FrameMaker 5 problems

2011-08-03 Thread Rob Shell

Dear Philip:
I would advise running the Windows XP virtual machine within Windows 7, not
just the compatibility mode. This is a download (free)
Moreover, I would use .tifs for referenced files. I am not sure whether jpgs
(so many new formats) will appear flawlessly in a Framemaker (so old).
Hope this helps. The Virtual machine is VERY stable. I use it every day.

RE: Frame 10 crashes and corruption

2011-08-03 Thread Martinek, Carla
Intex Xeon CPU

1.99 GHz, 3.00 GB of Ram

11GB free on C: drive
Files stored on network drive

In my case, I found that a book file corrupted. I've also had random crashes
and can't think of anything unusual I've done.

I'd done nothing unusual - I tried to open a file within the book, and it
crashed. Repeatedly. I went to a backup of the file, replaced the original
file, and then tried opening it from the book again, and it crashed. I realized
that my book file was corrupted, so I had to create a new one.

My coworker gets random crashes, often when trying to do something with
conditional text. I haven't had to work with conditional text as much, so I'm
not seeing it.

FM 10 also appears to be slow on my system - much more so than FM9. I've run
both FM9 and FM10 on this same system.

If I have a business case, I can request an upgrade to Win7.

Files are legacy files that were updated from FM9 files.
Some files have been MIF-washed in FM10, but not all.

Could you give more details on your environment? Could you give some
details on how much RAM, how much free space; are the FM files and
graphics local or on a server, etc and what exactly do you mean
by simple tasks?

Are the files and books you're working with FM 10 files, or legacy
files that you rolled forward from earlier releases? If they did come
from earlier releases, did you MIF-wash the files in 10?

For the record, on Win 7 32 and 64 systems with 4-8 G RAM, I don't
remember the last time I had a 10 crash.

 We're on WinXP SP3 with FM10.0.1.402.

And, on a related note, although I'm sure the developers considered it a
feature and not a bug that they introduced, I noticed that the sort order
for para styles has been messed with.         Again.           NOW FM10 is
sorting UPPERCASE letters prior to lowercase letters, whereas in FM9 it was
 lowercase then uppercase.

I and a few others fought this battle during the FM9 beta, and as a result
the SymbolSortingBeforeAlphaNumeric=On/Off parameter was added to the
maker.ini file so you could specify your preferred sort order (in FM8 and
older, symbols sorted before alpha/numeric - in FM9, they had them sorting
afterwards, unless you changed the parameter.)

Might not be a big issue to some people, but when you have shortcuts for the
F8 and F9 keys built into your style names, it plays havoc with what styles
are applied as compared to what you expect to be applied.

FrameMaker 10 and RoboHELP 9

2011-08-03 Thread Thomas Scalise
Esteemed colleagues,

Can anyone give me specific information about the supposed special relationship

RE: FrameMaker 10 and RoboHELP 9

2011-08-03 Thread John Sgammato
The full integration works only within TCS. If you have FM10 and you
have RH9, but not TCS, then you don't have the integration.

When you have the TCS integration, you can write in FM and then click
Publish to go directly to your RH outputs. The RH projects must be set
up ahead of time, of course, which is not a trivial step, but you would
have to do that in any event. So TCS3 is not a magic wand, but it is a
time saver and error-reducer.

Re: warnings, cautions, notes in sw documentation

2011-08-03 Thread David Farbey
Hi,

The general convention (which is based on an ISO standard whose number I
can't recall offhand) is that a Warning indicates the danger of death or
injury to people; a Caution indicates some lesser risk, such as a loss of
data; and a Note indicates some additional parenthetical or interesting
information.

Many companies don't see the need to apply any external standards to their
software documentation so, in the real world, that's the way we do it here
trumps all other standards, ISO or otherwise.

Indexable HTML Online Help

2011-08-03 Thread Paula Toth
HI Folks,

We have a project to get FrameMaker-based content topics out to the internet
as an online help system without a lot of customization effort. *BUT* we
want readers to be able to quickly and easily find specific topics that
answer questions by searching on the internet using Google or any other
search engine of their preference. This means that at a minimum.

1. The online help must be made up of straight HTML pages with no
frame sets or iframes of any kind, so that the online help pages can be
indexed by the popular search engines

2. Each topic must have its own url

3. There must be a way to:

a. Input and manage meta data tags

b. Control the meta data with a standardized taxonomy

4. Navigate the HTML pages

5. Link to related pages

I understand that requirement 1 and 2 means that I cannot user RoboHelp as
it uses framesets or iframes.

Is there a way to use WebWorks Publisher, FrameMaker Export to HTML feature,
or any other technique to address these requirements? If we want the content
to stay in FrameMaker, would we have to author in FrameMaker and use DITA
and the DITA OT to do this?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this matter.

