Recommended graphic file format for single-sourcing from Frame to Robohelp?

Hello Framers -

It has been several years since I have been part of this group, so I apologize 
if this topic has been covered extensively somewhere (if so,  please feel free 
to point me to it). I have recently resumed my Technical Writing career at a 
software development company that uses FrameMaker to create its documentation. 
All the legacy manuals were delivered with the products as hyperlinked PDF 
files (not really meant for printing due to length, although one could do so 
and they are formatted correctly for that).

The company recently purchased TCS3, and would like to single-source Frame 
files to online help using Robohelp. I have been trying to find out what would 
be the best graphic file format  to use for this multi-purpose moving forward. 
Some background: All legacy images, which are primarily screenshots with some 
flowcharts, were .tif files, RGB color, 96 dpi (again, intended for on-screen 
viewing). Using TCS3 moving forward, is there a better/clear recommendation for 
what graphic file format would produce the best results?

I have been searching the web for a few days and can't seem to find any 
information on this particular aspect of single-sourcing using the new TCS3. 
Does it not matter, i.e., does one just set up Robohelp templates to convert 
.tifs to .jpgs or similar?

Thanks to all the kind people who shared the way to fix copy paste from 
Word into Frame.

Here's how:
Open the file maker.ini, which in my case was here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2\Adobe 
FrameMaker 9

Edit the line:
ClipboardFormatsPriorities=FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, BMP, MIFW, MIF, 
RTF, UNICODE TEXT, TEXT

Change the line to:
ClipboardFormatsPriorities=UNICODE TEXT, FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, 
BMP, MIFW, MIF, RTF,  TEXT

You will need administrators right to do the editing.

refine client content, as not everyone is ready for a "six figure
spell checker". But its ability to build custom language rules, full
approved (and deprecated) terminology lists, and reuse repositories
is, from my experience, unmatched. And yes, I've used SDL Author
Assistant.

paste from word was interpreted as a copy paste from a text file. I have 
moved to FrameMaker 9 but I can't seem to find the place to change now. 
FM 9 inserts copy paste from word as an ole object and I merely wants it 
to insert plain text without formatting. Can somebody helP

I'm using Frame 8, but if you choose Edit>Paste Special, then choose Text, it 
should work.

Fixed copy paste as text into FrameMaker 9

I had made this ini edit previously but placed TEXT first in the line. 
What is the difference between TEXT and UNICODE TEXT in regards to a paste 
format? How can one paste unicode text into a non-unicode font or vice 
versa? I've been using unicode fonts and it seems to work OK as TEXT, 
although occasionally, I do have an issue. It is FM and unicode so I 
expect a few issues.  :-) 

Any insight is appreciated.

refine client content, as not everyone is ready for a "six figure
spell checker". But its ability to build custom language rules, full
approved (and deprecated) terminology lists, and reuse repositories
is, from my experience, unmatched. And yes, I've used SDL Author

Hi Bj?rn,



There are two maker.ini files with later versions of FrameMaker. One is in
the Program Files > FrameMaker folder (as before), but there is another one
in the Users area. I am not sure the exact path, but if you search for
maker.ini on your C: drive, both of them should come up. The key/value pair
you are looking for will be in one of them. Please let me know if you have

Hi Bjorn,

You need to edit the "ClipboardFormatsPriorities" in the FM9 maker.ini
file, typically located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\FrameMaker9.

By default, the line should read:

ClipboardFormatsPriorities=FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, BMP, MIFW, MIF,
RTF, UNICODE TEXT, TEXT

In your case, you probably want to change it to:

ClipboardFormatsPriorities=UNICODE TEXT, TEXT, FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB,
BMP, MIFW, MIF, RTF

Be sure to back up the maker.ini file before you modify it, just in case
you need to revert.

FW: FM10 Size Limitation for Linked RH Project?

Hi all,

We are using TCS3 (FM10, RH9) on Windows XP.  We currently author in Frame and 
have our files linked by reference to RoboHelp to generate our help system.

Most everything has been running smoothly until now.  We took a separate 
reporting guide and added it to the user guide as an appendix.  That single 
Frame file is very large (98,589KB/96.28MB) and dwarfs all of our other FM 
files in size.

When we now update the Frame files in RoboHelp, all of the Frame files except 
for the new appendix FM file pull over and generate just fine.  With the new 
appendix file, all we get is the icon showing that the files are out of sync 
and no HTML topics produced.

Is there a limitation on the size a Frame file can be when linked by reference 
to a RoboHelp project?  This is about the only thing I can think of that is 
different and I wonder if this is what is causing issues.

How to make it possible to fix copy paste from Word into FrameMaker 9 ?

Hi Bjorn,

You need to edit the "ClipboardFormatsPriorities" in the FM9 maker.ini
file, typically located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\FrameMaker9.

By default, the line should read:

ClipboardFormatsPriorities=FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, BMP, MIFW, MIF,
RTF, UNICODE TEXT, TEXT

In your case, you probably want to change it to:

ClipboardFormatsPriorities=UNICODE TEXT, TEXT, FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB,
BMP, MIFW, MIF, RTF

Be sure to back up the maker.ini file before you modify it, just in case
you need to revert.

Hi Bjørn,

 

There are two maker.ini files with later versions of FrameMaker. One is in
the Program Files > FrameMaker folder (as before), but there is another one
in the Users area. I am not sure the exact path, but if you search for
maker.ini on your C: drive, both of them should come up. The key/value pair
you are looking for will be in one of them. Please let me know if you have
