Re: Printing rich media pdfs from FrameMaker 10

2011-09-02 Thread Vikrant Rai
Hi Kate,

This question seems to come up quite often, and the answer is always the same.
It can get a little confusing at times, especially when deadlines are looming
large, and all you want is a PDF.
Let my try and explain why you need to Save as PDF rather than Print.

The Print to PDF route is used to create a Print ready PDF that can be sent
for physical printing. It replaces your physical printer with the Adobe PDF
Printer or Distiller. A PDF thus created is closest representation of what the
document will look like when it is printed on paper.
If someone prints a document on paper, they don't expect a video to play when
you pick up the paper. Not yet, anyway. Same thing with Print to PDF.

The Save to PDF however creates an interactive PDF that is not explicitly
meant for printing, but for viewing on electronic devices. Audio, Video, 3D
models etc are included.

Thanks,
Vikrant

Kate,

Please use SaveAsPDF instead of printing. The rich media is embedded in PDF
only in SaveAsPDF route.

Hello, I am trying to print a rich media pdf from FrameMaker 10. I can import
the video file into FM and it will play but when I print to pdf, the video
comes out as a picture and playback is not possible. I have tried this with
lots of different file types - a .wmv, .mp4, .mov and .mp2 files all of which
are supported by FM 10 but none of which work.

Is there a setting that I have missed? Should I be saving the file to pdf
instead of printing? Any help would be much appreciated!

Kate

RE: Distilling Mixed Sizes

2011-09-02 Thread Herbert Leusink
Hello Eduardo,

We've faced a similar problem with mixed A3/A4 pages. FM will use the page
size of the chapter from which you start printing for all the following
pages. Two ways to do this:
- save the book chapter by chapter to PDF and glue the chapters together in
Acrobat.
- save the book to PDF, save the chapter(s) with the larger size pages
separately to PDF, remove the chopped pages from the PDF and replace them
with large separately saved chapters.

But if anyone knows of a better method, please share it.

Good afternoon fellow Frame Templars and Acrobats

I'm looking for that proverbial magic bullet whereby I can distill FrameMaker
pages of
different sizes without chopping them down to size.

First, the system:

Frame 9 unstructured
Acrobat 9 Pro
Windows XP SP3

Next, The setup:

A FrameMaker book, including 13 chapters, 7 appendices, and several key
indices.
Mostly a 8.5 X 11 inch with about 6 pages embedded with 8.5 X 14.

After using every setting in Distiller, all pages are distilled into 8.5 X
11, literally
chopping off the tops and bottoms of the 8.5 X 14 pages.

I've done this before and didn't change any settings, so I'm thinking there
has to be a bug
somewhere either in Acrobat or due to a recent Windows SP3 upgrade.

If there are any suggestions, please let me know.

2011-09-02 Thread Baruch Brodersen
This topic has been addressed several times the last few months. It can be
done and fully on the template level through postscript textboxes on master
pages, and it can be further automated by incorporating the use of Apply
Master Pages so that content you want on A3 pages will always stay on A3
pages and likewise with the A4 pages.
This method is too much bother for most, who opt to produce separate PDFs
and cobble them together through post-processing efforts.

I think the easiest way to go is just to pick the largest page size in
Acrobat when you distill and let the whole book go.
Reader automatically resizes so that the page zoom fills the available
window real estate.

deleting a variable across an entire book

2011-09-02 Thread John Sgammato
I have an 86-chapter book with the same variables in every chapter.
I want to convert all instances of all user variables to text.
I can delete the variable in one chapter and thus convert all instances in that
chapter, but importing variable definitions across the whole book doesn't
delete any variables from the other chapters.
Can anyone recommend a way to do this? (I'd rather not learn FrameScript this
afternoon!)
Thanks!

Setting a thin space in a variable

2011-09-02 Thread Lea Rush
Hello,

Frame 8.0p277

Win Vista, although I don’t think it matters in this case

I’d like to use a variable to list a phrase with uses a thin space between
the terms. Is that possible? A quick check in Help yielded the method for
typing the thin space but nothing else.

Thanks much,

Lea

Hi Lea

You can use the hex code \x12 where ever you want the thin space to appear.
I've got an old version of the Windows Character Sets if you want it...I
believe it has remained consistent over the years although I wouldn't lay
money on it!

Hi Lea,

Use \st or \i in your variable. Alternatively, you can type the keyboard
sequence Esc space t.

RE: deleting a variable across an entire book

2011-09-02 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Yes! I highly endorse BookVars ... thanks for providing it, Scott.

To John and others: I will make the following prediction.

If you use a lot of variables (whether in FM books that contain multiple files
or not), you will end up buying it (i.e., not give it up after 30 days) once
you try it! :)

This is, quite literally, the one FM add-on that I use just about every time I
work on any of my FM documents for variable updates.

Hi John...

You can use our BookVars plugin to do this ..

http://leximation.com/tools/info/bookvars.php

Feel free to download the 30-day trial to accomplish this task .. if that's all
you need it for, there's no need to buy it!

Printing rich media pdfs from FrameMaker 10

2011-09-02 Thread Vikrant Rai
Hi Kate,

This question seems to come up quite often, and the answer is always the same.
It can get a little confusing at times, especially when deadlines are looming
large, and all you want is a PDF.
Let my try and explain why you need to "Save as PDF" rather than Print.

The "Print to PDF" route is used to create a Print ready PDF that can be sent
for physical printing.