RE: warnings, cautions, notes in sw documentation

2011-08-03 Thread Brian Emrich
The definition of Danger, Warning, Caution is defined by several
organizations. I typically follow the ANSI Z535 standard. ANSI 35 and 53
are referenced by OSHA. However, OSHA hasn't updated their references to
reflect the fact that ANSI combined these 2 standards into Z535 many years
ago.

Mathieu has the Danger and Warning definitions correct. They currently
discourage the use of Caution for equipment damage although it is still
acceptable. There's a new version being published next month that I
suspect will eliminate Caution as an acceptable term for equipment damage.

David also mentioned a mil spec that defines the terms and I know that ISO
also has standards possible injury, although they don't reference the
different levels of injury. With the attempted harmonization between ISO
and ANSI, this may be additional changes in the forthcoming update.

So you need to know the standards that your industry (and country)
reference and apply those standards to your documents. It is also good
practice (required?) that you state those definitions in your document.

The use of Warnings, Cautions, and Notes, specifically Warnings and
Cautions, are used differently in different technologies.

Here are some links that may hep you to decide which use best fits your

And MIL-STD-38784C states:
WARNINGS : Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure,
practice, condition, statement, etc, which, if not strictly observed,
could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health
hazards.

CAUTIONS: Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure,
practice, condition, statement, etc, which, if not strictly observed,
could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission
effectiveness.

NOTE: Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure,
condition, or statement.

Another thing that most people don't adhere to is that WARNINGS should
come before CAUTIONS, which should come before NOTES, when any two, or all
three, may apply to the following paragraph or section.

Hi hessiansx4,

Here is how we define them in our doc:

. Warning mention (+ pictogram): WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, can result in death or serious injury.

. Caution mention (+ picto): CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, can result in minor or moderate injury.

. Caution mention (without picto): CAUTION, used without the safety alert
symbol, indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided,
can result in equipment damage.

We talk about equipment damage because our soft is used for remote
equipment control.

Mathieu.

Spacebar Doesn't Always Create a Space

2011-08-03 Thread Michalak, Patricia S (APHIS)
I'm enjoying a spiffy, new FM 9 template created for my group. It's great
except for one quirk: The spacebar doesn't always create a space.

Across all paragraph tags, hitting the spacebar does not create a space in the
text at the cursor. If I place the cursor at the end of a word, and hit the
spacebar, I'm simply moved to the next word but a space has not been created.

If I place the cursor in the middle of a word and hit the spacebar, one space
is created (creating two words), but additional taps on the spacebar do nothing.

However, if I open a new FM document without importing the character tags from
the new template, my spacebar works as it should within the default paragraph
tags.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Internal Error 10014 when generating toc/index

2011-08-03 Thread Chittister, Robyn
Hello,

I'm using FrameMaker 10.0.1.402 on Windows 7. I have a very large book file -
30 files that total over 1000 pages. Track changes is enabled. All conditional
text is shown. All cross-references are resolved.

Sometimes, after generating the book, I will try to save it. I will then
receive the error:
Internal Error 10014, 6377587, 6370465, 6383969. FrameMaker has detected a
serious problem and must quit.
Please describe your recent actions and send this, along with the generated
file, to fmer...@adobe.commailto:fmer...@adobe.com.

Even if I then deleted the generated files, any time I would generate the book,
and then try to save it, I would receive the error.

At first, it happened when I added the TOC. Then, I was able to add and
generate the TOC, but when I tried to use our template, the book crashed. I
finally got that to work. Then, I added an index, and the book crashed when I
tried to save it. Then, I could add the index, but when I imported reference
and master pages, then generated the book and tried to save it, the book
crashed.

Today, I just opened the book, which had been fine last night, generated it,
tried to save it, and the book crashed.

I tried all sorts of things this evening, and sometimes the book crashed,
sometimes it didn't. I have a very long file that details what I tried.

I have it all working now, but I don't know why it works, and I don't know how
long it will work. I saved to MIF, but a working book and non-working book are
the same number of pages and the same number of characters.

I've seen the Adobe support forum topic on this issue, and it doesn't apply
here.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Does anyone have any ideas as to what
could be happening?

Thank you!

Immovable objects

2011-08-03 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello All

FrameMaker 9.0 p255 on Windows Vista.

Has anyone else had problems with pods or other objects that just won't move? I
was working yesterday in an unstructured document, with the Paragraph Designer
and the Paragraph Catalog open. Neither of these was docked - that is, they
were overlying the document, and I believe my document was maximized. Neither
of the dialogs would move. Dragging the top bar had no effect. Frustrating.

Is this a FM9 bug, or a feature? Is there perhaps some secret combination of
things that causes this (or more to the point, stops it)?

