RE: Upgrading from 9 to 10
Thank you to Rick and Jeff. For those of you upgrading from 9 to 10 on Win 7, 64 bit systems, you copy both the .cfsw and .fws files FROM the following directory C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\9\WorkSpaces\UnStructured TO the following directory: C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\10\WorkSpaces\UnStructured Why this isn't done automatically if you are doing an upgrade and not a from scratch install is beyond me, but all my workspaces are indeed now available in Framemaker 10. FM 9p255 only uses 25% of CPU no matter what
Hi Framers: I have taken to watching FM9 crash using task manager and winternals. What struck me is that no matter what load was put on FM9, it never used more than 25% of the CPU. It hovered at 24.9 but never above. Does that means only one of the four processors is being accessed. All coprocessors are working... Added to this disturbing reading (and maybe I have misunderstood how quads work) Windows 7 reports on running the compatibility add-on that FM is INCOMPATIBLE with windows 7. It tries to run it under the XP shell, but that makes FM very slow. My feeling is that FM9 was designed for Vista and nobody bothered to fix it after windows 7 was introduced. Why does that disturb you? Many, many apps (even current releases) don't take advantage of multiple processors, or of only two (2 or 4 threads). There's little to be gained unless you're doing heavy graphics or video work. Your other processors are available to the other apps you're running at the same time. Added to this disturbing reading (and maybe I have misunderstood how quads work) Windows 7 reports on running the compatibility add-on that FM is INCOMPATIBLE with windows 7. FM 10, released more than a year ago, is compatible with Windows 7. But I wouldn't rush to upgrade, because FM 11 will likely be announced soon. It's unrealistic and unreasonable, IMHO, to expect Adobe to release an FM 9.x version that's Windows 7 compatible, or to fix anything other than security issues or other serious bugs. Re: Automatic ligatures
On 26/03/2012 9:20 PM, Roger Shuttleworth wrote: Hi Matanya As others have said, FrameMaker on Windows does not do ligatures; that's because they are not included in the Windows character sets. That is only partially true. Indeed the fi and fl ligatures are not part of the main character set and not accessible with Alt-0xxx numeric keyboard codes, but they do reside at the bottom end of most type 1 and TT fonts with U-xxx accessible codes. Just open the font with Windows' Character map to see this. The fact remains that both QuarkExpress and InDesign found a way to access these characters. I see no reason why FrameMaker cannot accomplish the same. What both QuarkExpress and InDesign also are unable to do is access the ff, ffi and ffl ligatures, since, indeed, these characters are only found in Expert fonts. I could live with just fi and fl, if necessary. Why, then, I do not migrate to these typographically superior programs? because they are deficient on features that are important to me in the production of scholarly books such as footnotes, indexes etc. There is a Quark extension that can do this, but it cost about twice as much as the program itself. So there, I am stuck with FM-8 and expert fonts. The only resource that I am aware of is at http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/~hedrick/typography/ http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/%7Ehedrick/typography/ If you go to the bottom of that article, there's mention of a plugin for ligatures, but it appears to be only for FM 6 or 7. RE: Keep paragraph with table
Thanks Stuart, I'm sure I will get the spacing just right. I'm just so busy converting this massive document so some other writers can begin revising the content, that I haven't taken much time for fine tuning the pgf's. I like to do the tweaking later when nobody is waiting on me. That's one of the things I love about frame. I'm only using a handful of pgf's in this document and will be able to easily make formatting changes at any time during the conversion and revision process. If you set its Space Below to a negative number equal to the font size, and set the Table tag's Space Above to the same negative number, the pgf will take no additional space itself. Pagination: Top of Column
I’m compiling many short, short stories into a book. I’d like the heading for the story (author + title) to be positioned in the same place on the page. Previously I had a master page where I had split the body text frame into 6 slots (3 high x 2 columns). Setting the Paragraph Tag to Pagination: Top of Column worked perfectly putting the author at the top of the next available slot. Because of confusion with bookmarks in the pdf version, I’ve decided to reduce the slots to 3 vertical slots. Now the Pagination: Top of Column no longer works to move the author to the top of the next body text frame. Also the Master Page usage is no longer working properly. Any ideas? Hi Rob, FM9 is compatible with Win7 and I don't see any reason why it runs in WinXP compatibility mode on your PC. Framemaker 9 crashes because it is buggy. I would call it a beta version of Framemaker with the new interface. When I upgraded to FMv10, all the stability issues that you describe almost disappeared. Upgrading from 9 to 10
Thank you to Rick and Jeff. For those of you upgrading from 9 to 10 on Win 7, 64 bit systems, you copy both the .cfsw and .fws files FROM the following directory C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\9\WorkSpaces\UnStructured TO the following directory: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\10\WorkSpaces\UnStructured Why this isn't done automatically if you are doing an upgrade and not a from scratch install is beyond me, but all my workspaces are indeed now available in Framemaker 10. Again, thanks to this list. It's a lifesaving and sanity saving resource. I did not uninstall Framemaker 9 for this reason before installing the upgrade, and sigh, no joy. No workspaces apparently were saved. Before I uninstall Framemaker 9 (and fling it or something to relieve my frustration out the window), is there anything that I can save from FM 9/copy over from FM 9 to my FM 10 installation that might magically recreate these workspaces automatically? I'll bet the .fws is the Framemaker Work Space, and the .cfws is the Clean Framemaker Work Space that you get if you select Reset Workspace.