The "Save to PDF" however creates an interactive PDF that is not explicitly
meant for printing, but for viewing on electronic devices. Audio, Video, 3D
models etc are included.

Thanks,
Vikrant

Distilling Mixed Sizes

2011-09-02 Thread Herbert Leusink
Hello Eduardo,

We've faced a similar problem with mixed A3/A4 pages. FM will use the page
size of the chapter from which you start printing for all the following
pages. Two ways to do this:
- save the book chapter by chapter to PDF and glue the chapters together in
Acrobat.
- save the book to PDF, save the chapter(s) with the larger size pages
separately to PDF, remove the chopped pages from the PDF and replace them
with large separately saved chapters.

But if anyone knows of a better method, please share it.

Best regards,

Subject: Distilling Mixed Sizes

Live from New York!

Good afternoon fellow Frame Templars and Acrobats

I'm looking for that proverbial magic bullet whereby I can distill FrameMaker
pages of
different sizes without chopping them down to size.

First, the system:

Frame 9 unstructured
Acrobat 9 Pro
Windows XP SP3

Next, The setup:

A FrameMaker book, including 13 chapters, 7 appendices, and several key
indices.
Mostly a 8.5 X 11 inch with about 6 pages embedded with 8.5 X 14.

After using every setting in Distiller, all pages are distilled into 8.5 X
11, literally
"chopping" off the tops and bottoms of the 8.5 X 14 pages.

I've done this before and didn't change any settings, so I'm thinking there
has to be a bug
somewhere either in Acrobat or due to a recent Windows SP3 upgrade.

If there are any suggestions, please let me know.

All the best, standing tall, sword and shield

Eduardo

Distilling Mixed Sizes

2011-09-02 Thread Baruch Brodersen
This topic has been addressed several times the last few months. It can be
done and fully on the template level through postscript textboxes on master
pages, and it can be further automated by incorporating the use of Apply
Master Pages so that content you want on A3 pages will always stay on A3
pages and likewise with the A4 pages.
This method is too much bother for most, who opt to produce separate PDFs
and cobble them together through post-processing efforts.

Here's June's thread:

Distilling Mixed Sizes

2011-09-02 Thread Art Campbell
I think the easiest way to go is just to pick the largest page size in
Acrobat when you distill and let the whole book go.
Reader automatically resizes so that the page zoom fills the available
window real estate.

deleting a variable across an entire book

2011-09-02 Thread John Sgammato
I have an 86-chapter book with the same variables in every chapter.
I want to convert all instances of all user variables to text.
I can delete the variable in one chapter and thus convert all instances in that
chapter, but importing variable definitions across the whole book doesn't
delete any variables from the other chapters.
Can anyone recommend a way to do this? (I'd rather not learn FrameScript this
afternoon!)
Thanks!

Setting a thin space in a variable

2011-09-02 Thread Lea Rush
Hello,

Frame 8.0p277

Win Vista, although I don?t think it matters in this case

I?d like to use a variable to list a phrase with uses a thin space between

Setting a thin space in a variable

2011-09-02 Thread Lea Rush
Thanks for the suggestion, Jerilynne. Unfortunately, the character after the
thin space is a number, so it didn?t work well. Also unfortunately, another
suggestion to use either /i or /st was also unsuccessful. :/

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Lea

Hi Lea

You can use the hex code \x12 where ever you want the thin space to appear.
I've got an old version of the Windows Character Sets if you want it...I
believe it has remained consistent over the years although I wouldn't lay
money on it!

I?d like to use a variable to list a phrase with uses a thin space between
the terms. Is that possible? A quick check in Help yielded the method for
typing the thin space but nothing else.

The help topic you want is "Typing in Dialog Boxes." There, you'll find key
sequences for entering many special characters in dialog boxes, including the
thin space (\st or \i).

Oh ? dang. I just realized that I reversed the slashes in the other things I
tried. ?\?st works perfectly, ?/?st not so much. Thank you to all who
replied.

As others have said, this list rocks. Thanks!

You also may want to bookmark this page from the online help which list

deleting a variable across an entire book

2011-09-02 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Interesting ... when I use a "Cc:" to include the FrameUsers list, I get copied
back through the list eventually.

But, if I put the address in the "To:" field, it apparently does NOT come back
(to me anyway) in a subsequent e-mail.

So ... did people see my first response (as shown below), or did it go away
completely? If so, I will need to be more careful with my replies, I guess!

I am huge fan of the BookVars tool from Leximation ... the one FrameMaker
add-on that I use the most!

Please give it a try to see if it does exactly what you need.

Subject: deleting a variable across an entire book

I have an 86-chapter book with the same variables in every chapter.
I want to convert all instances of all user variables to text.
I can delete the variable in one chapter and thus convert all instances in that
chapter, but importing variable definitions across the whole book doesn't
delete any variables from the other chapters.
Can anyone recommend a way to do this? (I'd rather not learn FrameScript this
afternoon!)
Thanks!

On your mailing list membership configuration page (link is in footer of
messages to you), one of the options you can set determines whether you get
copies of your own posts. I have it turned on. It sounds like turning it off
prevents you from getting copies when you directly post to the list, but the
setting doesn't affect Cc's or Bcc's.

Yes, it appeared.

Ah! Thanks for this information!

As I recall, I do get a copy back when I _originate_ posts to the list directly
(i.e., without being part of a reply, but in the "To:" field), so I must have
that setting on.

Maybe it is yet different when it is in the "To:" field with other addresses in
that field as well.

Regardless, I will be more careful to see how I am replying.

It should be a backslash, not forward slash.
