracts them. I can't come up with the exact link in a hurry, but this
one may do the trick: http://skp.mvps.org/pptxp002.htm. If that does not
work for you, a more labor-intensive but definitely workable approach is
outlined here: http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00344.htm.
