Yes, I think that's true. If you just click buttons in the Find /
Replace box it doesn't loop.

I wish I had a copy of FM6 or 7 around to compare the old behavior.

I noticed that just yesterday in FM10. Eventually I started watching the
page numbers and manually saving and going on to the next file when it
restarted.

Seems like a bug to me, as does FM's long-standing tendency to change the
search scope from Book to Document on its own.

Red rectangle "Loading x%"

2012-04-06 Thread Klaus Daube
Dear all

When loading a particular file into FM-10 (p419) I get for a short time a red
rectangle in the top
left screen corner (about 400 x 300 pix) containing the text "Loading x%". Most
time the x is 10 or
15. This message appears just for about 2 seconds until the document is opened.

I have observed this behaviour only with this particular document, which is not
that large (26 pages)
and contains only 86 referenced graphics (local).

Has anyone seen this effect and an idea what's the cause of it?

documentation request form?

2012-04-06 Thread hessiansx4
I've been tasked with researching practices related to documentation requests.
Currently, we have no formal process and I suggested that requiring requestors
to fill out some sort of form would enable our department to quantify staffing
requirements and provide more accurate insight into when resources will become
available. Do any of you have suggestions/templates to share? TIA___

Frame to pdf, Bookmark control

2012-04-06 Thread Theresa de Valence

Frame 8, Acrobat Pro X

Dear Framers,

I have a book of >100 short fiction stories (i.e. 25 words long). Each
story starts at the top of a new frame on the master page (4 to a page).
From the top, there is:

-Author (Heading3)
-Author weblink (Link)
-Title (Heading2)
-Story (Body)

When I save this document to pdf, bookmarks are created using Paragraph
tags (Heading3, Heading2).

The difficulty is that when the pdf View>Page Display is set to Enable
Scrolling--when one clicks on the pdf bookmarks for Title, the display
puts the Title at the top of view which means that the author has
disappeared and it seems as though the author of the following story
belongs to the current story. Let me clarify this.

THE PAGE AS VIEWED BY AUTHOR:
-Author BOOKMARK
-Author weblink
-Title
-Story

-Author Bookmark
-Author weblink
-Title
-Story

-
THE PAGE AS VIEWED BY TITLE:
-Title BOOKMARK
-Story

-Author
-Author weblink
. . . this looks like the end of the story
-Title BOOKMARK
-Story

I moved all the Marker tags from the Title (Heading2) location and put
them in the Author name but this makes no difference to the regenerated
file.

How do I bookmark Heading2 (Title) so that clicking on the bookmark
begins the display from the top of the frame (i.e. Author)?

Thanks,
Theresa

FM 8, Inter-document references, and the iPad

2012-04-06 Thread David Artman
Related to my Manual > Task Sheet > Checklist project (you though the
single-sourcing challenge was tricky!):

I have the Checklist linking to various external publications that it
calls (in the previous email, I simplified it to one doc, but it's
really linking out to about ten different docs).

On Windows 7, FM8, in Acrobat X — I build all the books in the same
folder, and the links work just like they have for 15 years for me:
Click a "(How?" xref to go to the actual manual with full information;
click a "(Back)" xref to return (I am using manual back links for
testing, not having Fred's plug-in).

On Windows XP, FM8, in Acrobat 7 — The links produce an error about
"file referencing" (it's on another person's machine, and I can't ask
ATM). Not too surprising: I'm on a 64-bit system. Somewhat surprising:
we both tried it from the SAME files on the SAME network share.

When imported into PDF Expert on iPad: The links ONLY go to the top of
the PDF document, NOT to the actual Task or Step at which their markers
are set.

Ultimately, these deliverables will be in PDF on iPads, being filled out
as forms, saved, and attached to cases in a CRM.

SO: has anyone got any thoughts about cross-linking documents at the
heading level in PDFs for delivery to the iPad?

David

RE: Manual > Task Sheet > Checklist

2012-04-06 Thread David Artman
One reply, off-list, suggested a cross-referencing plug-in. That *might*
work for linking back automatically, but it doesn't address building the
TASK and CHKL out of the "comprehensive" IMPL (main book).

I'm leaning towards LOP, this week. Each Task and Step would link back
to the manual automatically, of course.

Thanks!

Re: XML Cookbook

2012-04-06 Thread Robert Lauriston
I got nowhere when I was trying to understand how to create an FM10
project using XML source. Everything I found either seemed to be out
of date or was aimed at experienced users.

RE: Numbering problems in a book

Possibly obvious questions:
1) Does the "Figure n+" ParaStyle use autonumbering of the form "Figure
"?

2) Does the cross-reference format Definition field read something like
"Figure " or ""?

If Yes and Yes... I'd have to see a sample file using the styles. You
should be able to make one very quickly, with just two lines of text
(Figure Para, and a Body or whatever with the xref).

I suspect there's a typo in the Autonumber Format field on the ParaStyle
or in the Definition field of the xref format.

documentation request form?

2012-04-06 Thread hessiansx4
I've been tasked with?researching practices related to documentation requests.
Currently, we have no formal process and I suggested that requiring requestors
to fill out some sort of form would enable our department to quantify staffing
requirements and provide more accurate insight into when resources will become
available. Do any of you have suggestions/templates to share? TIA
