Not a stupid question at all. In addition to Fred and other's responses, if you
want to import a single (or multiple) style across a whole book or books, try
this:

. Copy the document that contains the style you want to propagate. This will be
your 'seed' document for the new/revised style.

. Open the copy and delete all the styles except the one of interest ('Delete'
from the relevant palette).

. Import across the book(s) from that document, choosing character, paragraph
or table format import as appropriate (File Import Formats).

. Discard the copied document that acted as the 'seed' for the new style
definition.

If the style doesn't already exist in the book(s), it will be added to the
relevant catalog for each document in the book. If the style does exist in the
book(s), the imported style will overwrite the existing style of the same name.

Obviously you can do this as well for multiple styles.

If you find yourself doing this a lot, SiliconPrairie's very reasonably priced
plug-ins (Character Tools, PAragraph Tools and Table Tools) offer a command to
delete all styles of the relevant type that are not used in a document.

[These instructions are for pre-FrameMaker v 9 versions: I'm not sufficiently
familiar with the new interface to know where you go to delete styles in v 10,
but it'll be somewhere.]

Be careful with Step 6 (that's step 6 in the first procedure, the one with
consecutive step numbers). As written, what you are doing is redefining an
existing paragraph tag (the one that was applied to the current paragraph) to
have the imported formatting characteristics. What I think was desired was to
import a paragraph format along with its own tag name, and the easiest way to
do that (and avoiding the possibilitiy of mistyping the name in the paragraph

format to the paragraph catalog, then delete the paragraph. Anything else is
just overcomplicating the process.

I like Fred's solution for multiple para's. For a single para I modify as
follows:
-place cursor anywhere in the para
-choose Copy Special  Paragraph Format
-go to your destination document, place the cursor where you'd like the new
format
-choose Paste.
-use Para Designer to add para format to para catalog

 Yes. You can do import single paragraph, character, and conditional text

 Save the FM file containing the paragraph format you want as a MIF file.
 Use MIF Browse to locate, select and copy the paragraph format.

 Paste that MIF code in a text editor. In addition to the paragraph format,
 you'll also need the

 tags, as well as the

   # end of Pgf
  # end of PgfCatalog

 In the text file, make sure to include a MIFFILE header is at the top of
 the page. It should look something like this:
 MIFFile 7.00 # Generated by FrameMaker 7.0p579 You can grab a MIFFILe
 header from any MIF file and use that.
 Save the MIF fragment, and then open it in FrameMaker. It should appear as
 a blank page.
 Import in paragraph formats from the MIF fragment into the Frame document.
 Voila.

 A quick search of list archives back to 2007 doesn’t quite address this.
 Where does one find, for a reasonable license fee, a set of Word macros
/ VBA
 code, for managing (especially cleaning and applying) Word styles,
 perhaps in the manner of Silicon Prairie Software’s:
 §  Paragraph Tools
 §  Character Tools
 §  Table Tools ?
 We cut our teeth on Frame and love it, but we’re making peace with Word
 after completing an FAA project earlier this year. Just looking to
 automate work that’s tedious and content-free so we have more time to
 focus on the client.
 We’re coming up to speed on QuickBasic after working in a C dialect for
 years on unrelated work, so a sidestep to VBA won’t kill us. But we’d
 rather drive a production car than a jalopy if we can pay the sticker

Restore numbering properties for Appendices in large book

2011-08-22 Thread Carol Gosnell
I have been working on a large User Guide for a software release and
concurrently have been updating the templates to coordinate with RoboHelp. I
didn't think there were any changes that would affect the numbering
properties, but suddenly, when I updated my book, all the appendices are
labeled A. No matter what I specify in the numbering dialog boxes, there is
no change. I have tried importing the Document Properties from an earlier
version where the numbering still is behaving correctly. Now I have two
non-contiguous appendices that show B, but all the rest are still A.

I am using FrameMaker 10 within TCS3. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

RE: Stupid question #843: Importing a SINGLE paragraph style from another FM file?

2011-08-22 Thread Ragnar Hanås
I´m using the Frame Script SuperImportBundle which does exactly what you ask
for. You can also import single formats as below:
ImpSelMasterPage (Imports master pages)
ImpSelRefPage  (Imports reference pages)
* ImpSelPgfFmt (Imports paragraph formats)
* ImpSelCharFmt (Imports character formats)
* ImpSelVarFmt (Imports variable formats)
* ImpSelTblFmt (Imports table formats)
* ImpSelColors (Imports colors)
* ImpSelXRefFmt (Imports cross ref formats)
* ImpSelCondFmt (Imports condition formats)
* ImpSelRulingFmt (Imports ruling formats)
* ImpSelMarkerType (Imports marker types)

See http://framescript.natebus.de/index.php?navi=superimportbundle (in
German, but the script is in English). It is worth every penny if you have
Frame Script.