Roger

Re: warnings, cautions, notes in sw documentation

2011-08-03 Thread Simon North
All the answers I have seen so far seem to relate to HARDWARE.
In a SOFTWARE context, I think it's much more common to
use something like the following (this is my wording, so no official):

Warning: an irrecoverable action (formatting a disk), permanent data
loss or other
action that may result in an irreversible change to the system (such
as deleting a user
account) or damage to the hardware

Caution: an action that may seriously affect system performance (memory usage),
make take an extremely long time (resulting in inability to use the
system), may
seriously affect the system integrity (like removing password control
or disabling a
firewall) or loss or changes as listed for a warning that are reversible.

Note: an action that may result in inconvenience or confusion or,
positively, actions
that may make usage easier.

Any way to hide unconditional text?

2011-08-03 Thread Gay Alson
Hello again, Framers,

(FrameMaker 9.0p255, Windows 7 64-bit.)

Does the following make sense?

Let's say we have 100 text inset files for use in various chapters of
various books. Each TI file starts with this:

 Filename - Long system variable
Creation Date - Short system variable
Description Not a variable; a text description of the text inset
file.
Product Not a variable; an indication whether the text inset is
app-specific or global.

This information is conditionalized with the Metadata tag (which is used
only here and nowhere else in any of the TI files).

For reporting and versioning purposes, I want to copy and paste each
text inset file into a file called TextInsets.fm. In this file, I want
to show ONLY text bearing the Metadata tag. However, although I can hide
all of the other condition tags, I can't hide unconditional text. (And I
don't want to have to tag unconditional text with a condition called
Unconditional, just to be able to hide it...!)

Am I overlooking something obvious, or a better way to accomplish this?

Thanks for any suggestions,

~~Gay

FrameMaker 10 to PDF making Funky Bookmarks

2011-08-03 Thread Trish Castin
I have both portrait and landscape .fm files in my book.  I've seen the
postings about not using Save As PDF and also about making sure tagging is
turned on.  I've now discovered a new issue...

The Bookmarks in the PDF for the Landscape pages show up as a sublist of the
previous chapter.

Example:

Chapter 1: ABC (portrait chapter)
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Next Heading 1
Chapter 2: DEF (landscape chapter)
Chapter 3: GHI (protrait chapter)

They use the same Heading tags in the .fm files.

Anyone know how to fix this one?

Thanks in advance,
Trish

adding icon to FM para tag?

2011-08-03 Thread hessiansx4
We're using FM 8 (unstructured). One of the writers is working on a method to
automatically add an icon to Warnings and Notes using a Wingdings-like font. I
think there's another way to handle this but cannot remember the specifics. Any
suggestions for how to do this? btw, we currently use a single tag for both
Head
+ Body.  TIA

FrameMaker 5 problems

2011-08-03 Thread Rob Shell

Dear Philip:
I would advise running the Windows XP virtual machine within Windows 7, not
just the compatibility mode. This is a download (free)
Moreover, I would use .tifs for referenced files. I am not sure whether jpgs
(so many new formats) will appear flawlessly in a Framemaker (so old).
Hope this helps. The Virtual machine is VERY stable. I use it every day.
Rob

Frame 10 crashes and corruption

2011-08-03 Thread Martinek, Carla
Intex Xeon CPU
E5405 @ 2.00GHz

-Carla

Files are legacy files that were updated from FM9 files.
Some files have been MIF-washed in FM10, but not all.

Could you give more details on your environment? Could you give some
details on how much RAM, how much free space; are the FM files and
graphics local or on a server, etc and what exactly do you mean
by "simple tasks"?

Are the files and books you're working with FM 10 files, or legacy
files that you rolled forward from earlier releases? If they did come
from earlier releases, did you MIF-wash the files in 10?

For the record, on Win 7 32 and 64 systems with 4-8 G RAM, I don't
remember the last time I had a 10 crash.

FrameMaker 10 and RoboHELP 9

2011-08-03 Thread Thomas Scalise
Esteemed colleagues,

Can anyone give me specific information about the supposed special relationship
between Frame 10 and RoboHELP 9 that allow for single source authoring of a
help system? If it exists, must it occur within the TCS? I have a large update
project and it would be immensely easier with single source capability.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, info, etc.

FrameMaker 10 and RoboHELP 9

2011-08-03 Thread John Sgammato
The full integration works only within TCS. If you have FM10 and you
have RH9, but not TCS, then you don't have the integration.

When you have the TCS integration, you can write in FM and then click
Publish to go directly to your RH outputs. The RH projects must be set
up ahead of time, of course, which is not a trivial step, but you would
have to do that in any event. So TCS3 is not a magic wand, but it is a
time saver and error-reducer.

Spacebar Doesn't Always Create a Space

2011-08-03 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
You have Smart Spaces enabled ... this is how I want to use FrameMaker. This is
how I avoid extra spaces between words.

You can disable this setting and then add extra spaces ... but that is not
necessarily what you may want!

Also, to insert extra spaces when you still have Smart Spaces enabled, you can
insert special fixed-width spaces using key characters - try "ESC space m" for
example . This is described in the documentation ...

Subject: Spacebar Doesn't Always Create a Space
