Hi Scott,

I would do it with automatic numbering. If necessary in 
a separate text frame.
Restart the autonumbering of p e.g. with a separate 
paragraph; this could be the title paragraph of a new part.
Continue the autonumbering for b throughout all files in
the book (or just use the page number variable).

1.   You could change or/and delete the conditional in a book thru
all files with Finalyser:
There is a ExtendScript to change, to delete any conditional thru a
book: 
www.finalyser.com in FrameMaker 10.
You can download Finalyser and install it without license (trial for 30
days).

2.   Save in FrameMaker 10 as RTF.

We've got multi-chapter documents where the source files are
unstructured FM10 book files. We'd like to publish as epub files too.



What software are people using for that?



We've just played with Elmsoft's new EPubFm but it doesn't work on book
files, just standalone FM files. We don't have the resources to convert
to structured FM, and the books are format-heavy enough that
save-as-html looks crappy.



Adobe's marketing material shows FM with an epub option if you're using
FM and Robohelp from the Tech Comms Suite. We haven't got the suite -
does anyone know if you can get this FM option by just adding Robohelp
on top of a standard FM installation?



Any advice or success stories gratefully accepted!

Why can't you simply add a main section called "Future developments" or alike 
to your book(s) and sum up the future developments there (and add a reference 
to the current AS IS situation)?
That would not conflict with the actual AS IS content and still please the 
marketing request (cause that's what it is!)

I could use some insight into a situation I haven't encountered before today: 
how does one best respond to a request (read: order) to include something in 
their product's documentation about a functionality that will not be released 
with the upcoming release?(it will?still be in development)?but is hoped to be 
ready "shortly" (whatever that means)?after the product is released.

I've politely pointed out that industry best practice is to document what IS as 
opposed to what WILL BE and that certain liabilities might be incurred if 
promises are made and then something goes wrong. 
?
Any thoughts?

Hi Laura, I've had the same issue. I've experimented quite a bit with this.

What I eventually found worked best, was to create a PDF of the manual with the 
required conditions showing. In Acrobat, I then use Export> Word document or 
Export> RTF.

It's still messy I have to admit - you may need to do a quick edit of the 
resulting Word files to tidy them up, but it's what I now do.

Depends really if the customer wants just the text or if they want a "nice" 
version.

I have a group of manuals where I use conditional text to keep track of the 
different variations.

My customer asked to have a word copy of one of the manuals. Is there a way to 
choose conditional text for the manual that I want which excludes all of the 
other conditional text in the final output? When exporting to an .rtf file, all 
of the information gets exported, even if I'm only showing the conditional text 
that I'm interested in. As a work around of last resort, I had to do a Show All 
and manually strip out everything I didn't want in the final version.

There must be a better way. I've been using v7.1, but on the trial version of 
10 I noticed the same thing happening. Does any one have any ideas?

Thanks for all of your suggestions. 

For those who were curious, the reason I was asked to do this is that the 
company who owns the manuals sometimes sells their product under a rebranding 
agreement, and smaller companies do not have the justification to use Frame. 
I'm not too worried about anyone else taking over that manual set. The company 
has been a client for a number of years and they keep pushing work my way. And, 
their customer was warned that the Word output wasn't going to look too pretty. 
;-)

In terms of the export itself, the actual exporting to .rtf files wasn't a big 
deal for those chapters that were mostly straight text. However, there were 
plenty of tables and screen captures, which initially bloated up the manual to 
640MB. Using Acrobat Pro to save as word files seriously messed up the 
formatting in places, so I ended up using a combination of the two methods for 
individual chapters.

As for the .mif export, that didn't seem to eliminate the conditional text that 
I was trying to exclude. Maybe I just didn't know enough about how to do that. 
Next time I'll try Mif2go.