I'm lost on this one: I want to import/copy a single paragraph style

How do I do this?

Not a stupid question at all. In addition to Fred and other's responses, if
you want to import a single (or multiple) style across a whole book or
books, try this:

. Copy the document that contains the style you want to propagate. This will
be your 'seed' document for the new/revised style.

. Open the copy and delete all the styles except the one of interest
('Delete' from the relevant palette).

. Import across the book(s) from that document, choosing character,
paragraph or table format import as appropriate (File Import Formats).

. Discard the copied document that acted as the 'seed' for the new style
definition.

If the style doesn't already exist in the book(s), it will be added to the
relevant catalog for each document in the book. If the style does exist in
the book(s), the imported style will overwrite the existing style of the
same name.

Obviously you can do this as well for multiple styles.

If you find yourself doing this a lot, SiliconPrairie's very reasonably
priced plug-ins (Character Tools, PAragraph Tools and Table Tools) offer a
command to delete all styles of the relevant type that are not used in a
document.

[These instructions are for pre-FrameMaker v 9 versions: I'm not
sufficiently familiar with the new interface to know where you go to delete
styles in v 10, but it'll be somewhere.]

MstrPg-Use question using RefPg-Table in Structured FrameMaker - 7.2

2011-08-22 Thread Richard Doll

Framers,

Dell - 490 WorkStation ,
   Mem-4G (3.2 useable),
   Dual Monitors,
   Dual 80G hard Drives w/one 1T Western Digital (for backup)
   DSL for data communications (sure beats USPS, FedEx 'n UPS)
Win OpSys
   XP Pro - Serv Pk 3 Fully patched
FrameMaker
   7.2 - Fully Patched

My tables have a Table columns attribute that (with a Reference-Page
table) will control a table-specified MasterPage based on column quantity.

My tables have column-quantities from 3-6 and a 2nd group from 10-14.
The 3-6 col. group needs to be on 2-col pages and the 10-14 group on a 1-col
(full) page
I do have 4-different Masters . . . named . . . 2cRT, 2cLft, 1cRt and 1cLft
which do quite well when applied manually, a one or a few pages at a time.
The Section pg count varies from 30pp - 250pp with 0-2 images on full-width
pages and 1-6 images on 2-col pages.
The Section usually begins in full width (mode) and will alternate 1-col to
2-col three to twelve times per Section.

You can see . . . they can get quite busy and  . . . what I want is . . .
for the Table-Columns attribute to control pagination MasterPgs upon the
input of the SGML-data file.

Two questions . .  .
   1. Is this RefPg Element-Attribute TableMasterPg a real, working,
solution?
   2. Where can I find written instruct's that offers a great
instructional view of How it works and How to make it work?
   3. In the columns attribute value is the column-count(TEXTnumber) . .
. In the RefPg Table - in the attribute value column . . . Can I enter 8
and cause the 2-col. Master to be used and . . . enter 8 to cause the
full/p-1-col Master to be used???

   4. or do I need to spec each col. quantity separately???

Thanks for reading this and double Thanks for answering!

best to all,

Hi,

do you know Book Transfer since FrameMaker 5.x?
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAw15_0UIqQ

You can decide for one directory or multiple directories for text

I don't see anything insulting in Fred Ridder's reply, and I also don't
think Fred claimed that "his way is the only way to accomplish the task".
But, Fred's way is usually the best way, just check the hundreds of valuable
contributions that Fred has made to this list.

By the way, the insults are in your reply, Dimi, so you should apologize to
Fred instead of he to you.

Managing Word styles with macros / VBA

I too am in that same boat, spending more time than I'd like on Word

comprehensive set of macros by Paul Beverley. I don't remember if there
are any specifically for managing styles, but I'm sure you'll find
something useful there.

Thanks.

Stupid question #843: Importing a SINGLE paragraph style from another FM file?

2011-08-22 Thread Ragnar Hanås
I?m using the Frame Script SuperImportBundle which does exactly what you ask
for. You can also import single formats as below:
ImpSelMasterPage (Imports master pages)
ImpSelRefPage  (Imports reference pages)
* ImpSelPgfFmt (Imports paragraph formats)
* ImpSelCharFmt (Imports character formats)
* ImpSelVarFmt (Imports variable formats)
* ImpSelTblFmt (Imports table formats)
* ImpSelColors (Imports colors)
* ImpSelXRefFmt (Imports cross ref formats)
* ImpSelCondFmt (Imports condition formats)
* ImpSelRulingFmt (Imports ruling formats)
* ImpSelMarkerType (Imports marker types)

See http://framescript.natebus.de/index.php?navi=superimportbundle (in
German, but the script is in English). It is worth every penny if you have
Frame Script.

('Delete' from the relevant palette).

. Import across the book(s) from that document, choosing character,
paragraph or table format import as appropriate (File > Import > Formats).
