hard coded path names for imported graphics and x-refs

2012-02-16 Thread meg miranda
Hi all,

We're using Frame 10 and doing unstructured books.

We have source files out on a network drive, but we do often copy the files to
our local machines so that we can work remotely and offline on them.

So now I have a book out on the network drive that somehow is referencing
images on c:\dic\mybook\userguide\images\button.jpg instead of
\images\button.jpg.  A similar thing has happened to some of the x-refs in 3 of
the chapters.  We are getting specific references instead of relative
references.

Does anyone have any suggestions why this behavior is happening? or how to fix
it without having to open each chapter file and repoint the graphic directory?

I think I'm most conserned about understanding why it is happening, so that I
can tell our team how to avoid this problem.

thanks,
meg

Miranda,
Why it is happening is probably because some of the images weren't replaced
with the new pointers.

The good thing is it's an easy fix (the following works with Frame 7.2, so I am
guessing that it will work with Frame 10).

1. Make sure the network images folder contains ALL of the images.
2. Make sure the local path doesn't exist. If the folder is still there, change
the folder name, or delete it. The safe way is to rename it. This way Frame
can't automatically find the folder, and if an image is missing from the
network folder you can manually copy it out to the network folder.
3. Open the book file, select all of the chapters, and press Enter to open all
chapters.
4. At the first missing image file, redirect it to the network folder. That
chapter, and all remaining chapters, that have incorrect image folder links
should automatically readjust to the network images folder.

Numbering Issue

2012-02-16 Thread Anderson, Ben
Just a follow up. I needed to set my numbering sequences to "continue" in the

Subject: Numbering Issue

Hello Framers,

I'm having brain-lock today and need some assistance!!!

I'm trying to get the Headings of my bookfile to number sequentially (Section:
1, Section: 2, etc.) from document to document, but they are restarting at 1 in
each document when I generate the book. The auto number format I'm using is:
S:Section <n+>. \t.

I know I'm missing something, but am in a crunch and don't have the time to
trouble-shoot.

TIA!!!

FrameMaker 10 Crashes when I do a Find and Replace of a character format

2012-02-16 Thread Joseph Lorenzini
Hi all:

If I do a find and replace of a character format across an entire book,
Framemaker sucks up all the memory on my system and then crashes. I was
wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior.

Steps to Reproduce

1. create a large book that contains several hundred pages and many
framemaker files. Ideally, there should be 20 or so files in it.
2. through out the book, highlight text and then press ctrl+b. This applies
a character format override of bold.
3. open a framemaker doc from the book.
4. place your cursor in some body text.
5. open the find dialog box.
6. Set find to character format.
7. In the find char format dialog box, press shift+F8.
8. In the find char format dialog box, press shift+F9.
9. in th find char format dialog box, set the weight to bold and then click
the set button.
10. in the framemaker doc, find some text that has bold override applied to
it and then apply a character format.
11. Use the copy special to copy the character format to your clipboard.
12. close all documents.
13. make sure the book is active.
14. in the find dialog box, set change to "by pasting".
15. select the find button.

System Specs:
Win 7, 64 bit
Processor: Intel Core i5
8 GB of RAM
solid state drive

automatically splitting a heading between two frames

2012-02-16 Thread McCarthy, Brian P
To simplify the template even further: one frame and one para tag that has the
autonumber and a tab that sets the text to where you want it.

Clever idea, but it I can't figure out how to make it work. The
ChapNum frame is 1.0" wide. If I try to set a tab stop at 1.0", saving
the paragraph tag fails with "The tab position is too far to the
right."

If I set the stop to .99", the first two characters of the heading are
in the ChapNum box, and the heading gets messed up in the
corresponding PDF bookmark as well.

I tried widening the ChapNum frame so that its right edge is aligned
with the ChapName frame's left edge, that gets rid of the error but if
I set the tab stop past the right edge of the ChapNum frame it seems
to be ignored.
