RE: Training material for FrameMaker 10?

2011-11-18 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
If you are already familiar with FM, then there's no reference book that I know
of for FM10; however, a good guide to FM (based on the FM8 interface) is the
Scriptorium.com reference work (very cheap as a PDF download). The screens (UI)
have changed in FM9+, but the functionality remains the same.

Or abandon RH altogether and go with WebWorks ePublisher. ePublisher
provides an inline process that ingests FM 7 without creating a second
set of source files.

Getting out of View-only state

2011-11-18 Thread Thomas Scalise
I am running Frame 10.0.1.402 on Windows 7. Somehow, I have put a number of the
chapters in a book into View-only mode. I tried the Esc Shift+flk key sequence
but it has no effect (surprise, surprise). Can anyone help me out? I am not
sure how these files got into this state. I need to get them back into a normal
Document state.

The book was a Frame 9 book that I brought into Frame 10 and saved as a Frame
10 book and documents. The generated files are not View-only and one of the
chapter files is not, The rest of the chapter files are View-only.

For the life of me I cannot figure out what I did.

Re: FW: FrameMaker7 to RoboHelp 5 - Online Help Files

2011-11-18 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hello Carmen

Welcome to the Framers list! You'll find a lot of willing helpers here.

The software versions you mention are pretty old, so there may be few people
who can give you specific guidance. I don't know whether RH5 can import FM
files directly. If it can, that is your way to go. If it cannot, I would
suggest:

* Look in the FM help about saving your document to HTML. I believe you have
the option to split the FM document into multiple HTML files whenever it
encounters specific paragraph (heading) tags. These options are specified on a
reference page called HTML Mapping or something similar.
* If that reference page doesn't exist, you may have an option on the File
menu, perhaps under Utilities, to set up HTML export options. Again, consult
the help.
* Once you have exported the HTML files, import them into your RoboHelp project.

Your other options would be:

* Investigate whether RH can import a Word document. If it can, save your FM
document as RTF (I believe that in FM7 the Japanese RTF export was more
reliable and faster), then open it in Word and resave it (as .doc, not .docx).
Then import the Word doc into RH. Again, I assume you can break the doc into
smaller HTML files based on Word styles.

* If the situation will arise again in future and you think it's worth it,
consider upgrading to the Tech Communication Suite. In TCS, FM and RH are
integrated so that you can link your FM docs into a RH project and create help
directly.

As a first preparation step to all the above, ensure that your FM document uses
consistent tagging with few or no overrides. And after you have converted,
expect to have to do a fair amount of cleanup.

Hope this helps you. Feel free to post further questions or update the list on
your progress.

Re: Applying Paragraph Tags with F9 Not Working in Frame 10

2011-11-18 Thread Keith . Soltys
 Thanks Tim,

A few times I figured out that if I dropped the drop down paragraph list

off the menu bar, then it seemed to work all day, if every time it
stopped working I did that. My frustration day happened when I couldn't
get the bottom window to even show where the Character or paragraph tag
appeared and my above workaround wasn't working.

I started out in old Word Perfect without a mouse. This feature not
working is extremely upsetting as I am constantly key coding the
formatting with resulting bad stuff in my document. Fortunately, Frame 8

is still living happily on my machine, coexisting with Frame 10, so I
may go back to it. There are some improvements I have liked in Frame 10,

but the lack of the key codes for formatting is a show stopper in my
book.

 Linda

A few years ago I bought a FrameScript from Rick Quatro called ShortCuts.
It gives you pretty much complete control over keyboard shortcuts,
including letting you map paragraph and character styles to whatever
keyboard shortcuts you like. I've used it to map my basic styles so they
use the same keyboard shortcuts I use in Word (for example CTRL+ALT+B for
BodyText, CTRL+ALT+L for ListBullet).

If you use FrameScript, it might be a solution for you.

Honestly, there are enough cheap add-ins and free FrameScripts out there
to justify the cost, even if you don't plan to program in it.

Keith

hotkey bug in FrameMaker 10

2011-11-18 Thread Joseph Lorenzini
Hi all,

I have the TCS 3.5. I was wondering if anyone else was seeing the following
issue. To bring up the paragraph designer pod, one users the hotkey *ctrl+m*.
To bring up the character designer pod, one uses the hotkey* ctrl+d*. I
noticed that if i bring up the characer designer, then I can not use a
hotkey to bring up the paragraph designer. The converse is true as well,
where if i have brought up the paragraph designer then a hot key cannot
bring up the character designer.

Anyone else seeing this?

Sincerely,
Joseph Lorenzini

FWIW, I found that there was not a terribly steep learning curve for