Added to this disturbing reading (and maybe I have misunderstood how quads work) Windows 7 reports on running the compatibility add-on that FM is "INCOMPATIBLE" with windows 7. It tries to run it under the XP shell, but that makes FM very slow. My feeling is that FM9 was designed for Vista and nobody bothered to fix it after windows 7 was introduced. The last patch was two years ago. I know there are a lot of people out there who have the same issues. Plus, there are some shocking reviews. Why does that disturb you? Many, many apps (even current releases) don't take advantage of multiple processors, or of only two (2 or 4 threads). There's little to be gained unless you're doing heavy graphics or video work. Your other processors are available to the other apps you're running at the same time. > Added to this disturbing reading (and maybe I have misunderstood how > quads > work) Windows 7 reports on running the compatibility add-on that FM is > "INCOMPATIBLE" with windows 7. > It tries to run it under the XP shell, but that makes FM very slow. > My feeling is that FM9 was designed for Vista and nobody bothered to > fix it > after windows 7 was introduced. > The last patch was two years ago. I know there are a lot of people out > there > who have the same issues. FM 9 was released almost a year before Windows 7. > Plus, there are some shocking reviews. Pagination: Top of Column
I?m compiling many short, short stories into a book. I?d like the heading for the story (author + title) to be positioned in the same place on the page. Previously I had a master page where I had split the body text frame into 6 slots (3 high x 2 columns). Setting the Paragraph Tag to Pagination: Top of Column worked perfectly putting the author at the top of the next available slot. Because of confusion with bookmarks in the pdf version, I?ve decided to reduce the slots to 3 vertical slots. Now the Pagination: Top of Column no longer works to move the author to the top of the next body text frame. Also the Master Page usage is no longer working properly. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help. Theresa -- === Theresa de Valence TdeV at bstw.com ===

Hi Rob, ? FM9 is compatible with Win7 and I don't see any reason why it runs in WinXP compatibility mode on your PC.?Framemaker 9?crashes because it is buggy. I would?call it a "beta version of Framemaker with the new interface". When?I upgraded to FMv10, all?the stability issues that you describe almost disappeared. I?can't say that FMv10 does not crash at all, but it does so very rarely. ? Win7 32 or 64? I've encountered many compatibility problems with the latter, would switch to 32 if it wasn't such a pain. Upgrading from 9 to 10
Looking at the dates on my Workspace files, I would guess that .fws is the original you defined, and .cfws is the "customized" or "current" one storing the latest changes to the workspace. If you only need to output to PDF, I don't think you need to do anything. I ran a quick test with FM 9/Acrobat Pro 8, and Acrobat Pro automatically recognized the text in the FM file as an email address (although, I can't find how to prevent it from doing this). You might want to give the address a character tag in FM to make it look like a link. Highlight the text in FrameMaker, and put in a hypertext marker as "message URL mailto:TdeV at bstw.com" ... this comes out in the PDF as a clickable link that will invoke the default e-mail client compose window to that address.
